Warning box

[edit]

Hi Christian Traveler, where are you getting your information about violence in Northern Haiti? I was under the impression that it was an area of relative peace, although I certainly could be wrong. Thanks, Brycehughes (talk) 09:12, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia has a map showing the extent of the gang activity and it covers most of N Haiti. Christian Traveler (talk) 12:54, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Are you talking about this map? Brycehughes (talk) 13:46, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yep Christian Traveler (talk) 18:53, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that map alone warrants a warning box. The data underlying the map is from ACLED, and the map's creator helpfully listed the filters in the image description. Using the ACLED dashboard, I created this map using the exact same filters, with the exception that I removed the region filter (i.e. we're not limiting it to just Haiti). You can see that with that data, over the same time period, both Puerto Rico and Jamaica look even more violent than Haiti, not to mention Northern Haiti. So, I think we need better evidence than just that Wikimedia map to add a warning box. As far as I understand it, Northern Haiti and Cap-Haitien are far calmer than, say, Port-au-Prince – I would hate to dissuade anyone from fleeing there from Port-au-Prince. I've also looked in the the various linked travel advisories listed on the Haiti page, but I don't see any mention Northern Haiti or Cap-Haitien in there. Plus, unless there is something of significant notable regional interest to warrant being mentioned on this article, shouldn't all the important stuff go on Haiti? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 07:11, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I think so. I'll remove the box for now. Christian Traveler feel free to continue the discussion though. Brycehughes (talk) 12:14, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
