Sacred sites

Good job on the Hindu section of Sacred sites. With regard to respect, what about mentioning the rules about vegetarian food, leather shoes, and alcohol at Hindu temples - necessary? (WT-en) WindHorse 11:30, 1 March 2007 (EST)

Adding the festivals is a good idea, and if finally the consensus is to change the focus of the article, the info will still be useful. When a village or city itself is considered sacred, such as Bodh Gaya or Varanasi, then the town is listed first, but when town is not equal to the sacred site, then the temple is listed as the sacred site and the town as the place where it is located. For example, we talk about Haridwar or Varanasi as being sacred cities, but Delhi? The same principle is used in the 'Other destinations' section on the India article. First question: I think start with the major festivals, because the general sacred sites article is aimed more for providing info for casual tourists. More specific info relating to local festivals can be given on the pilgrimage itineraries. Likewise, with symbols, I think just add the common ones that tourists will see on short visits to major temples and encounter in restaurants, dhal bhat and chai stores. Otherwise, we will end up with a telephone directory of symbols, which rather than helping tourists gain some basic understanding about the things they encounter, will confuse them. Second question: If it can be done neatly and precisely, like with the train schedule for Guangzhou, then, yes, maybe it is a good idea. However, it is going to be a huge list that dominates the page, then maybe not. If you check, most cities don't have the schedules listed, and mostly for that reason. However, as Shimla is small and doesn't have either a frequent train or plane service, it might be ok. What's your opinion? Usually when I consider adding a schedule, I try to see it from both the prospective of the benefits to travelers as well as the overall aesthetics of the article. The 11 official languages are:

In addition to the official languages there are a number of others that are in common use as there are large Indian, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Greek and Chinese communities in South Africa.

Fanagalo, a language invented primarily for the mining industry is also in general use as a second language by hundreds of thousands of current and ex miners.

Kolkata

Are you placing Park Street under Maidan or Esplanade? I've been adding listings for Park Street, Sudder Street and J.L. Nehru Road (north of Park Street) under Esplanade. Hold on. Ask Evan if there is a language file already written up in Hindi. Translations of the MediaWiki php file are becoming increasingly available and complete, so before you go and start translating all the interface files be sure to ask him, if he doesn't already have access to a file. Since you're interested in linguistics you may be interested in checking out Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) OpenCourseWare [1]. It's free for anyone to use and is licensed under a Creative Commons license, albeit non-commercial. Anywho, they provide information about linguistics courses (Chinese, German, and French, come to mind) and resources. Tilde

Howdy Upamanyu,

I just wanted to point out that the tilde (~) isn't always in the same place for everyone. As an example, on my laptop it's located near the space bar, however, since my laptop is going bonkers I had to purchase a new keyboard and on it the key is located near the "Escape" key. And when I switch to the German keyboard what pops up when I hit the key under the "Escape" key is "°". Hindi babel

Can you check out the babel templates for Hindi that I created (actually just copied the one for hi-3 that was made on shared and did my best to find appropriate words to swap out for each of the other levels). Suggestion

I suggest you don't quit over your failed admin application. As I said, see it as an experience and learn from it. Everyone is opposed by others at some time. That is part of life's experiences. You cannot change that any more than you can stop Delhi becoming an oven in April and May, but you can choose how you react. And, I think the best way to react is not to over-react, but instead try to see the situation from other people's view point. For example, if a new guy entered you class and you caught him out on a lie, would you trust him immediately after. Probably not, right? However, if he didn't lie again and he became your friend, then slowly you would forget about that transgression and he would gain your trust and confidence. However, it would take some time for that to happen. It wouldn't happen straight away, right? This situation is the same. So, try to see it from the admins point of view. They are not against you, but just need a little more time to regain their confidence. Can you understand that? So, I suggest that you just keep doing a good job, and within a few months I'm sure people will trust your judgment and you will be accepted as as admin. Anyway, personally I hope you hang around. You have been really helpful and have offered some very insightful and interesting comments. By the way, I'll probably be away from internet connections for a few weeks from next week, so I won't be active on WT. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 03:17, 23 March 2007 (EDT)

FYI, I'm probably going to create the page names in English at first, partly because it will be easier for me to add the templates to new articles ( {{subst:smallcity}}, etc) , but also because I don't want to wrongly guess at the proper names for those templates. When you do translate the page names, you could just move the pages to the new names, though if possible it would be nice for me (and perhaps Sapphire, etc) to also have the English ones in existence so we can help out more, in which case you should just create new pages and copy in the info. Contributions

Greetings from Ohio Upamanyu! As we know, you are a very good contributor to wikivoyage, may I make a suggestion. One of the things that wikivoyage is lacking, is good photo's. They have a lot of good ones, but when you consider the area they are covering, they only have a few. This may be one of the many areas in which you could be a great help. Some whine about Photoshop, but it is a great tool and a way to crop and enhance what may be a useless photo. Some tips:1.)Take a lot of photos. A memory card that can hold a 1,000 photos and can be reused is about US25.00. 2.) In many cases (landscapes, buildings, cities} is may be best to get far back from the subject and then crop out what you want. 3.)Lighting is of utmost importance. Usually, it is best to have the light source to your back. When outside blue skies will usually add a lot to the beauty of the photo or subject. 4.) Take a lot of photo's. 5.) Take a lot of photo's. 6.) Take a lot of photo's. You get the idea. I find your country to be very interesting, they say a photo is worth a thousand words. One last word of advice. Keep your original photo's stored on a memory type that you can access when you are my age (60). It will bring back many pleasant memories. Best of luck to you young man!
