Hampi Road distance from Bangalore[edit]

Hi Ravi The distance between bangalore and hapi is 350km. I have updated the rout but have left the distance unchanged.

Machan[edit]

That was an inspired guess, but machan was not a misspelling for machine. It is a sort of elevated platform made of wood where people can sit to catch views of wildlife. --Ravikiran 06:29, 17 Jan 2006 (EST)

...though obviously not inspired enough. Thanks for enlightening me, and also for amending my error. However, do you think that we should actually change machan to 'elevated platform' so that ignoramouses like me will understand the meaning and not change it again. I'll leave the decision in your capable hands. (WT-en) WindHorse 17 Jan 06

I have added an explanation for Machan in the article. The reader will know what is being talked of and would have learnt something new --Ravikiran 13:17, 17 Jan 2006 (EST)

Good idea. I also now know what a machan is, and will never confuse it with a 'machine' again! (WT-en) WindHorse 18 Jan 06

Template:ISBN[edit]

I created Template:ISBN before I realized that Mediawiki has this built in -- just enter ISBN 4398201041 (no markup of any kind needed) for an automatic ISBN-link. (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:34, 22 Jan 2006 (EST)

Admin nomination[edit]

Would you be OK with me listing you for an admin nomination on Project:Administrator nominations? You've been doing great work around here and seem to me to be an excellent candidate. -- (WT-en) Ryan 16:22, 23 February 2006 (EST)

Thanks. I'd be honoured to be vested with the delete button --(WT-en) Ravikiran 19:35, 23 February 2006 (EST)
Done. While being vested with the delete button is nice, the ability to rollback is what makes life easier ;-) -- (WT-en) Ryan 20:01, 23 February 2006 (EST)
Ah yes.. The rollback button! I was trying to remember which other superpower I get from being an admin.. --(WT-en) Ravikiran 08:17, 24 February 2006 (EST)

Jersey[edit]

Have a good time in New Jersey. It's not the best time to be at the shore, but it can be awfully pretty at Sandy Hook (say) on a winter's day. --(WT-en) Evan 21:56, 23 February 2006 (EST)

Thanks for the tip. Sandy Hook does seem to offer a lot more than nude beaches :) --(WT-en) Ravikiran 08:30, 24 February 2006 (EST)

Karnataka[edit]

Thanks for doing the tedious work of templating and arranging all of Karnataka's districts! --Ravikiran

You are very welcome. Karnataka is one of only a few states that I know well enough to be able to contribute a little. I look forward to seeing the templates fill up. (WT-en) WindHorse 1 March 06

Insiders Choice Mumbai - Why did you delete it?[edit]

Why did yuou delete my insider's choice in Mumbai. It is a much needed section in all Wikivoyage location guides as without it, Wikivoyage does not have an opinion. And it is a MUST for an effective travel guide to have an opinion, rather than just listing of information. The best travel guides always provide an insider's choice section and it is much required throughout Wikitavel. RYK

I did not delete the information, but just moved it to the right places. Only repeats were deleted. Please note that Wikivoyage is not meant to be just a listing of information, but a consensus of travellers' opinions on what's good and what should be enjoyed in the city. In that sense, the whole of Wikivoyage is an "Insiders Choice". Having yet another insiders' section seems redundant to me. The right place to mention that Indigo is good, for example, is under the listing for indigo (but not in first person please!) If the information becomes too much, we would actually prefer to take off the crappier ones, or split the article into district pages. You'll notice that we have already started this for Bombay. We have Bombay/South Bombay which is just waiting to be filled out. So Plunge forward!.
Also, we rather insist on having common template sections across articles, so if you think Wikivoyage should have another section, the right place is to propose it on Wikivoyage Talk:Article Templates.
Finally, thanks for your contributions. I really don't want to bog down people in bureaucratic details about templates and stuff. So please continue to add information. --(WT-en) Ravikiran 21:57, 11 March 2006 (EST)

How to delete[edit]

Hey -- the deletion procedures aren't real well documented, so here are some things to look out for:

  1. With both images and articles, first verify that nothing still links to them. For articles, use the "What links here" link in the left nav. For images, there's a section at the bottom of the image page.
  2. To delete an article, use the "delete" tab at the top of the page. If there is a talk page that can also be deleted.
  3. To delete an image, use the "Delete all revisions" link next to the image upload date. If you don't see that link, purge the image page from the cache using the "History" tab, and change the action value in the URL to "purge".

