Hey Evan, I love WikiPedia. I'm going to Buenos Aires and Uruguay in March for 4-6 months + and was looking at info on your travel site. Not that you've been there - I saw Montevido on your wishlist - but I'm looking for a way to find out how to rent an apartment in/around either Montevido or Buenos Aires. I'm not too worried about finding something in the $200/month range once I get down there, but haven't really found anything too promising online, and I've been surfing some South American forums in Spanish. Do you know of anything/anyone that might be helpful? Again, I'm not too concerned, but I figure there should be something on the net that could point me towards a reasonable apartment. I'm in the process of contacting language schools.

Hello Evan, I'm a reporter in the San Francisco Bay Area, looking to write a story about Wikis. I'd love to interview you about WikiTravel. Can you please contact me at elee@cctimes.com? Thank you!

Wikivoyage skin seems about ready to go[edit]

Hey Evan, I'm thinking that the new skin seems about ready to go, at least as a trial run. I've fixed all of the outstanding bugs. What do you think? -- (WT-en) Mark 09:47, 1 Nov 2005 (EST)

Should User:(WT-en) Joakim Ziegler be de-admined per policy? His user page says he resigned, and he hasn't contributed in seven months. He can always be re-nominated should he return to activity. (I was just reminded of this because I was writing notes to admins to encourage Admin Nomintation input). -- (WT-en) Colin 14:44, 4 Nov 2005 (EST)

Yes, I saw it a day or so ago and made a note to de-sysop him. Thanks for the reminder; I just did it. --(WT-en) Evan 19:29, 4 Nov 2005 (EST)

Houston[edit]

Currently we have Houston & Houston (Texas). Since this one meets the "most-famous" rule I tried manually copying the contents of Houston (Texas) into Houston, but that failed. Attempting to delete Houston (and thus allow a move of the Houston (Texas) article) also fails. Any chance you could take a look and see what's going on? Thanks! -- (WT-en) Ryan 00:43, 11 Nov 2005 (EST)

I'm so foggy...[edit]

Thanks for moving the User talk:(WT-en) Bukele stuff around... I've been very spacey the last few days... :( -- (WT-en) Ilkirk 13:52, 15 Nov 2005 (EST)

RDF/Turtle stuff[edit]

So I read the log entry about the RDF stuff, but I've got questions. Should we use the simple Turtle markup that was listed in your second example or the upper version? And if I were to go crazy adding this stuff, where could I see its effect? -- (WT-en) Ilkirk 14:01, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)

On your FOAF page and the RDF special page, I get the following whitepage error: "The resource cannot be displayed" So no, I can't see all the hidden stuff on your FOAF page. -- (WT-en) Ilkirk 16:01, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)
You got it right on Chattanooga; I unfortunately started mixing up MediaWiki templates and RDF syntax in the same posting, which in retrospect was probably pretty confusing. Maybe the best thing is to use a template for this particular task; let's start with Template:isIn, and we can fix it up later, eh? So, to say some place is in San Diego County, you'd write {{isIn:San Diego County}}. Sound good? --(WT-en) Evan 16:07, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)
Oh, I should probably test on IE. Didn't do so yet, will try later today. --(WT-en) Evan 16:07, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)
That's me... the IE kid. At least I don't feel too bad being that guy since it seems to help everyone around here to see the bugs! -- 16:17, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)
No, it's good to know. I've been doing some experimentation and template expansion isn't working the way I wanted it to, though. Dang! Back to the drawing board. --(WT-en) Evan 16:39, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)
I don't know an awful lot about templates, but how important that it be that way? Could the rdf tags be added to the bottom of the Article templates - at least to begin with? -- (WT-en) Ilkirk 16:40, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)
Yes, absolutely! I was just thinking that using templates would make it easier. --(WT-en) Evan 19:05, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)
OK, I think that the {{isIn}} template works now. --(WT-en) Evan 01:20, 17 Nov 2005 (EST)

So this isIn template - that will handle breadcrumbing eventually, right? What about things like keeping up with the article's status: stub, needs formatting, etc. No pressure... I'm just thinking of the possibilities... -- (WT-en) Ilkirk 14:10, 17 Nov 2005 (EST)

