Why should anyone visit Roden?

[edit]

I've done my research on Roden today and I've found little that would interest a traveller. The lifestock market held in the village is dying out due to decrease in lifestock trade, and aside from some Rijksmonumenten, the church and Landgoed Mensinge I see little that would even make someone consider visiting the village. Is this page really necessary?

Well, the place does meet our article-criteria (there are several places to sleep and eat, and there are a few attractions, even if they aren't the most exciting to you or me), so there's not really a reason to delete it. It is, however, a small village indeed. I can imagine that it's hard to flesh out this article. I'm not very familiar with the region, but would it make more sense to create an article for the municipality, which encompasses a range of hamlets and villages? Such an article could hold information for Roden, Peize, Norg and Veenhuizen, which should allow for a more substantial article. The Roden article would become a redirect. I personally don't think that a museum and a restaurant is "meeting article-criteria". There are no places to sleep for as far as I know. We're talking about Drenthe here, the least populated province of the Netherlands. The area has a decline in population, so villages will only get smaller and more and more businesses will close over time. The municipality to which Roden belongs is still lacking attractions in my opinion. Perhaps dividing Drenthe in multiple regions (for example: Assen, Emmen, North Drenthe and South Drenthe), just because the cities of Assen and Emmen have the most interesting sites and the municipalities of Drenthe don't offer much. I'm totally in favour of merging this with one of those articles. No good information should just get deleted.

We have to be careful not to "judge" attractions or locations based on personal preferences. While we shouldn't make articles we can't fill, for small villages without attractions, I'm not sure you would do Drenthe justice by suggesting it should fit in 4 articles. As a kid, I've actually spent at least 3 summer holidays in Drenthe, and -except for the Emmen zoo- I don't think we ever went to Assen or Emmen :) Official numbers state that about 1,5 million holidays were spent in the province in 2014 by Dutch people alone, who booked over 7.8 million nights in that year. I'm not looking at the article as it is, but at a quick Google search. There seem to be at least a couple of hotels in Roden itself, and of course the range of b&b's and camp sites you would expect. The municipality holds several museums, has a bunch of cultural activities and a lot of information for hikers and bicycle tours. In short, you may not wish to fill these destination articles, but there's plenty of material to create them if someone else does and plenty of visitors who might make use of them. It wasn't my intent to judge, I just didn't find any places to sleep in Roden the first time I searched for it, but I may put some more effort into finding hotels in the area in roughly two weeks. It would be appreciated if we have any directions for deviding Drenthe's regions. I'm very much willing to help out in dividing these regions and adding content to them, but I can't do so for the next 10-14 days. Perhaps sweeping this subject into Talk:Drenthe as Sub-dividing Drenthe -- or anything along those lines -- would be a good start?

Feel free to start a discussion if you like, but I see no use at all in diving Drenthe in subregions, and will not support such a proposal. We typically subdivide regions or provinces when the main articles are ( or would be) overcrowded with information. In the case of Drenthe, half of the listed destinations are red links and the Drenthe article itself is still an outline. Creating an extra region-layer is not in the interest of travellers at all. If you're interested in working on this region, why not simply work on the existing articles? JuliasTravels (talk) 10:02, 2 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I guess that I'm ahead of business then. I'll work on the existing articles and see where that gets us. I'll start a discussion on Drenthe's Talk page once there's enough progress on the existing pages.

Change name to Noordenveld?

[edit]

Hi, I think it would be good to change the name of this page to Noordenveld (i.e. the name of the municipality). In that way, the wider region can be covered, including the relatively touristic villages of Norg and Veenhuizen. I think it makes no sense to start specific articles for all of those villages, but together it is worth an article. --ErwinFCG (talk) 09:38, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

I agree and went ahead; I moved the page. JuliasTravels (talk) 10:06, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
