Meran or Merano?[edit]

Which spelling is used more? I think Meran, but either way, we need to mention both spellings at the beginning of the article, but after that, use one spelling exclusively, and right now, there is no consistency whatsoever. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:08, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sudtirol/Alto Adige has got two official languages: Italian and German. Italian speaking people calls the city Merano, German speaking people Meran. The more used? It depends ... In Italy you will never (or rarely) hear Meran. By the way the name are similar, so there will be no problem regarding misunderstanding, but I think we should take a decision for whole Alto Adige/SudTirol. In other cases (like Sterzing and Vipiteno) the names are quite different. --Lkcl it (Talk) 08:44, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So maybe we should use Merano. What do you think? Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:52, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think that Merano is better than Meran, a redirect from Meran to Merano and an explanation in the the first lines are enought. Regarding the other cities in South Tyrol Bolzano is in Italian, but Bruneck, Brixen and Klausen are in German. --Lkcl it (Talk) 09:59, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's fine to keep the names of towns in Sudtirol/Alto Adige that have big German-speaking majorities in German with the Italian name noted at the top of the article. I'll change this article's name to Merano with a redirect and substitute all the mentioned of Meran for Merano, except in the beginning of the article, unless there's an objection within 24 hours or so. Any objection to changing this article to Merano? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:32, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:19, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've also added redirects from Brunico to Bruneck and from Chiusa to Klausen (South Tyrol) (Bressano was already a redirect to Brixen). Any other towns in Alto Adige/SudTirol with alternate names that lack redirects should have them. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:57, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
