Too dangerous to visit?[edit]

I saw this facinating articles on BBC News: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27734930

Is this the same place? The article suggests it is forbidden to go there... it is possible there are more than one whaling station? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 13:11, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Shackleton's ghost? The Thing? A nuke? ϒpsilon (talk) 13:57, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There are several whaling stations on South Georgia, most of which are off limits. Grytviken is an exception - much of that whaling station is off limits, but you can still wander around, visit the cemetery, climb the surrounding hills, and the church former manager's house is now a museum on the island's history. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:42, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A full list of the 7 (!) whaling stations on the island is at w:South Georgia#South Georgia. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:36, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The places look a lot like northern Norway; whaling and fishing, climate, sparsely populated, rugged mountains, Germans and British navies during WW2, the architecture and of course the Norwegian names of many of the whaling stations. But there are penguins instead of puffins. ϒpsilon (talk) 18:55, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
7 whaling stations?? Poor whales! Thanks for the replies everyone! --Andrewssi2 (talk) 00:54, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
