Welcome to Wikivoyage Shared, Peterfitzgerald/Archives (wts-old) 2007-2010!

If you want to specialize your experience you may want to consider editing your preferences. Before uploading please take a second to read over the copyleft, policies and guidelines, and the image policy but feel free to upload travel images. If you need help, check out the help desk, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the Travellers' pub.

Also, if you want to link to Wikimedia Commons try using [[:commons:Image:Name|Wikimedia Commons]]. There are no real added benefits, but it's still an option. -- (WT-shared) Sapphire (Talk) 18:20, 13 May 2007 (EDT)

Uploading instruction templates in different languages

Hi Peter! Your idea, language-specific text templates, is useful for new comers and helpful for shared too! But I'm not sure that the text is placed. Is it on How-To page of language versions, or user talk page as a message?

By the way, currently, ja: isn't promoting to use shared: positively, so I was thinking that I should modify ja:MediaWiki:uploadtext to say "Use the Wikivoyage Shared! But please remind that is not ja:, image information must be in english." But now I've remembered Ricardo's suggestion. Portuguese-language portal to Wikivoyage Shared is set up as a Portuguese Wikivoyage page, and is linked from the navigation toolbar instead of a link to Shared's main page. How about this way? -- (WT-shared) Tatata 04:34, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

Thanks

Thanks for your answer in the pub. Much appreciated. (WT-shared) OldPine 20:37, 27 August 2007 (EDT)

Votes for deletion

Hi Peter,

Sorry for bad news; I had to add Image:Kazan kremlin.jpg to Votes for deletion page because the source file was deleted on Commons... -- (WT-shared) Tatata 01:41, 4 September 2007 (EDT)

No need to apologize, I really appreciate that you are putting in the hard work to check this kind of information! --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 02:04, 4 September 2007 (EDT)

SAMOKOV Please note!!!! As any right minded person will appreciate the passage [[>"Quite a few Uk people have holiday homes or properties for rental in the area including the author."]] refers to the fact that the author (me, Lobbi, aka David Barker) refers to the fact that A) I am the author of the article, B) I have a property in the area.........which is quite probably why i know so much about the area!! Retrieved from "http://shared.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Samokov"

Thanks for clarifying that, and sorry for the misunderstanding. As you probably have noticed, your contributions have now been merged to en:Samokov per Votes for deletion#Samokov. Thanks for contributing! --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 17:57, 12 June 2008 (EDT)

Peter, what's the story with this photo? I've been to Great Sand Dunes many times, and while the scenery in the distance is entirely compatible with what I've seen there, the foreground is not. Might this have been an incompletely-cropped view of the dunes taken from a visitor center display or such? -- (WT-shared) Bill-on-the-Hill 17:58, 4 December 2007 (EST)

Hi Peter, sorry for bad news...

Tech:Site slowdown

Hi! Thank you for your reply to IB on the tech page. Since this has caused quite some commotion in the pub, would you like to post your reply there too? (WT-shared) Riggwelter 16:23, 21 February 2008 (EST)

А сами пригороды включил в Category:Suburbs of Saint Petersburg с помощью {{IsIn}}. -- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 04:39, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

-- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 04:39, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

--(WT-shared) Peter Talk 15:37, 24 March 2008 (EDT)
Category:Strelna (Leningrad Oblast). -- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 17:03, 24 March 2008 (EDT)

-- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 07:13, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

WtTech:D.C. has problems (on Wikivoyage too). ;-)

Vandalizm

-- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 17:26, 26 March 2008 (EDT)

--(WT-shared) Peter Talk 18:01, 26 March 2008 (EDT)
Пока буду сообщать в en:Project:Vandalism in progress. -- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 04:03, 27 March 2008 (EDT)

Best place to stay updated on GFDL-CC compatibility?

Hello Peter. I see you have contributed to Why Wikivoyage isn't GFDL where it says a new by-sa will be around in some months (relicensing to be compatible with GFDL licence). I wonder when that was written and if you can recommend a good way to stay updated on this. I'm kind of new to all this and preparing a wiki on leadership for which I consider dual licensing. I have a talk page on Wikivoyage. --(WT-shared) Kassoe 16:26, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

Admin request completed

Hi Peter! User:(WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev is all set on Shared. Thanks! (WT-shared) JuCo 15:19, 7 July 2008 (EDT)

  2. Coat Land

-- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 03:07, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

--(WT-shared) Peter Talk 03:24, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
-- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 15:33, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
--(WT-shared) Peter Talk 23:57, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

Image policy

Hello Peter.

Do you know any discussion on this policy change ?

