Altering a policy page[edit]

moved to here from User talk:203.144.143.4

Altering a policy page and then immediately referencing it as justification for edits is slightly shady, fyi – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 00:01, 7 January 2008 (EST)

I removed the Wi-Fi directory links per existing policy, and then added Wi-Fi directories to the policy page as they are obviously already covered but not individually mentioned. ~ 203.144.143.4 00:13, 7 January 2008 (EST)
Where is the existing policy? I think some people may agree with you that we don't want those links, but you changed the External Links policy to justify your edit, which just seemed a little strange to me... didn't mean to sound harsh, as I kind of agree about not having the links to wifi directories, but if it was already a policy before you just changed the xl page, it's not one I was aware of – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 00:17, 7 January 2008 (EST)
As I've already stated, I DID NOT change the External Links policy to justify my edit. Please re-read my explanation, above.
For previous discussion/consensus, where I requested opinions & clarification (and which you took part in) see Project:External links/Archive#Lists of wireless Internet hotspots ~ 203.144.143.4 00:29, 7 January 2008 (EST)
Your explanation above was not clear, but the link you just provided shows me what you're referring to... and although a small inconclusive discussion on a talk page doesn't constitute a policy, I lean towards agreeing with your change to the policy, so I'll stop arguing with you now  :) – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 00:38, 7 January 2008 (EST)
One more time: I DID NOT change the policy. Thanks. ~ 203.144.143.4 02:26, 7 January 2008 (EST)
So this wasn't you?(WT-en) cacahuate talk 02:55, 7 January 2008 (EST)
What not to link to clearly states: "Avoid linking to secondary sources - for example, avoid links to:". Links to Wi-Fi hotspot directories are secondary sources, hence I removed the Wi-Fi directory links per existing policy (which I'd taken the time to confirm in advance). I then added "Wi-Fi directories" to the list of explicit examples, again in accordance with existing policy. I DID NOT change the existing policy.
You said "you changed the External Links policy to justify your edit". I DID NOT change the External Links policy to justify my edit. ~ 203.144.143.4 03:12, 7 January 2008 (EST)

one-liner listings[edit]

moved to here from User talk:203.144.143.4

oops, here we are again... discussions on talk pages do not constitute a policy... please don't refer to them as grounds for Manual of Style, etc changes... if the conversation on the talk page wasn't strong enough to get the policy changed, then it's not yet relevant, imho – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 00:42, 7 January 2008 (EST)

I've now created Project:One-liner listings and moved the discussion to Project:One-liner listings. Thanks. ~ 203.144.143.4 02:26, 7 January 2008 (EST)

New Orleans/Mardi Gras[edit]

Hi. Please see Talk:Mardi Gras. As the article is New Orleans specific while Mardi Gras is also celebrated elsewhere, I suggest having the article somewhere reflecting this. Thank you. Cheers, -- (WT-en) Infrogmation 12:18, 22 January 2008 (EST)

Great, thanks. Could you please take care of moving the article to "New Orleans Mardi Gras"? I can't do it myself as there is already a redirect at that title. Thank you. -- (WT-en) Infrogmation 13:09, 23 January 2008 (EST)

On Strike[edit]

Nice sign you posted there. If you are going to toy-toy (SA slang for picketing), let me know and I'll join in. Lately my contributions have reduced considerably due to the site slowness. I'll do one or two changes and then get fed up with it all. --(WT-en) Nick 02:18, 21 February 2008 (EST)

Would this be a writers' strike, then? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:41, 21 February 2008 (EST)
More like a janitor's strike. One can live without writers for a while, but the place will quickly become filthy and stinky if there are no janitors to clean up all the time --(WT-en) Nick 03:00, 21 February 2008 (EST)
I suppose I'm picketing, but it won't go further than my userpage anymore... I've emailed IB, posted tech requests, and commented in the travelers pub.. and that's already far more than I feel I should have had to do – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 10:52, 21 February 2008 (EST)
Ha! It's not just me then? I thought it was some kind of a "net split" where I had bad routing. I do find that if I pound the edits and reloads enough times I seem to get improved access times ... or am I kidding myself? Anyhow, if we're striking, I'm down for it as I could use another break. -- (WT-en) OldPine 11:02, 21 February 2008 (EST)

