Hello Lex! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub.

Copying TravelNT stuff[edit]

Thanks for your note. With regard to copying the travelnt stuff, if you own the copyright then you can relicence it under the CC-BY-SA licence that Wikivoyage requires. This is going to be especially important because the travelnt site asserts copyright in the material on the webpage, and you are effectively claiming that text is freely available (under cc-by-sa).

Best to make a note on your user page and on the article pages that this is what you are doing. This means that your material can be copied and used freely by others under the terms of that licence on any web page - not just here. I think other wikivoyagers will always get suspcious when a large amount of obviously well developed text appears in an article all at once, so whatever you can do to draw attention to the fact that the material is yours, and not travelnt, would be useful.

Region guide status[edit]

I saw you were interested in promoting the Northern Territory article to guide status. The article is already fantastic, but to make it a guide, all linked subregions, cities, towns, and other destinations must be at least "usable status." It's a tall order ;) --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:25, 25 September 2008 (EDT)

Your work is really looking great! I took a look around the Northern Territory articles, and spotted a couple issues.
First, ideally, specific listings should be placed in individual destination guides (cities & parks) rather than the region articles. I'd only include listings in the region articles when the town they are in is too small to write about, or if they are off in the wilderness and too far away from any town to include them in a city/town article. So the region articles should be mostly just prose.
Second, all linked destinations must have at least usable status to consider the region article a guide; for the region to be a star, all linked destinations must be at guide status. So articles like Top End Australia, for example, should be created and filled out.
Keep up the great work! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 17:11, 25 November 2008 (EST)

A pat on the back[edit]

I know most of the info, has already been written beforehand, but you're still doing a hell of a job, integrating it here. Nice Work! :-) (WT-en) Sertmann 19:35, 25 September 2008 (EDT)

No, i haven't visited - but before i wither away from old age, i want to have traveled around the world, from Copenhagen to Copenhagen without flying. I'm doing it in steps, and did a big one this summer taking the Trans-Siberian railroad to Japan. So at some point I'm gonna jump on a cruise ship from Bali or Singapore to Darwin :-)

top end australia[edit]

Hi again, been reading your work in the NT. Glad to see you are still here, and still going strong.

I not too keen on the name "Top End Australia", though! :-) It seems to me to include the region name in the heading, rather than being the common name for the region. We could just use Top End, if there is no disambiguation necessary - or Top End (Northern Territory) if there was. Does the region spread into WA and Qld? --(WT-en) Inas 18:59, 26 November 2008 (EST)

Copyright notification[edit]

The onus on you is to provide an official notification of copyright release on the talk page. If you are unable to do so, we'll have to blank it again, because the site lists it as copyright. (WT-en) Texugo 00:38, 1 December 2008 (EST)

Article review[edit]

I gave a pretty thorough look at Darwin and Northern Territory—both are pretty close to guide status, and could get there with a little push.

In any rate, hats off to you with all this great work—your work on Wikivoyage seems to me a model of how tourism professionals should contribute to Wikivoyage.

Northern Territory[edit]

This article is looking like it will be Wikivoyage's first guide-level region (kudos!). To get there it basically just needs some copyediting to transform sections into tighter prose.

  • Understand:
  • Information needs to be put in more general form, with links to the appropriate destinations: take out the individual sections for destinations, and merge that content back into the general prose description of the region (with links to the individual destinations within that prose), into the destination 1-liner descriptions, and into the articles themselves. The 1-liner descriptions (in "cities" and "other destinations") should be no longer than one sharp and to the point sentence, but should give a clear impression of what the destination has to offer to a traveler.
  • See
  • transform bullet list into prose
  • itineraries: are these all marked roads? If so, it might be best to note that in a short introduction to the itineraries section. Or are they more complicated routes.
  • Eat
  • like understand, I think this information should be moved back into a few paragraphs giving an overview of what eating in the NT is like. All the information can stay, just in a prose format.

Darwin[edit]

Darwin still has some work to be done—the bulk of which entails adding more listings, and working on the existing ones.

  • Buy:
  • Ideally, there would be more individual listings & direction as to where the major retail areas are (what part of the city); if there are any other major retailers, boutiques, etc., that would be of note to visitors, please add them. (I don't know whether there are.)
  • Eat:
  • There is a lot of prose content here—too much in fact. Move prose content into listings; shorten the prose to just a brief overview to orient the traveler.
  • many listings lack addresses & hours
  • there are a lot of potential listings for this section. If it makes sense to separate them first by neighborhood/district, second by price, please do so.
  • Drink:
  • Australia is a pub nation, so my hunch is that Darwin needs more drink listings; Brown's should clearly be listed, since it is mentioned in both the introduction and in the Northern Territory article itself
  • Lastly, it would be nice to have more pictures to break up the long text sections (to make the article easier on the eyes)

Additional comments[edit]

Yes, Kakadu seems to me at the very least a usable article, if not a guide. I'm wholly unfamiliar with the area, so I can't judge the "completeness" of the article—requisite for guide status. I have no more real concerns about the Northern Territory article, so I bumped it up to guide status. That's the first true guide-level region on Wikivoyage! I've also suggested it as destination of the month. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:46, 25 February 2009 (EST)