Oh, absolutely! That's the whole point of this exercise. Using RDF means we can define all kinds of machine-readable properties and relationships on articles, images, places, people, and things. Some other things I've thought of:
  • License info. Adding multi-licensing information using "cc:licence".
  • Noting that a Wikivoyage article is derived from another article on the Web (like the CIA Factbook, say) and information about who wrote it.
  • Listing related articles; articles about similar places, linking destinations with the phrasebook for the language spoken there, linking itineraries to a destination guide
  • Article status, as you pointed out
  • GPS information.
I see three main steps to making any of these initiatives work: 1) find a vocabulary for describing the relationship, 2) adding the statements to articles, and 3) building a user interface to view or query the statements. Probably a 1.5 would be "create MediaWiki template to express the relationship", but I'm not sure that's always going to be the case.
I'll try and get an RDF page started today. There's a lot to talk about here. --(WT-en) Evan 14:41, 17 Nov 2005 (EST)

Election for a new administrator in french Wikivoyage[edit]

Hi Evan,

There is an election for one new administrator for the french wikivoyage. I've nominated (WT-fr) Julien because he has now a good experience on Wikivoyage (revert spam, check licence compatibility, etc.) and I think it's better to have 2 administrators dedicated to the french version. By the way, (WV-fr) Yann (an admin) has gave up Wikivoyage 6 months ago, what to do with him? --(WT-en) Quirk 15:34, 18 Nov 2005 (EST)

Evan, deadline is over, Rikouman has been nominated. Could you set admin rights to him? Thanks. --(WT-en) Quirk 07:31, 26 Nov 2005 (EST)

"Usable" vs. "Guide"[edit]

I noticed that you've been starting to get the statuses ("stati"??) updated for some of the US state pages, and was intrigued that you consider both the embryonic New Mexico page and the densely populated Hawaii page to be in the "Usable" class, even though there's a vast difference in content between the two. (I'm getting to the NM page -- patience, patience.) What is HI missing that keeps it from being a Guide in your opinion? And why is NM more than an Outline? Case studies might be useful as the transition to status reports continues; I, for one, would like to hear your reasoning. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 15:21, 20 Nov 2005 (EST)

I'm afraid you're probably going to be disappointed. B-) First, although we've got a fuzzy-but-usable set of definitions for the different statuses for city articles, the extension to region, country, phrasebook, itinerary, and travel topic articles is not really clear. So, I think it's going to take some time. Second, if there are 6000 articles divided into 5 status groups, that means there's going to be a lot of variation within each. Third, in doing these status assignments I've tried to use at least the spirit of the statuses. So if you could use a region article as a real guide, then I've been marking it "usable". Fourthly, I haven't been consistent and I think there's going to be a lot of work still to do. Fifth, I was more interested in doing the hierarchy templating rather than status marking, so I wasn't fully concentrating. Sixth: you're right, the NM page wasn't usable, and I've shifted it back down to "outline". Hope that helps. --(WT-en) Evan 18:06, 20 Nov 2005 (EST)
Well, that's a good comprehensive answer. :-) You make a good point about different standards for different types of articles, and I think it's an issue even within "cities" as a class. An incredibly comprehensive guide to Frozen Gopher, Minnesota may take less space than a bare-bones outline for Paris, and it's a high-quality guide we're after here, rather than a judgement of what places provide a high-quality experience (right?). Some discussion of standards probably needs to occur, but that's a work in progress.
Incidentally, I'm starting to populate the New Mexico entry, now that the articles on pieces of the state (at least the ones I know something about) are approaching maturity. You might poke your head back in on it every now and then, although I still have several days' work to do. I, for one, will be interested in tracking the evolution through Outline, Usable, etc., as seen by someone else. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 21:07, 20 Nov 2005 (EST)

Pseudo mirror reads data directly from wikivoyage.org[edit]

There is a pseudo mirror ( http://www.wikide.info/ , 66.225.237.74) of de: that does neither attribute authors nor gives credits or links to wikivoyage.org in any way. The worst is that it does not actualy mirror, but drawns the data directly from wikivoyage.org and shows them as its own contence. So it uses your resources. I have written them a mail, but I'm not sure if they understand German since the domain is registered in Turkey. Maybe, you should block this server from reading wikivoyage.org by a filter rule. Of course, it's not sure that it reads with the web server's ip. -- (WT-en) Hansm 16:41, 24 Nov 2005 (EST)

I checked their version of Cincinnati since I had tried several months back to translate the English version I had been working on to German and realized that everything seems to be ripped off from the German site. My evidence of this is the Maisonette restaurant, which, in statistical term was the best restaurant in the world. In the English version I make note of the fact that the restaurant has closed forever and will not reopen as was originally planned, however, in the www.wikide.info version the website fails to note this and gives only the info that was on the German version of Wikipedia's Cincinnati page. It doesn't seem that any info has been ripped off from the Engligsh version of Wikipedia.

