Too many images?[edit]

Wikivoyage has a policy of avoiding excessive images. Right now, not only is there an unbroken stream of images at the right margin - previously deemed a no-no on Wikivoyage in discussions (see Wikivoyage talk:Image policy#Minimal use of images - not appropriate - but at least on my laptop, the images go past the end of the article fully in one case and partly in a second case, which extends just below the last visible codes. This really needs to be remedied, and maybe some restraint should be taken in just how enthusiastically we are inserting images. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:33, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One image is removed so it should not go past the end of the article on your laptop anymore. On a big screen it did not even before.

In my experience, especially young people barely read longer text, but are guided by pictures. Articles without pictures or with few are hardly noticed. Generation Facebook etc. I think the design with images should be left to the discretion of the author of the article itself, as long as the guidelines are not violated, or? DocWoKav

This is a Wiki, not a singly-authored site (such as for different bloggers or something). And it has a style. There are still way too many images for Wikivoyage style. I'd suggest removing about 50% of the thumbnails. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:01, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Ikan on this issue. Accessibility for people with low bandwidth is important, and this article should not stand out as being different from all of the others in the project. If you disagree with the policy of avoiding excessive images, you can propose changes on its talk page. Ground Zero (talk) 00:21, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, than just remove what you think is not helpful for a reader. But before have a look at the Philippi Wikipedia article in comparison (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippi) DocWoKav
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with different style and goals from Wikivoyage. It would be helpful if you could decide which images are least important. It's not a question of "not helpful"; just least important. Wikivoyage, Commons and Wikipedia all have different functions, and readers are encouraged to use the sister site links to see more images or read more encyclopedic content. The restaurant at the entrance looks like the least interesting picture and not one to lead with. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:43, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I actually think too many images may have been removed now. :-) How does this look? We could probably move things around a bit, but it doesn't seem out of line to me. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:59, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
..I should have listend to user GroundZero in the Kavala discussion not to create this page! Too many discussions about unimportant formalities. But i learned my lesson! —The preceding comment was added by DocWoKav (talkcontribs)
Don't be like that. The page is useful! Discussions of style are not the be-all and end-all, but they're good, too. One thing about photos is that it's good to distribute them somewhat evenly within the article, not bunch them up like I sometimes see in some articles. @DocWoKav:, as I said here, you managed to change my mind about a Philippi article. I think this a great addition to Wikivoyage. Thank you for taking this on. And I think it looks much better now. Ground Zero (talk) 10:31, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
