Images

We now have eight images in row in the upper part of the article (with my quite narrow browser window), with enough images also further down. I think that's excessive even in an article like this, and certainly violates our manual of style. Which ones should be kept?

We could create a gallery on Commons, for those that want to view a larger curated selection of images.

Yeah. Also, the bottom 2 images, ending with the map, are below the article on my browser. The images that seem to me to show the least at thumbnail size are the Parthenon marbles, the memorial to Simon Bolivar and Storm King, so I'd suggest deleting those images. At some point, it would also be a good idea to sub in one or two images of sculptures from the most populous continent (Asia, of course - possibilities include but certainly aren't limited to sculptures from China, Japan, India or Indonesia). The suggested ones are landscape-oriented. I added the "upright" parameter to all images, which is unfair to those. You might want to check an old version of the page for whether they better come to their right if as large as the other ones. I think Parthenon and Bolivar need to be quite a bit larger to show, thus I agree with IK on those.

The Storm King Wavefield is very different from the other sculptures and isn't close to other images – in a wide window it is forced down by them, but removing some of the similar ones above would solve the problem – so I think it is a strong candidate to be kept.

David and Venus are iconic, but I think that's rather a reason not to necessarily include them, at least considering a European readership. Better to give space to some surprising ones. I think one image is enough in the lead of Understand + the "iconic" section (we could have a longer lead, allowing an additional landscape-oriented image there). Nefertiti suits as an example of a bust, David could go into Renaissance (if there's space at our target window width), the Moai heads are mentioned as puzzling ancient sculptures and the Olmec head suites Museums, replacing the marbles. Symphonic Sculpture and the Storm could be left in the Sculpture gardens section.

For that selection, in my browser window, there is then some space between the images, and one or two could be squeezed in. However, I think having the images illustrate relevant sections is more important than having a few more of them. Maximising my window makes the map extend a bit below the text, but many readers use Vector-2022, which keeps the view column reasonably narrow and gives image placement close to what I see in my browser window. If we want more image, we could make an exception because of the theme of the article and have an inline gallery. We could also make an explicit link in See also to a gallery at Commons.