-(WT-en) Sapphire

After sending a mail to wikide.info, the webmaster has promissed to change the server in accordance to the CC by-sa license and our Terms of use within one week. -- (WT-en) Hansm 03:46, 26 Nov 2005 (EST)

Great. I saw your email; thanks for that. I've shut down access from that IP address at the Apache level, so I hope they get their mirror operational some other way soon. --(WT-en) Evan 08:15, 26 Nov 2005 (EST)

Question about Kampong Cham article[edit]

I apologize if this is the incorrect medium through which to address this question, but I would like to know how you would like my Kampong Cham article to be improved? I intend to add sections for external links and drink in the future, but would appreciate to know exactly how you would like it to be improved.

Thanks! -CloutierFan02

I noted that the article was usable per the Project:article status guidelines. That's a good thing -- it means that the guide would be useful for travellers using it as their sole resource. Note that if you disagree you can change the status.
You are not solely responsible for the guide; we all work together to make Wikivoyage guides world-class. So I'm averse to assigning homework for you to do. However, if you're looking for areas of improvement, I think the listings should be more in accordance with the Project:manual of style, that there should be a street map (see Project:Mapmaking Expedition. I wouldn't worry too much about the external links, but if there are bars and cafes in the town, "Drink" would probably be welcome. --(WT-en) Evan 10:23, 6 Dec 2005 (EST)

Santa Fe spam[edit]

Unfortunately, it looks like your reverts on the Santa Fe article (see its talk page) didn't help. There was more stuff added from the same address after you made your fix. I deleted part of it (manually, so as not to wipe out the IsIn stuff you did), but another possible spammer address seems to be rearing its head. Bummer. I feel some pride in that article and don't want to see it spam-bombed. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 00:53, 9 Dec 2005 (EST)

Wanna play art critic? ;-)[edit]

Thanks for the kind words on the St. Francis photo; and if you don't mind doing a little more looking, then a small favor. I've been putting up a bunch of photographs at my (WT-en) Santa Fe photo page, in anticipation of turning Santa Fe (New Mexico) into a DotM (Ryan has nominated it). I'd like to add one or two more to the page but would value the opinions of you and a few other WT old hands as to which ones to include. Any suggestions/preferences? I can do a little more cropping. Feedback appreciated, and please solicit Maj's opinion too! -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 11:39, 10 Dec 2005 (EST)

Cyclic redirects[edit]

sv: "Destination of the month"[edit]

A question, how or can I edit the "destination of the month" and the log on the first page? I'll bring up a page where users can nominate articles to "destination of the month" but how do I, or we if the others turn up, then edit the "destination of the month"? --(WT-en) Adestro 18:24, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)

It looks like someone moved the entire contents into a few templates: sv:Mall:Artiklarna (where the DotM is), sv:Mall:Projekten, sv:Mall:Välkomnar, sv:Mall:Länklistan. You can edit those articles, or you can replace the source for the main page with their content, or whatever. --(WT-en) Evan 20:12, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)
Yep, found it in a bounch of templates. Thanks. --(WT-en) Adestro 03:57, 16 Dec 2005 (EST)
No problem. Let me know if there are any other issues. --(WT-en) Evan 15:35, 16 Dec 2005 (EST)

Taking decisions alone?[edit]

Since there is no activity yet on sv:, should I take decisions regarding policies, goals, how articles should look, templates, etc. on my own and then take the discussion as users drop in? If so, I'll try make it as similiar to the en: as possible.