United States of America[edit]

Could you explain what was wrong with my edit? (WT-en) President Afleitch 10:10, 29 May 2008 (EDT)

Yes. As a generalization, young people are more tolerant of homosexuality in the US, not less... which is why it's becoming more tolerated in our society, and why gay marriage is slowly moving towards legalization – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 17:29, 29 May 2008 (EDT)
Are you sure you read my edit correctly? I'd have to be an idiot to think young people are not more pro-gay than older people. (WT-en) President Afleitch 20:31, 29 May 2008 (EDT)
Of course not, I find it more fun to skim and make mistakes... was the double-negative that threw me. Either way, it's saying the same thing, change it back if you like :) – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 20:39, 29 May 2008 (EDT)

Wine tourism in the US[edit]

Since you seem to be a Californian, I thought I'd ask you for a bit of help. Would you be willing to help me a bit with the (currently nonexistent) US section of Wine tourism, at least Napa and Sonoma? And if you're not able to do it, could you please let me know who to contact? I'd do it myself but I've never visited California wineries and don't have a lot of experience on American wine in general. Thanks a lot. (WT-en) Timo Laine 14:19, 23 June 2008 (EDT)

Hello 2u too[edit]

Sorry for not being around :) but I've got to study for my Grade 10 Exams (they're called boards here in India). I was planning to do my assignment in Calcutta, but there was no wi-fi hotspot around. So I had to rent a datacard that offered me a 200mbps connection (I'm not kidding). And the worst part was that the damn thing got disconnected every 2 minutes, so half my assignmnt is still incomplete. And I'm having to do both things now, and I can't even find time to watch cricket (the Asia Cup's on). What a life :( User:(WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 07:53, 29 June 2008 (EDT)

Splitting Viñales article into two articles[edit]

One technical question: how do I format each map to align next to its hike?

I don't agree with your splitting the Viñales article into two articles. This might make sense in the future, when there's two much info for one article. But the article was a nice length, not too long nor too short. Now the town article is too short. In the United States national parks and their supporting towns (e.g., Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park) are clearly separated but in Cuba farmers and other people live in the national parks. It might seem obvious to move the "drink" and "sleep" sections to the town, but the discotheque in the cave is well away from the town, as are the hotels and the campground. Lastly, there's too many tourists that go to Viñales, stay at a tourist hotel, lay by the pool and drink mojitos, and are unaware of the many interesting things to do in the area. My vision for the article is that people considering going to Viñales will add a hike, a cave tour, and a discotheque visit (and spread some of their tourist dollars around the locals, instead of giving it all to the military-owned resorts).--(WT-en) Chapayev 20:20, 1 July 2008 (EDT)

Hey there... there's no minimum amount required to get a city article started, see Project:Article status for details, outline articles are fine to be created... HOWEVER, I pulled out my Cuba guidebook and actually read about Viñales and looked at some maps, and you're right!!!! the park and town I think should be one article, so I've recombined them, and put it at Viñales, since that's the most commonly used name for the area (we don't care about official names so much around here). See Talk:Viñales.
As for the map alignments, there isn't enough text in the article right now, so they tend to stack up on each other and get forced below the bottom of the article.... not much you can do about that until the article grows in length!  :) – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 21:20, 1 July 2008 (EDT)
Looks good! The combined article makes you want to go there—where else combines outdoor stuff such as hiking and cave exploring with social stuff such as nightlife and mojitos? After a little more work on the article how about nominating it for a star?--(WT-en) Chapayev 10:25, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
It is looking good! I'd say quite a lot more needs to happen though before it reaches star status.... we need to create a Wikivoyage-style map, expand all of the sleep options and listings, same with eat, describe the sites in more detail, etc.... but it's coming along! – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 16:18, 2 July 2008 (EDT)