I think the image policy were not incorrect, since it is the special rules for images. And, I think, that change does not contribute to sound operation of this project; like this. -- (WT-shared) Tatata 21:01, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

There was a ton of (heated) discussion on this topic back on the en:vfd page, although I'm not sure where it would all be right now. The tension is between what we want for older images and what we want in order to encourage higher standards now and in the future. Older images were not often marked with a license, but the upload form did (and does) say that any files uploaded without a specified license will be automatically licensed under CC-by-SA 1.0 (as are all text contributions to Wikivoyage).
Personally, I don't think it's that important for users to actively choose a license for their uploaded files. But, I think it is very important that they specify a source, since that lets us vet whether it truly is compatible with our licensing. Again, it's not at all practical to go through past images and delete those without sources, but I'd like to somehow force users to specify a source in order to upload anything. They still might lie and claim to be the sole author, but those can be easy to spot. --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 23:53, 19 August 2008 (EDT)
hmm, I thought it was important for money matters like the business of IB or WTP. Maybe, I worried too much.
That change doesn't make sense to me yet. But, anyway, thank you for your reply. -- (WT-shared) Tatata 03:37, 20 August 2008 (EDT)
The fact that the upload form says files w/o specified licensing will automatically be CC-by-SA 1.0 saves the site from any legal troubles. If someone is lying about the licensing (and doesn't provide a source), I'm not sure there's much we can do to stop them. In any rate, I'd never let a photo get into the WTP Chicago guide unless I knew for certain where it came from and that it was appropriately licensed! --Peter 03:48, 20 August 2008 (EDT)
Just for the record it's not a policy change. I was effectively reverting a policy change which had snuck in at some point in the last couple of years to the policy which we've used since late fall of 2003. -- (WT-shared) Mark 11:43, 20 August 2008 (EDT)
Oh, yeah? I knew the record. Here is the first version of "Wikivoyage:Image policy" on en:, written by Evan on 11 August 2003. And then, the next revision in late fall of 2003, he added something to it. For reference, it's better to look hard at the summary field to see what he was saying. -- (WT-shared) Tatata 02:03, 21 August 2008 (EDT)
The outcome of the heated discussion was that special:upload (the page which every uploader sees when they upload) has always informed users of the ccbysa1.0 by default, and I agree with Peter (etc) that this covers us legally. Do you believe that it doesn't? Is there a reason that you think images should be treated differently than text? If not, why keep pushing this issue, don't you want to keep as many images as we can legally use? (WT-shared) cacahuate talk 03:00, 22 August 2008 (EDT)

-- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 02:02, 27 August 2008 (EDT)

San Diego." --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 11:18, 27 August 2008 (EDT)
-- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 15:03, 27 August 2008 (EDT)
--(WT-shared) Peter 15:29, 27 August 2008 (EDT)

И ещё, что означает "Actually this might already be the case" (в моём словаре словосочетания "be the case" нет). -- (WT-shared) Sergey kudryavtsev 03:22, 28 August 2008 (EDT)

http://shared.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Category:Canaveral_National_Seashore Peter, I just uploaded some images from Wikipedia, but now I am not certain if they are compatible here. Could you have someone check them for me before I use them? Thank you. (WT-shared) Gamweb 13:26, 28 August 2008 (EDT)

They are some really nice photos, though. You might want to consider requesting that the WP authors cross-license their images "GFDL-CC-2.5," so we could use them here. People at WP are usually really good about doing that. --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 10:24, 8 September 2008 (EDT)

Photo removed from travelwiki page without known reason

Hi Peter! I just noted that a photo I had inserted into my Travelwiki page (http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Pinswang) titled, "Unterpinswang Glistens in the Winter Sun" has disappeared. There's nothing in HISTORY or EDIT to indicate when and by whom this was done. Would you by any chance know if it was randomly removed by a hacker, voted away (nothing about it under this tab either), or removed for some other reason? If it was mistakenly removed or hacked, I'd be happy to resubmit the image once again. Many thanks for your time and help with this! - Naz Ausgraben

It wasn't removed... our site was moved to new servers in the last couple weeks, and they're still working out the bugs.... you can see the image at Image:IMG 0146.JPG, but it's having trouble rendering in the article... don't do anything, it will be fixed soon.... sorry about that (WT-shared) cacahuate talk 12:24, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

MANY THANKS for your information and help, Peter and Cacahuate! Your work with this site is splendid and very much appreciated! - Naz

Anybody have any ideas what may be wrong with this image? The preview doesn't display - it won't embed in pages, yet the full resolution image appears just fine. Any ideas what I am doing wrong with this one? --(WT-shared) Inas 18:18, 13 November 2008 (EST)

It's working fine for me. My best guess is that the image cache was messed up? If that's the case, then clicking the history tab, then changing the word "history" in the resulting url to "purge", entering that, and then refreshing your browser window should cause the image to reappear. --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 19:05, 13 November 2008 (EST)
Thanks letting me know it worked for you. Eventually tracked down the problem to Filterset-G rule blocking the image. The rule seems much too broads, so I might report it over there.. --(WT-shared) Inas 20:51, 13 November 2008 (EST)

Removing an image

Hello,

I came across an image of mine that is not covered by Creative Commons here on Wikivoyage and I would like it removed please. http://shared.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Image:Great_Slave_Lake.jpg#file is the URL. Please remove, I will check back in a week to ensure it, and any other of my photos, have been removed.

