Merge[edit]

In Feb 2020, discussion is under way on merging pages for some of the small towns around Manchester. See Manchester / Talk if you can contribute to this.

For Ashton, the proposal is to include Hyde here - views? It's just a burb, infamous for Harold Shipman, who merits an info box.

Ashton itself is thin on content, and my initial thought was that it too should merge somewhere. But it's on the edge of Pennine moorland stretching up to the Yorks / Derby border, so if the scope of the page expands, we might make it usable. Grahamsands (talk) 15:01, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As you say, there's hardly any more content here, and it's not clear to me that as a place Ashton is any more prominent than Hyde, so I do support a merge, but into a combined Ashton-under-Lyne and Hyde article, or possibly into a Tameside article along with attractions in Denton, Droylesden, Longdendale, etc.
By the by, Hyde has another obscure claim to fame: being the place where everyone in Manchester CID thought Sam Tyler was from, when he was actually from the future.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 19:07, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Right, Ashton's looking healthier now. Ashton-under-Lyne is the name you see on road signs and on the map so I'd prefer to keep it. But the intro explains Tameside and the map is so labelled to take in all the outlying places. Everything relevant from Hyde is migrated, we don't need the mediocre shopping centre. I intend to redirect Hyde on Mon 9 March unless there's objections. Grahamsands (talk) 21:01, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You see Hyde and Tameside on signs too, but the point is that the article covers more than Ashton, and that's why the name isn't accurate anymore, thanks to your hard work.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 21:15, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hokay, so long as both names link here; the intro has been tweaked accordingly. Tameside is currently pointing at Greater Manchester, I don't know how to redirect a redirect. Grahamsands (talk) 21:03, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fortunately, I do. :) --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 07:04, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