How do I create a template?[edit]

Hi, I want to create a template for Indian Railways' station codes in India, on the lines of the IATA and ICAO templates for airport codes. How do I go about it? Regards, (WT-en) SBC-YPR 12:36, 24 July 2008 (EDT)

Hey! Well, I'm not sure a template is really a necessary step, since it wouldn't save any time, and probably shouldn't link anywhere the way that the IATA one does... I think the way that they're done right now on the Delhi page is the way to go, and the easiest way to do that is to just type it manually. Were you thinking of something more complex than that? – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 21:23, 24 July 2008 (EDT)
Thanks! Not really, I was thinking of something on similar lines...see what i've done on Bangalore. Regards, (WT-en) SBC-YPR 06:06, 25 July 2008 (EDT)

I can't use Cacahuate maps?[edit]

WTH?

I'm having troubles using your SVGs—the text gets all big for some reason when I open them. Here's a png of what's happening. Any idea why this would be? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:11, 10 September 2008 (EDT)

I've had similar problems when opening other people's svgs, though not quite as dramatic as that... California was pretty jumbled when I opened it... have you worked on others and not had same problem? Try one of LtPowers and see if you have the same problem. I can't even begin to imagine what would be creating it. It seems to have stripped all text fomatting, the water and states are now black too instead of blue and grey, and italics removed. FWIW I'm using the latest version of Inkscape on a Mac – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 11:59, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
Unfortunately, the emailed svg had the same problem. I haven't had this problem with Nick's maps, and I just tried one of LtPowers'—that worked fine too. It would be awful if there is an interoperability problem between Mac & PC for inkscape SVGs! But I do work on a PC, so it would be good to figure out what other people are using to try and rule this out. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 12:46, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
And I'm using Version 0.45, if that's relevant. I think 0.46 just came out --(WT-en) Peter Talk 12:55, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
Try upgrading? I kinda doubt that's it, but it would be awesome if it's that simple – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 18:56, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
The SVG file works for me -- I'm using Inkscape 0.46 Windows version. (WT-en) Shaund 00:23, 12 September 2008 (EDT)

Both Firefox and Safari can view SVG files directly. Both have issues with that SVG. -- (WT-en) Colin 19:03, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

Hmm, interesting. I do wonder then if it's the version, since you're on a pc Shaund... thanks for checking. Colin I checked on my machine too with browsers... Safari all the sizes and things were fine, just the font was different, but right size and colors. Firefox however was pretty messed up looking – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 02:12, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
It turns out this was a version issue... so we should recommend that all mapmakers use the most current version of Inkscape to avoid problems – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 19:56, 20 September 2008 (EDT)

India SVG[edit]

I was admiring the work that you guys are doing with the maps and noticed a red link for wts:Image:Map of India.svg (linked from wts:Image:Map of India.png). I'm guessing that may have been an oversight, and if so it would be truly excellent to have the SVG for that map made available. Nice work, by the way - I'm terrible with anything graphics related so I stand in awe of all that you guys are doing. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 01:18, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

Thanks! I think it's definitely one of the major things this site needs! And you did a good base for California, give yourself some credit! Anyway I haven't uploaded a lot of svg's yet until we've honed our MoS a bit more, then I'll tweak them all and upload... I think it gets messy if they start getting translated and strewn across multiple language versions, then I feel guilty making large changes to them, so trying to do that first – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 12:02, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
Makes sense regarding the SVG uploads. And I'd forgotten about the California map - you'd be amazed how long that simple thing took. San Francisco was even more of a struggle, so I'll probably have to stick to the occasionally programming and content additions, leaving the maps to the gurus :) -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 15:25, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

Disneyland naming convention[edit]

I think your renaming of the Disneyland article is way too ambiguous. The name "Disneyland" refers specifically to the single theme park, whereas "Disneyland Resort" refers to the entire complex of two theme parks, a shopping and entertainment district, and three hotels. See the articles for Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort Paris, and Tokyo Disney Resort - they all use their complete names.

