Article name

[edit]

In my opinion the name "Strängnäs and Mariefred" is a bit too cumbersome. I suggest that we change the article title to "Strängnäs", the largest city and administrative center of the municipality, and make Mariefred a redirect. MartinJacobson (talk) 08:02, 17 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

I dont know these places very well, but I once made this solution Åndalsnes and Romsdal valley because it does not make sense (or is not practical) to keep these apart. But for Hellesylt I made a redirect to Geiranger, because these are clearly two separate places although from the visitor's point of view it is the same. --Erik den yngre (talk) 17:15, 18 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes these cases seem similar to me. My main issue is not whether Strängnäs and Mariefred should be treated in one or two articles. (While Mariefred is small it has several interesting historical sights, which might merit it an article of its own). Rather, it is that if we are to treat both places in one article, "Strängnäs" is a better name than "Strängnäs and Mariefred". MartinJacobson (talk) 20:26, 19 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
In the case of Geiranger and Hellesylt it would be more fair to name the article "Geiranger and Hellesylt" as these are indeed two villages separated by the famous fjord (the best name would in fact be "Geirangerfjord" as that is what people visit, not the insignificant villages at either end). Hellesylt is in fact the bigger place and Geiranger was historically part of Hellesylt district. But Geiranger is the big name. Wikivoyage:Naming conventions does not solve this issue as far as I can see. --Erik den yngre (talk) 18:57, 20 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
If visitors go to "Geirangerfjord", and if that name is more accurate for the area covered in the article, I definitely think that the article should be called "Geirangerfjord"! I used a similar solution for Fryksdalen, which cover the villages/municipalities Torsby, Sunne and Kil. MartinJacobson (talk) 21:26, 20 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, who cares about the tiny village with a couple hotels and a souvenir shop? Visitors come for the fjord. Officially it is called "Destinasjon Geirangerfjord". Still many (most?) visitors talk about "Geiranger". (Many locals would know that "Geiranger" is in fact the fjord itself, but the name has been transferred to the village, then confusingly transferred back to the fjord, but that is a different discussion.)