I'm soon finished with all help and information pages, I'll drop a go-between report very soon. --(WT-en) Adestro 18:22, 16 Dec 2005 (EST)

I'm not Evan =), but I think yes, it's all up to you now — although the English guidelines should act as a base, and you should ask for feedback from other admins if you want to do something radically different (eg. the template-based listings used on ja:). Please also try to promote the Swedish Wikivoyage on any forums you feel appropriate, so you can get more people on board and kickstart the process. (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:49, 17 Dec 2005 (EST)
Yes, the problem is that none of the other admins are active. I've tried contacting some of them on Wikipedia but they're not answering. I will start to promote it as soon as I'm finished with the help and information articles. :) --(WT-en) Adestro 10:33, 17 Dec 2005 (EST)
I agree that as the sole active admin (and, really, the only active user) you have a lot of discretion, and I advise you to plunge forward and do what seems right. Take a decision, state it, and see if anyone argues.
I would appreciate it, though, if you factor in compatibility with rules on en: wikivoyage.org, or ones already established on sv:. Also, changing the goals is questionable -- people come to http://sv.wikivoyage.org/wiki/ for a Swedish-language Wikivoyage -- not, say, a shoestore advertisement or a Flash game about monkeys. --(WT-en) Evan 11:32, 17 Dec 2005 (EST)
Yes, I will try to get the other admins in. As for the goals I will probably just translate the en: article. --(WT-en) Adestro 11:49, 17 Dec 2005 (EST)

Go-between sv: log available[edit]

I've put a log at Project:18_December_2005. Please read it and tell me, in that article, what you think. (WT-en) Adestro 16:02, 18 Dec 2005 (EST)

Removing inactive sysops & message notification[edit]

Jpatokal said I should contact you regarding removing inactive sysops. Is that possible? New people have dropped in I know some people from Wikipedia that I'd like to nominate for sysop.

Yes, of course you should. I've de-admined the two admins who haven't been active for more than 3 months (our time limit on en:; I guess it should be the same for sv:). Let me know if you think others should be admins; a vote or nomination process would be nice, though. --(WT-en) Evan 19:50, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

Also, why is there no message notification system here like on Wikipedia? Like a string of text at the top of the page when you log in telling you that you got new messages. Or is that something Wikipedia have developed on their own? --(WT-en) Adestro 17:12, 19 Dec 2005 (EST)

See Project:Bug reports. New message notification is turned off because we use a special caching system. It'd probably be nice to implement just for when you log in. It's probably the worst bug with the caching system right now. --(WT-en) Evan 19:50, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

Usage problems[edit]

Hi Evan! Swedish Wikivoyage has a few technical issues where we need some urgent assistance. Please have a look at your talk page Talk:Evan. Kind Regards, (WT-en) Riggwelter 04:15, 30 Dec 2005 (EST)

I've dealt with the easy ones. A couple of things: you can link to an sv: page like this: [[:sv:pagename]]. So sv:Användardiskussion:Evan should work. Also, bug reports should probably go on Project:Bug reports. --(WT-en) Evan 20:01, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

Illinois and state regions[edit]

Sigh... So the top-level page is reverted. I am not skillful enough with markup to avoid a circular redirect on the regions. Want to have a go at it?

The practice on region names in states isn't really uniform, whatever the convention is. I dug into some of the region names in other states (e.g. Central (New Mexico), which in fact you set up originally) and observe that there is inconsistency even within individual states (check out Ohio and its regions). Majority practice so far seems to be to create regions with the syntax "North(ern) (foo)" for state regions based on compass points, but descriptive regions (e.g. Chicagoland in Illinois) without the state name. This is as I had Illinois before today's revert, but whatever. I'm not sure this is a battle worth fighting, but in any event, someone else can fight it. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:57, 30 Dec 2005 (EST)

The important thing to remember is that the parentheses aren't part of the article name. And I think we need to revisit the regions in NM; you're right, they sound wrong. --(WT-en) Evan 14:07, 30 Dec 2005 (EST)

What is it?[edit]

What is isin? (WT-en) Kingjeff 19:15, 30 Dec 2005 (EST)

See Project:Breadcrumb navigation. --(WT-en) Evan 19:41, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

Issues[edit]

Hi Evan! Swedish Wikivoyage has, again, some technical issues where we need some assistance. Please have a look at your talk page Talk:Evan. Our admin, Adestro, is also waiting for his issue regarding removing old and inactive admins. Kind Regards, (WT-en) Riggwelter 15:52, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

wikiHow[edit]

