Merge

[edit]

@Traveler100: I see you want to merge this into Shetland Islands. I see how that makes sense, as there's really not much content there and support this. However I am curious, how are you going to structure this? Because you have on one hand a couple articles for towns on the mainland and then on the other hand articles which cover each of the other islands as a whole, how can we make that this distinction is clear to a traveller who knows nothing about the place? I am thinking making a Mainland section with the towns on mainland and then an 'Other Islands' section with the articles for the islands would be a possibility, but how were you intending to do this? The same applies of course also to the suggested merge on Orkney. Drat70 (talk) 09:19, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I was thinking of moving the text in the Towns and Villages section into the text of each island in the Island section, with Mainland having sub-bullet points for the settlement articles. --Traveler100 (talk) 12:59, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I guess that would work. Drat70 (talk) 13:44, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Probably not a good idea to merge this (and simalarly for Orkney). This is the biggest island of the group. The page may be empty at the moment, probably because unlike smaller islands the listings are in the towns. I don't think that we should try to let the amount of content we have drive the structure. I just think that Shetland Islands serves as the page for Mainland as well the other islands. Cannot see the number of settlement city articles increase by more that a few (just created one). Any text added to Mainland will just be repeating what is on the Islands article or be splitting the information that is inconvenient for the reader. Better one good region article that two mediocre. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:38, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I support this. Having been on Shetland, I can confirm that there is probably little enough to do on the mainland, that all the information can go into the city articles without overloading them. Furthermore thinking about it, it makes sense that the main article doubles as the article for mainland as virtually all travelers to Shetland will go through the mainland as that's where the airport and the ferry landing is. But most of Mainland doesn't really fit into cities. But there are plenty of places of interest to tourists around the island. Is it actually helpful to have a separate article for Brae? It would be more useful to group it into broad areas, ie north/south/west mainland. --Fuaran buidhe (talk) 13:04, 24 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

In rural locations attractions and amenities are listed in the closest settlement article. If there is no village near to a POI then it could be listed in the Shetland Islands article (as things are at the moment). --Traveler100 (talk) 12:48, 12 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
