Mentioning the name of a restaurant in the image caption
[edit]Ibaman, I am kind of new to wikivoyage and I'm wondering why mentioning the name of a restaurant in the image caption is viewed as touting. I've read the page and I don't see anything mentioned there that would prohibit this. Or should something first be listed (such as Sweet Mae Salong) before it can be mentioned in an image caption? - I should have written "copyedit per Image policy#Photos of businesses and Don't tout". The inclusion of a restaurant's name in such a picture seems to me promotional enough to be at odds with this policy. That's why I edited it out. Ibaman (talk) 12:53, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- Ibaman, where does legitimately listing a company end and where does touting start? I still can't find a reason in either cited policy page for removing the name of this 1 of only 2 restaurants in Mae Salong that actually serves this (quite special because of the need for fresh tea leaves) dish. And I really tried by intently reading both policy pages. Perhaps the policy pages should be rewritten somewhat to conform with your idea of when something should or shouldn't be included? - Takeaway (talk) 15:20, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
- To include a listing to the restaurant is OK (There isn't any, so far). To include a picture of its entrance, or its interior, or its specialties, is not. There's a lot of precedent in this; I've been copyediting and removing such subtle advertisements for at least ten years here in Wikivoyage. I hope some other admin will join the discussion and confirm this. Ibaman (talk) 16:03, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
- No need to reinvent the wheel. It's right at Image policy#Photos of businesses, which you linked above:
- As a general rule, photos of individual businesses, especially those seen to be promotional, will be removed. Exceptions include images that are meant to be illustrative of the type of business establishment in a certain region, or those of exceptionally famous establishments. See also Wikivoyage:Don't tout. - Ibaman/Ikan Kekek. I didn't intend it to be promotional. Instead I thought it to be informative, similar to listing a venue. I intend to contribute more to Wikivoyage (some of the photos I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons are already used on Wikivoyage) and still figuring out when something can, and when something can't be mentioned. I still find the policy pages somewhat vague in their description. Oh well, something new to figure out. - Takeaway (talk) 16:17, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
