Discussion[edit]

This template really needs to be documented. I'm puzzled, for example, about whether Berkeley (California) is in both Alameda County and East Bay (Bay Area) or if there Can Be Only One thing it is in. If the latter, then how do we propose selecting the enclosing region when there is ambiguity. -- (WT-en) Colin 01:34, 18 Nov 2005 (EST)

Good point! I think the main thing I want to do with this data is create bread-crumb style navigation. That is, on the Raleigh page, across the top you'd have links like "North America > United States of America > South > North Carolina > Research Triangle > Raleigh". If this is done, then the most helpful and least redundant information is specifying the immediately-next-largest containing area (here, Research Triangle); the rest can be deduced at runtime.
That said, there's probably some value in having destinations that overlap or split between multiple parents; Lake Tahoe and the Alps are two that come to mind. I'd think it'd be OK to define two parent destinations, and have two breadcrumb paths, like this:
North America > United States of America > California > Lake Tahoe
North America > United States of America > Nevada > Lake Tahoe
I think multiple paths should be the exception, not the rule; and more than, say, 2-3 should be cause for concern. Also, any branches higher than the next highest should be ignored lest we fall into an exponentiation problem. To continue the example, Truckee is in the Lake Tahoe region but it's not in Nevada. So in forming Truckee's bread-crumb path, the code would either choose the first path available (which might be wrong), or we could have some advisory information that Truckee was in fact in California and not Nevada.
I'm not sure what to say about other controversies. We have had some sticky hierarchy problems in the past; sections of Europe come to mind immediately. I think a spirit of compromise is probably the best bet here.
And, yes: there is need for more documentation. I figured I'd add it when the bread-crumb nav code is done and I could put it on the instructions page for that feature. --(WT-en) Evan 02:47, 18 Nov 2005 (EST)

So we agree that we are making a directed acyclic graph? How about other articles? Eg. phrasebooks, do we use isin or a special spokenin template? I want to use this for the offline-projects. How do I get a sub-graph out? E.g. if I want all destinations in Italy. I could make a script that searches for { {isin} }, build the tree, select the Italy destinatations, and fetches them with wix. But that is not very elegant or efficient. --(WT-en) elgaard 12:07, 21 Nov 2005 (EST)

Hi, elgaard. I have started a RDF Expedition about topics like that. There is not yet an answer for your questions, but I'd appreciate any comments in the expedition pages. Maybe, you'd like to join. -- (WT-en) Hansm 12:19, 21 Nov 2005 (EST)

Is there a why we need to specify underscores instead of spaces? - for example { {IsIn|Hong Kong} } doesn't work, I need { {IsIn Hong_Kong} } making this different to the standard wikilinks - bit of a pain, but I don't know enough about how this is implemented to understand why it behaves so. Apart from that I really like the functionality. (WT-en) Hkpatv 02:28, 10 Dec 2005 (EST)

A limitation apparently. See this. --(WT-en) Ravikiran 09:48, 10 Dec 2005 (EST)

Hi. Wonder if I can get some help. My first attempt at using isIn has not been very successful, as you can see on the Port Klang page. Why does it not display Asia : South East Asia : Malaysia etc but only Selangor, the next biggest area? If you can fix it, could you explain how it was corrected so that I would know what to do in the future. Thanks.(WT-en) Slleong 23:39, 9 Feb 2006 (EST)

I think the RDF caching is broken again. Oh Eeeeeeee-van... (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:41, 9 Feb 2006 (EST)
Actually it looks like something's broken even more badly: I did an action=purge on Port Klang and the breadcrumb trail disappeared entirely. (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:46, 9 Feb 2006 (EST)
It looks like the isIn for Selangor was angry. Updating that and then purging Port Klang seems to have solved the problem. -- (WT-en) Ryan 00:01, 10 Feb 2006 (EST)
Hoorah! It worked ... well, at least partially. It now has Malaysia>Peninsular Malaysia>Central>Selangor>Port Klang. Asia>Southeast Asia is still missing. isIn for Malaysia page angry too? Tried to figure out but can't. SOS again. Thanks for helping me out.(WT-en) Slleong 09:36, 10 Feb 2006 (EST)

I spoke to it nicely, and it isn't angry any more, and Port Klang,s Asian lineage is now complete. (WT-en) WindHorse 10 Feb 06

Thanks a million. Can you explain what was wrong? So that I don't need to bother anyone next time when I face such problems. Must say I was tremendously surprised at the speed my pleas were answered! Thanks again.(WT-en) Slleong 00:57, 11 Feb 2006 (EST)
I just clicked 'edit' then 'save, and hey presto, there is was - the complete lineage. I don't know why, but that method often activates a lazy trail. (WT-en) WindHorse 11 Feb 06

Bellows Falls/Rockingham[edit]

At the moment the breadcrumb navigation on Bellows Falls/Rockingham isn't working. -- (WT-en) Ryan 16:26, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)

This old report no longer applies. It wasn't working because there was no Rockingham article I think. At any rate, it should have been Rockingham/Bellows Falls as Bellows Falls is in Rockingham. Rockingham is now disambiguated and the article is Rockingham (Vermont)/Bellows Falls. (WT-en) OldPine 19:58, 1 October 2006 (EDT)

Templates do not work if a site name starts with a non-ASCII character[edit]

It is impossible to create a breadcrumbs navigation if a site name starts with a percent sign, for instance in case of German umlauts or other non-ASCII characters.

