Talk:Nyanja phrasebook
Add topicThe pronunciation guide could use some work from somebody who knows their stuff, and the phrase list should then be referenced against it. Here's the best reference I found online, but it's pretty limited. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:51, 31 Aug 2005 (EDT)
Hey, I'm trying to add to this but I can't quite figure out the format, specifically in the latter sections. Are the spaces with elipses in them the places to insert the Nyanja terms, or are Nyanja phrases supposed to replace the unbolded English? Also, isnt "good morning" "mwaka bwanji", as opposed to "mwadzuka bwanji"? In addition, I'm not quite sure if "good afternoon" is different, but "good evening" is definitely "mwachoma bwanji". Then again, these may just be regional variations. I'm working off what's spoken in central Zambia, as opposed to Malawi or anywhere else. (WT-en) TheKaplan 17:41, 4 March 2006 (EST)
- Hi, I will try and help, but I have not done work on the phrasebooks. See Project:Phrasebook Expedition and the Phrasebook template for information and format. You can also see some examples at Project:List of phrasebooks. I believe the answer is the Nyanja phrases do replace the unbolded English as you said. Thank you for your help and good luck with your edits. I will also put some links on your talk page User talk:(WT-en) TheKaplan that will help you. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 18:38, 4 March 2006 (EST)
- Xltel is correct. So the plain text should contain the Nyanja script, and the italics in parentheses should have pseudophonetics. (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:00, 4 March 2006 (EST)

[edit]Chewa, Chichewa, or Nyanja
[edit]I've only heard this language called "Chichewa" or sometimes "Chewa". As I opened this page, I was wondering what Nyanja was and where it was spoken, then I read the lead paragraph and thought, "Oh, it's just Chichewa." A bit of hunting on Wikipedia suggests that the majority of speakers live in Malawi where (according to the article) it's called Chichewa, as opposed to Mozambique and Zambia, where it's called Chinyanja. I admit I'm far from an expert, but given all this, should we move the page to Chichewa phrasebook? —Granger (talk · contribs) 01:28, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