Hi Evan, my name is Jack Herrick and I'm one of the founders over at wikiHow, which is a wiki site trying to build a how-to manual. I've been a long time admirer of wikiTravel. Congrats on starting something that is already useful and will become increasingly so. I noticed on your user page that you will be in the bay area for the next few days. I live in Palo Alto and would love to get lunch with you if you are in the area. Let me know if you will be available. I won't check my wikiTravel talk page, but you can leave me a note at jackspam@ehow.com or on my wikiHow talk page http://wiki.ehow.com/User_talk:JackHerrick

Best,

Jack H.

automatic templates[edit]

I was wondering if there was some possibility to have some "automatic expanding template". To explain it I make the reference to signatures: you write a certain code --~~~~ it will be changed into certain information.
Since most of our destinations have a pretty fixed layout, it would be very practical to write --country-- and see it replaced with ==understand== ==do== ==see== ==travel== ...
I think this would benefit to everyone: longtime users don't have to go copy paste for every new destination and new users will follow our layout better. Is this possible? --(WT-en) Twopeak 06:18, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)

Things work like this on en:; the article at Template:Smallcity is inserted when you add {{subst:smallcity}} to a page and save it. --(WT-en) Evan 11:37, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)
Great, it works on the dutch site as well! Thank you. On little thing though: there are now 3 pages with the template: the extended template, the quick template and the subsitute template. I guess the answer will be no, but it would be nice if all could take titles from the extended template (so it only needs to be changed once) --(WT-en) Twopeak 12:08, 5 Jan 2006 (EST)
That would be nice, and no, there's not an easy way to do that. On the plus side, after the first few weeks those templates aren't going to change very often. --(WT-en) Evan 12:13, 5 Jan 2006 (EST)

new WikiTraveller in Menlo Park[edit]

Evan, I am a relatively new, but already addicted WikiTraveller. I see you are going to be in the Bay Area until next week and wondered if you had time for lunch or coffee? Would love to learn about how I can get more involved. You can drop me a note on my talk page if you have time. Thanks, --(WT-en) Kirasw 4 Jan 2006 (EST)

Argh! We're leaving the Bay Area early tomorrow; we've been doing family stuff most of the time (everyone wants to meet the 4-month-old baby). I'll respond to your email; maybe we could have a quick coffee at Kepler's? --(WT-en) Evan 00:42, 5 Jan 2006 (EST)
Too bad! I thought you were in town until the 14th. I am booked most of the day at work tomorrow (darn that work thing), but I could probably get together later in the day. Sounds like you will already be gone? Maybe we can connect on the phone? --(WT-en) Kirasw 5 Jan 2006 (EST)
We're in Southern California until the 14th. Sorry I missed you, but I'd love to talk by phone if you'd like. I'll send email with my contact details. --(WT-en) Evan 00:30, 7 Jan 2006 (EST)

Editing navigation menu?[edit]

Is it possible to edit the navigation menu somehow? The name of the "Traveler's Pub"-item in the menu on sv: isn't what it's called . --(WT-en) Adestro 18:32, 6 Jan 2006 (EST)

Spam attack[edit]

The two attacks occured a few hours apart, and each attack inserted a different URL, so the second attack was immune to a spam filter. If we catch an attack, we can halt it midstream with the filter, but since the attack only lasted 10 minutes... Of course, even IP Blocking doesn't really work. We're just forcing them to get a zombie per edit, which isn't very hard. Any other ideas on how to handle this? In theory one could have a Tool that analyizes recent changes for a given suspect URL, figures out the set of users involved, and then rolls back those changes even when multiple users alter a single file... but that sounds like work. -- (WT-en) Colin 01:15, 7 Jan 2006 (EST)

Yeah, it seems like it was really hard. I didn't realize the URLs were rotating too. I guess a two-pronged approach (blocking IPs plus blocking URLs) is the best we can do. There are probably also some other things we could flag (multiple identical diffs from non-logged-in users, for example). --(WT-en) Evan 01:37, 7 Jan 2006 (EST)
Looks like User:(WT-en) Mark was somehow clobbered by whatever happened too. At least when I try to access his pages, bizarre redirects happen. Is that just me? Can you see his page? -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 15:16, 8 Jan 2006 (EST)
As (WT-en) Huttite pointed out, it's an error in our caching system. It writes HTML files to the file system, and when looking for http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User:Mark Apache will take either http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User:Mark..html or http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User:Mark.html. I'll see if I can figure out a way to make it check the difference. --(WT-en) Evan 00:19, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)