For instance:

  • The isIn (in German IstIn) template is not working at the site of Ägypten (German for Egypt) or Österreich (German for Austria); the template should be {{IstIn|Nordafrika}} (German for North Africa). But the same tamplate works in case of another North African countries. There would be no problems if the % character is within the site name.
  • The isIn (in German IstIn) template is also not working at any site within "Ägypten", also in cases, where the site names do not contain umlauts.

Any Progress Solving Problems?[edit]

The stub IsIn is not working in some cases (for instance ja:). Is there any progress to solve this problem? (WT-en) Unger 09:19, 5 Feb 2006 (EST)

Polish wikivoyage waiting for solve this problem too. (WT-en) Adam Dziura 03:00, 5 April 2006 (EDT)

Downloading/sharing the template[edit]

This template is great, and has very simple applications that using categories just cant cover.

Is there any way we can get our hands on the code for this template to use in other mediawiki installations?

Or can you even just give us a run down on how to create a similar breadcrumbs navigation tree ourselves? Thanks.

Underscore[edit]

Sure would be nice if someone wrote a little description. In fact it seems as if isin should be on the default templates.

Also noticed that multi-word names must be separated by underscore: {{IsIn|Imperial_Valley}}--(WT-en) justfred 13:48, 6 October 2006 (EDT)

Yes. I've added some documentation to the template; let me know if that helps. --(WT-en) Evan 14:03, 6 October 2006 (EDT)
Cool. Any reason not to just redirect template:isin to breadcrumb, or vice-versa?--(WT-en) justfred 14:12, 6 October 2006 (EDT)

IsIn for other language editions[edit]

How do I get this working for the Spanish language version? Copying the code in the template is not enough, apparently. (WT-en) Texugo 02:57, 18 August 2006 (EDT)

Problem with a North Africa/Saharan Africa country[edit]

Western Sahara In the regions of Africa article, Western Sahara is clearly marked by the map as being "North African." I changed the North Africa and Saharan Africa articles to match this. Unfortunately, the {{IsIn|Western_Sahara}} creates breadcrumbs back to Saharan Africa. I don't know how this can be fixed; can someone assist me? -(WT-en) Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 18:59, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

Huh!? Let me try to put this in different words. You edited the North Africa and Saharan Africa guides to show that Western Sahara is in North Africa, right?
I can't figure out where you came up with {{IsIn|Western_Sahara}}. That template would not be used in any of the articles you mentioned, however, there was a {{IsIn|Saharan_Africa}} template in the Western Sahara, but to show the breadcrumb to North Africa from Western Sahara you would have needed to change the IsIn from {{IsIn|Saharan_Africa}} to {{IsPartOf|North_Africa}}. -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 19:27, 30 April 2007 (EDT)
Ah Thanks. You are right, {{IsIn|Western_Sahara}} is not in any of the articles that I mentioned, but it is in several other articles that I have edited. -(WT-en) Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 19:49, 30 April 2007 (EDT)
Cool, OK. I figured it was a simple mistake, but it was confusing me. All pages that are a part of hierarchy including Western Sahara (translation: Anything with {{IsIn|Western_Sahara}} or {{IsPartOf|Western Sahara}}) should now link back to North Africa in the breadcrumb. If not, they will when the cache updates itself. -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 19:59, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

isIn[edit]

Where should I report a broken instance of {{isIn}}? ({{isIn|Lower Saxony}} on Oldenburg page is not displaying at all.) --(WT-en) Rogerhc 19:31, 2 June 2007 (EDT)

Fixed the crumb. (WT-en) Wrh2 replaced isIn with isPartOf but still no crumb. So I, per Wikivoyage_talk:Breadcrumb_navigation#Truncation_of_Breadcrumbs, purged the parent crumb pages Germany, then Lower Saxony, then the page itself Oldenburg and then reloaded the page. Crumbs show now. YEA! :-) (WT-en) Rogerhc 20:39, 2 June 2007 (EDT)

Deprecated use[edit]

Are we trying to phase this out completely now? I still tend to use it myself when typing it manually—since it's shorter. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 21:21, 19 February 2009 (EST)

Sorry, I apparently mis-remembered this conversation. There was some agreement to use isPartOf instead of isIn because it properly escapes all characters, but some later contributors to the conversation raised the concern that they liked the shorter name, so no final resolution was ever reached. I'd prefer to see a single template used but am a bit leerie of trying to get isIn to work even with pages that used escaped parentheses. For now I guess we're stuck with the two template solution... -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:13, 19 February 2009 (EST)
Can't we just redirect IsIn to IsPartOf? Or move the latter to the former? (WT-en) LtPowers 11:35, 23 May 2009 (EDT)