Naming convention, continued[edit]

I just went over your reply and took some time to gather some thoughts; here is what I think:

  • There really ought to be exceptions to the naming convention, when it comes to destinations other than cities or countries. I mean, there's good reason why the article for Zion National Park (which I should also point out is a Star article, for which I've invested a tremendous amount of effort into the Walt Disney World article) is called just that and not just "Zion".
  • I also think that the title of just "Disneyland" could also apply to Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, or Tokyo Disneyland, creating even more confusion for French, Chinese, and Japanese readers.
  • As for the Walt Disney World Resort article, the name should either stay as it is or have only the "Resort" dropped; the "Walt" must stay put. The reason for this is clearly addressed in the infobox titled "An ode to Walt" in the Understand section. I have also been at a loss as to how to incorporate this quote into the article:
"Everyone has heard of the Ford cars. But have they all heard of Henry Ford, who started it all? Walt Disney World is in memory of the man who started it all, so people will know his name as long as Walt Disney World is here." -- Roy O. Disney

us map = edmonton[edit]

Hi there, I was wondering if you could do something small to the U.S. Map that you partially edited on United States of America. I was wondering if on the Canadian side, you'd put Edmonton back on like how it was-noticed you took it out. I'm not mad at you just wondering if you could do that because if Winnipeg (650,000 people)and Ville D'Quebec (749,000)is listed, Edmonton (1.1 mill)definitely needs to be listed. Happy first day of snow in Edmonton, (WT-en) ee talk 15:22, 11 November 2008 (EST).

The cities that are relevant as immediate gateways to the US are the ones that are on the US map, the argument you propose above is why it should be listed on the Canada map, but that argument doesn't work for the US map  ;) – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 17:39, 14 November 2008 (EST)
Okay, but you should probably get rid of Quebec City, as it's not really a "gateway" to the US. Too sad Edmonton isn't on there, another reason why it seems smaller than it is because most people wouldn't know the reason(s) you said. Keep Smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 19:44, 24 November 2008 (EST).

Never argue with a drunk, crazy person, or a woman, during that time of the month. It is like trying to teach a pig to sing. A complete waste of time and it just annoys the pig. (WT-en) 2old 12:11, 26 November 2008 (EST)

Bureaucrats are set up[edit]

Thank you for your list! They are all set up as bureaucrats. (WT-en) JuCo 14:34, 2 December 2008 (EST)

=-)[edit]

Hey Cacahuate! There is some things I wanted to talk to you with =-). One no hard feelings about last week, okay? That was an incident and should move on. Second, sorry if I overreacted with that (mainly to you). Aside from that, I said in my talk pg that I will start doing stuff outside of what I said but it is very minimal. That admin nom just reassures I should still keep it minimum ;). I do not see why people would leave because of it, I would be so flattered but I guess not every one takes it positively. I will probably never be an admin, anyways, eh ;)? Anyways, hope all is well and hope that clears things up hun. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 19:13, 3 December 2008 (EST)!!!!