Steffen M.[edit]

Hi! After an argument with an other user our Admin (WT-de) Steffen M. has asked me to write you. I should ask you to remove his amin-status. Today he removed all information from his userpage. Maybe you ask him before you do it - when he answers. I hope my Enlish is not too bad. Greetings from the beautiful Cambodia -- (WT-en) DerFussi 06:46, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)

Your English is fine, but we do need an active go-between for this kind of problem. Would you do it?
I'll try to contact Steffen M. through email and see what the issue is. Meanwhile, can you figure out a way to resolve their argument? Also, enjoy Cambodia! --(WT-en) Evan 11:55, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)
I can do that. But I hope he will reply to your message. These both users had some arguments. The problem was: It's hard to persuade Steffen M.'s opponent. He is a little bit obstinate and he thinks that everybody works against him and against our rules. And Steffen M. has used some wrongs. So the discussions escalated. I've just started a new discussion about the geographical hierarchy in Germany. And I hope a lot of users will participate. -- (WT-en) DerFussi 00:10, 10 Jan 2006 (EST)

Using Wikimedia Commons[edit]

What's your opinion on uploading and retrieving images from [Wikimeda Commons] to spare bandwith on your server(s) and make the images available to others? We've had a discussion about this and decided it was best to ask you. Even though Wikivoyage ain't any Wikipedia sister-project, I like this idea. --(WT-en) Adestro 10:19, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)

We have a shared image repository for the Wikivoyage language versions. The server is doing fine w/r/t bandwidth; serving images is fine. --(WT-en) Evan 11:34, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)
Oh, didn't know about that. Will there be some kind of structure on the page or are images just randomly uploaded? I could make and maintain a register at the main page, if noone else isn't working on that. --(WT-en) Adestro 16:09, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)
It's brand new, just a couple of days old. I think probably having some kind of geographical hierarchy would be useful. Let's discuss there. --(WT-en) Evan 16:18, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)
I started a discussion Here. --(WT-en) Adestro 16:34, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)

New swedish admin[edit]

Hi Evan, I have been elected new admin at swedish Wikipedia, according to this election process. Could you carry out the necessary settings adjustments, pls? (WT-en) Riggwelter 10:25, 12 Jan 2006 (EST)

I hereby confirm that the process is valid. --(WT-en) Adestro 10:39, 12 Jan 2006 (EST)
Please let me know when the change is carried out. (WT-en) Riggwelter 10:58, 14 Jan 2006 (EST)

Terms of use[edit]

Evan, I am working on the translation of pages in the Wikivoyage:-namespace, but have found a sentence which for me is impossible to translate (just because of the web-technical lingo...so, I suppose I am ignorant in that sense). The sentence is to be found in Project:Terms of use and goes: For this reason, we ask that individuals or organizations wishing to re-distribute Wikivoyage content do not serve images from Wikivoyage for inclusion in their own pages, nor put Wikivoyage pages into framesets. Now, I understand what it says, and I know how I would like to put it in swedish, but the very meaning of it is incomprehensible. This has mainly to do with the parts regarding "serve images" and "put into framesets", which means absolutely nothing to me... Can you shed some light over it....? (WT-en) Riggwelter 03:56, 13 Jan 2006 (EST)

Basically, if somebody wants to reuse an image from Wikivoyage, they should make a local copy and use that copy. They should not load the image directly from Wikivoyage's servers each time somebody accesses their page. (WT-en) Jpatokal 04:01, 13 Jan 2006 (EST)
Cheers, I thought it was something like that. But what about the frameset thingy? (WT-en) Riggwelter 05:28, 13 Jan 2006 (EST)
Pretty much the same thing -- sites should not just add a wrapper around the page, so it looks like their own content, when it's actually downloading straight from Wikivoyage's servers. (WT-en) Jpatokal 05:55, 13 Jan 2006 (EST)
Thanks! Problem sorted. (WT-en) Riggwelter 06:05, 13 Jan 2006 (EST)