With kindest regards,

Northern Xander

I have removed your photos, because its really not my aim to trouble you. But I reviewed that image personally, you did indeed license it as CC-by 2.0, and this license is irrevocable. Flickr does allow you to change the display on your photo page, but Wikivoyage, and any other site, would indeed have the legal right to use your image. I see you have also changed the display on this image , which was confirmed as CC-by 2.0 by both me on Wikivoyage, as well as by Wikipedia here. I will assume good faith and assume that you have simply misunderstood that the CC license is irrevocable, but to be clear, a less charitable interpretation is that you are indeed acting in bad faith. My hunch is that Wikimedia Commons will not be as accommodating as Wikivoyage. --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 22:05, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
Maybe we should add a similar template here, to insure that we don't run into to similar problems in the future, flickrs practice on this is indeed regrettable. {{ccreview|sertmann}} or something like that, anything you'd support? or should we just continue to be peaceful and friendly? (WT-shared) sertmann 23:06, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
Sounds like a good idea. If flickr images are checked by two pairs of eyes, then it's no longer a he said she said case. But re: aboveI don't make that sort of mistake. I restrict my searches to CC-by 2.0 and CC-by-SA 2.0 by default, and always double check the exact license. For flickr images that I use for WTP, I actually save screenshots of the flickr page just in case, but obviously that's not a practical solution if applied to every image we use. --Peter 03:28, 16 October 2009 (EDT)
I whipped up a quick template at Template:License review. We'll probably want to discuss policies and procedures about the template's usage at the Pub, or Talk:Image policy. (WT-shared) LtPowers 10:00, 16 October 2009 (EDT)

A bit of help with source linking please

Peter, any idea why for my map files, the source is not showing as a valid link? Eg: http://shared.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Image:Bali-Sanur-Map.png has "source=Image:Bali-Sanur-Map.svg" in the info template which is correct I am sure. In the Image Details box though this just shows as text and not a link. I must be doing something wrong but can't figure out what! I am also a little confused about parameters. If "location=Bali" and {{Map|Sanur|Bali}}, should this file not show in category: Bali, Maps of Bali, Maps of Sanur? It doesn't. Just want to make sure I get this right. --(WT-shared) Burmesedays 15:03, 31 October 2009 (EDT)

And Image:Japan regions map.svg as well. Don't you think we ought to upload separate svg files for different language versions? That way anyone could make adjustments to any map without having to retranslate the whole thing, and we wouldn't have this problem of having svg files out there which are only in a foreign script. The SVGs include both Russian and English. I suspect that in these cases, Russian was the last PNG exported, so the SVG was saved with the Russian layers shown and the English layers hidden. In Inkscape, select the Russian text, hide the layer, then show the corresponding English layer. (WT-shared) LtPowers 09:21, 23 September 2010 (EDT)
Yes, I found that English in the past version. However, some maps do not have this, such as Image:Map of Southeast Asia, which was uploaded only in Hindi. (WT-shared) Texugo 11:20, 23 September 2010 (EDT)
What do you mean by "past version"? (WT-shared) LtPowers 13:04, 23 September 2010 (EDT)

It's exactly as Lt says—the Caucasus and Benelux map SVGs both have layers for en and for ru text. Just click the plus sign next to any layers that have them, enable the ones labeled "en" and disable those labeled "ru" (you are using Inkscape, right?).

I would highly encourage you to add pt sublayers, as recommended by the en:Project:Regions Map Expedition, rather than create a separate SVG, as this creates a ton of duplication of work if we ever want to amend the maps. We can just amend the one SVG and re-export the language specific PNGs from that one file, instead of having to make the exact same amendments to each language version's SVG. --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 14:43, 23 September 2010 (EDT)

Oh, and I'm not sure about the Hindi map? I haven't personally created any Hindi layers for any maps, as Devanāgarī is Greek to me! (Err, wait, I understand the Greek alphabet, but whatever.) --(WT-shared) Peter Talk 14:45, 23 September 2010 (EDT)
Oh. Yeah. I was being silly. Forgot all about the existence of layers that turn on/off. Please disregard. (WT-shared) Texugo 03:11, 25 September 2010 (EDT)