There never have been any hard feelings, that's one of my points to you... this isn't a family, a therapy session, a 12 step program... we're here solely to create a travel guide, for the fun of it, without any real recognition... that's it! I have a few other points, but I've already made them to you over the past couple weeks, and you don't really seem to read them thoroughly and process them – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 00:39, 4 December 2008 (EST)
Okay-you don't need to be like that. All I was trying to do was be nice and apologise for my behavior I realise that this is not a therapy sesion, okay? I seriously do not get what I am not following, okay? Sorry. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 10:16, 4 December 2008 (EST).
Cacahuate. I would like to buy you a drink. You have the patience of a fine fellow. (WT-en) 2old 16:20, 4 December 2008 (EST)
Give me a shout if you're ever in LA (or on the North Shore in the next couple weeks :) – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 03:17, 5 December 2008 (EST)
Cacahuate.(WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 00:48, 5 December 2008 (EST)
Yes EE? BTW you're doing it again... I'm not being "like that"... I'm trying to help you pick up on the tone and goals of this site (and most wikis for that matter)... but again, rather than thinking about and processing what has been said to you, you just hit the edit button and try to engage in more neurotic conversation – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 03:17, 5 December 2008 (EST)
What is the matter with you? You have no feelings as far as I am concered, and I am sorry, I have them, okay? Also, explain what you mean by edit button? I am sorry for my rudness, but, tell me, if people were talking to you anywhere else but here like that, don't you think you'd take it very rudely? You make me sound stupid and like I should conform to not having feelings and you know what, give me a reason why I should not think you hate me...because I cannot think of one, okay? I am sorry. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 14:12, 5 December 2008 (EST).
For reals? – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 14:14, 5 December 2008 (EST)
What part¿ (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 14:16, 5 December 2008 (EST).
You in general. BTW I have plenty of feelings, but they don't belong here. Please re-read this conversation until you have a moment of clarity – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 14:22, 5 December 2008 (EST)
Why can't you have feelings on talk pages here where you can on forums, myspace/facebook, blogs, etc.? just because it is a wiki? Wow. And yeah, comment on me in general. But be careful-I tend to over analyz wha people say of me and remember it for a very long time. I also take it literal. Keep that in mind, and sure. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 14:25, 5 December 2008 (EST).
Because this isn't a social networking site... we are here solely to create a travel guide, and that's pretty much it... see non-goal #5(WT-en) cacahuate talk 14:29, 5 December 2008 (EST)

you realise that like no one uses wikivoyage extra, there is no point. i guess you could get peoples e mail or whatever or ask them to facebook or something but still. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 14:32, 5 December 2008 (EST).

Or, you could just focus on writing a travel guide – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 03:40, 6 December 2008 (EST)

say what you think of me. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 14:33, 5 December 2008 (EST).

I don't know you. But I think you're at your best when you focus on writing travel guides – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 03:40, 6 December 2008 (EST)

why did you want to comment on me in general? (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 10:22, 6 December 2008 (EST).

Since you asked it, I would like it answered. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 12:27, 7 December 2008 (EST).

Highway navigation box[edit]

Hi there. I have proposed a new sort of navigation box here. I would really appreciate your input. (WT-en) Texugo 06:47, 5 December 2008 (EST)

Thinking :) – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 14:03, 5 December 2008 (EST)
Hi again. I have implemented routeboxes for a sizable test region. Everyone seems really anxious to start rolling this out, but I want to make sure our strongest contributors like you are behind this, since it may very well sweep the site. The discussion is now here. If you could give it another whirl and let me know your thoughts, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance! (WT-en) Texugo 12:07, 14 December 2008 (EST)

Hamtramck and Highland Park[edit]

Hello Cacahuate! I have been creating district articles for Detroit, and I was going to make one about the cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park. While not part of the City of Detroit, they are both completely surrounded by it except where they border eachother. Do you think this is a good idea? And if so, could you delete the current articles for Hamtramck and Highland Park so I could make them as one district article for Detroit? --(WT-en) Local hero 12:13, 7 December 2008 (EST)

I am not familiar with Detroit, but it sounds like a similar situation to what we have in Los Angeles... Beverly Hills is its own city, but within the middle of LA... so we just left it at its own article, and didn't rename it to Los Angeles/Beverly Hills. If you really think that both of those cities should only be 1 article, combine them, and perhaps in that case put it at Detroit/Hamtrack-Highland Park. You can then redirect both of the old articles to the new one... that's a better option since people may actually search for one of those titles – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 12:47, 7 December 2008 (EST)
Okay, I took care of it. --(WT-en) Local hero 12:54, 7 December 2008 (EST)

Routebox test run[edit]

Hi, I went ahead and implemented a test region and everything is mostly complete. If you have time, please have a look at my full update here, give it a whirl, and let me know what you think. Thanks! (WT-en) Texugo 05:35, 14 December 2008 (EST)