Good Welcome[edit]

Hi Evan, I just want to say that I thought that dual welcome to User:(WT-en) Tofoo was about the best wikiwelcome I've seen. I find the boilerplate in general to be a bit, well, stiff and automatic, so I thought this time that a good way to avoid that feeling would be to put it off for a bit. What you showed me is that it's possible perhaps to fix the boilerplate so that it doesn't pretend to be a personal message, and then to append it to a real heart-felt wealcome. Let's do that. -- (WT-en) Mark 16:38, 16 Jan 2006 (EST)

Swedish Wikivoyage has made two welcome templates, one for anonymous users in order to get them to sign up, and one for newly signed up users. Feel free to copy it. (WT-en) Riggwelter 13:14, 21 Jan 2006 (EST)

Mirroring WikiTravel[edit]

Hi Evan, i just moved over the discussion about mirroring Wikivoyage from de:Project:Stammtisch#Sperrung_von_IP_.2F_Wikivoyage_Spiegel, since you've answered me directly there in english. Well, i understand that a site should not draw the data directly from wikivoyage.org to present it on their own page, but i'm confused how a mirror could be established, since there is no database dump available. I made some tries to mirror it with wget over http, but since the pages do not include last-modified headers, timestamping does not work. Do you maybe have any ideas how to handle that? --Tom 13:41, 21. Jan. 2006 (CET)

Hi, Tom. I just checked and Wikivoyage web pages do set the Last-modified header, and MediaWiki and Apache both honor the If-Modified-Since request header. Special:Recentchanges is available as an RSS or Atom feed; that would probably be an easy way to track updates to the site. Please go easy; I think the typical polite limit for automated RSS readers is a maximum of one hit every 30 minutes. --(WT-en) Evan 14:39, 21 Jan 2006 (EST)

ja: time to admin Shoestring[edit]

14 days have passed and it's 4 for and 0 zero, so I think it's time to admin up ja:利用者:(WT-ja) Shoestring. (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:22, 23 Jan 2006 (EST)

Thanks. One more niggly admin thing for ja: — could you set the Recent changes text to this attempted edit? The current text is quite confusing. (WT-en) Jpatokal 09:17, 24 Jan 2006 (EST)
Sure, it's done. I did an editorial move and removed the meta.wikimedia.org link at the end. --(WT-en) Evan 11:04, 24 Jan 2006 (EST)
Can you also remove the "また次のページも参照して下さい。" bit at the end? It says "Please also look at the following link", which is kinda pointless now that said link is gone. (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:31, 26 Jan 2006 (EST)

Using a robot / script[edit]

Hi Evan! We're considering to ban the section external links from our articles. Is it possible to have the work done by a robot? I think, HansM is the only user who is familiar with that. But he's not active at the moment.

Thanks! Greetings from the cold Germany -- (WT-en) DerFussi 02:19, 25 Jan 2006 (EST)

We've got a low of -7C and a high of 1C today... Then again, that's pretty warm for this time of year in Montreal. Anyways, yes, it's possible. --09:32, 25 Jan 2006 (EST)

Could my Web site qualify as travel news?[edit]

Some high school friends and I have created a travel networking site at www.travbuddy.com Could I write a news article about the site, its growth, and our goals? Or would that be considered a form of advertising?

Please advise derek AT travbuddy.com or write back here... if thats how this works :)

Thanks!

pt: account created[edit]

Please check my account at Usuário:Rmx. I'm terribly busy at my job today but I hope to work a lot on pt: this afternoon. I am very excited about it too. Thanks for your efforts, (WT-en) Rmx 09:10, 27 Jan 2006 (EST)

Hi, Evan. Thanks for setting up the stuff on the Portuguese version. I tried editing 3 or 4 of the interface messages (by clicking the name then using editing screen) but the inserted text wouldn't show up on Allmessages nor become effective on the site itself. I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly but it looks like the names that you have edited aren't being modified too. Could you please give me a hand there? Thanks! (WT-en) Rmx 07:51, 30 Jan 2006 (EST)
It worked! The changes became effective. Thanks! (WT-en) Rmx 06:59, 1 Feb 2006 (EST)
