Parallels

I'm really glad this article has been started. I don't like this as the first sentence of "Understand", though:

"The Islamic Golden Age was parallel with the European Middle Ages, with entities such as the Frankish Empire, Byzantine Empire and Medieval and Renaissance Italy."

That isn't about the Golden Age, and it's much more the Europeans who learned from the Muslims at the time than vice versa. As a topic sentence, it comes off very Euro- and Christian-centric to me. I will edit. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:55, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

I made some changes. See what you think of them. I'm wondering how much we want to cover the w:Almohad Caliphate as a contrast to the more tolerant ones. One can make an argument that the Golden Age ended around the time of the Mongol conquest in Baghdad but earlier in areas under Almohad rule. Also, Neil deGrasse Tyson and some other people consider w:Al-Ghazali responsible for ending the Golden Age. You can read some back and forth in comments here in addition to the Wikipedia article. Historical travel topics needs to be categorized by time and place, still as inclusive as possible. My intention was to make a broad article including all Muslim/Islamic territories from the time of Muhammad to the rise of the Ottoman Empire, as well as their proximity in time and place. The name Islamic Golden Age carries some connotations of intellectual prosperity, which was often but not always the case. This article could possibly be called Islamic expansion, Islamic caliphates and Medieval Islamic world; these names however have their subjective connotations as well. /Yvwv (talk) 22:24, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
