Editing issues
[edit](replying to Talk:Kumamoto)
While I don't think it's a problem for Wikivoyage to be used as a teaching/writing tool for school projects (it's been done in the past), I don't think that calls for leniency in editing on the part of "regular" contributors for the sake of beginners can be reasonably accommodated.
In fact, I would say the most important thing that starting Wiki contributors should know is that material will be quickly, mercilessly, and sometimes drastically, edited. Collaboration on a Wiki is not fifteen people sitting at a desk discussing a few pages for a few hours, it's hundreds of people actively editing hundreds of pages twenty-four hours a day. Things get changed first, then discussed if there's an issue. And Wikivoyage is a real, working travel guide, so stuff that doesn't meet certain standards needs to be fixed. We can't treat misguided but well-intentioned material much differently from vandalism or spamming.
This is something that every contributor needs to learn, and most will do so very quickly. If the students learn that, and I hope they will, then they'll do fine and contribute good, well-written material.

- Just to add a somewhat milder viewpoint, the issue here isn't the content, it's how that content is being organized. I think you have a couple of options:
- Add the new content as attractions under the proper city/town article.
- Create the new pages under your user page, and then copy them to the proper locations later on. For example User:(WT-en) Joseph tomei/project1.
- Obviously option #1 would be preferred as it allows other users to edit and modify content that is being added. Also, apologies if you took offense at (WT-en) Jpatokal's terror squad comment, I believe it was meant in jest. Thank you very much for the contributions you are making with your class, and please bear with us as we try to figure out how best to help you meet your goals within the context of a wiki and while also meeting our own goals. -- (WT-en) Ryan 11:21, 11 Nov 2005 (EST)
- I'm very interested in how we can be welcoming for students and educators and still keep our regular working process. I wonder if we should start a Education Expedition ? --(WT-en) Evan 16:58, 11 Nov 2005 (EST)
- Me too. I added my comments to Talk:Kumamoto, please take a look there too. (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:20, 12 Nov 2005 (EST)
Education Expedition
[edit]I redirected the page you started to a expedition page called Project:Education Expedition. We use "expeditions" for organizing special projects. Your experience and guidance would be much appreciated! --(WT-en) Evan 09:46, 14 Nov 2005 (EST)
Thanks. Still getting used to the speed of things around here. I've added a section for ESL learners/teachers. Please let me know if you think there are any problems (WT-en) Joseph tomei 08:29, 15 Nov 2005 (EST)
- I think the section you added was excellent. Thanks for your contributions! -- (WT-en) Ilkirk 10:19, 15 Nov 2005 (EST)
Project 1
[edit]So that it is convenient to keep track of things, the following is a list of articles created for your (WT-en) Project 1 and users who have touched these pages. I have noted the first 3 articles and welcomed two registered users. Other users might like to add other pages as and when they are created or welcome new users if they register and edit these pages. -- (WT-en) Huttite 07:16, 18 Nov 2005 (EST)