Hope that helps -- let me know if you have any problems. -- (WT-en) Ryan 20:24, 12 March 2006 (EST)

Message notification[edit]

I'm checking to see if your notification flag gets set at all. --(WT-en) Evan 01:26, 13 March 2006 (EST)

OK, it looks like it should get set. Let me know if you see the blinker. --(WT-en) Evan 01:26, 13 March 2006 (EST)
You know I suggested that it might be the display driver on Evan's talk page, but I wonder if it has something to do with the format of your name with the space in it, or something like that. Have you tried your ip address or a different accout? That would eliminate the name format as an issue. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 07:40, 13 March 2006 (EST)
A couple of things: first, if you have Javascript turned off, or some sort of Javascript blocker, then it's not going to work.
Another point to remember: new message indicators only get set if someone else edits your talk page. Editing your own talk page shouldn't do it.
Lastly, try this experiment: log out of Wikivoyage. Edit User talk:(WT-en) Ravikiran r. Check to see that [snip] exists. Then, log in. Before going back to your talk page, check the existence of that GIF file again. Now, go to your talk page. And, as a last step, check for the file again. Let me know the results. --(WT-en) Evan 10:41, 13 March 2006 (EST)
test once again still more

I am puzzled. Why did you start as a VFD right away? —Ravikiran 11:00, 9 April 2006 (EDT)

Hi Ravikiran, sir. I checked Wikipedia, [1] and apparently the 'Impenetrable Forest' is just part of the greater Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and that was what I renamed the article. Anyway, I leave the decision regarding what to do with this article in your capable hands. (WT-en) WindHorse 9 April 06 Ps. Thanks for your help with the Kalahasti article - much appreciated.

Thanks[edit]

This is for the incredible number of new articles you've been creating for so many destinations around the world! — Ravikiran 11:30, 18 April 2006 (EDT)

Thanks for your kind thought. Actually, I really don't do that much. Just every now and again, I spend about twenty to thirty minutes on the web site, during which time I consentrate on doing a lot of cut and paste for one specific region. I think that it is important to get the templates set up as that encourages casual visitors to add info. However, unfortunately, from the end of this month until October, I probably won't have much opportunity to work on Wikivoyage, and possibility no opportunity at all from October until the end of the year - though my schedule is not confirmed yet.

P.S. I hope you don't mind my asking - are all these actually places you visit?

Besides the ones in Africa, yes mostly I have visited the places that I have edited - though many in the distant past.

P.P.S. Is your nick a reference to the Buddha?

No, Windhorse is the name given to the colorful prayer flags that are hung in Himalayan areas. They are said to create positive energy. Many tourist offices and book shops in Ladakh, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan are called Windhorse. If you are interested to read more about the meaning behind the name, maybe you'd like to check out this simple explantion: [2]

Be well, my friend. (WT-en) WindHorse 19 April 06

External Links[edit]

Was wondering what's the scope of adding external link. How else will Wikivoyage grow? Don't mind, but I feel currently topics are dependent upon certain individuals. Please make the situation clearer. rgds Aseem

Ko Phai[edit]

I threw in a template to Ko Phai as you had asked User talk:(WV-en) Sapphire and a vague isIn tag. I found this island on the Pattaya article and in an attempt to help organize the article I created Ko Phai. I was unable to find it on a map, but I'll go back and search for it again in the next couple of days. Cheers. - (WT-en) Sapphire 16:38, 7 May 2006 (EDT)

Villach[edit]

Is there a special reason for marking the article about Villach as outline ? The articles covers sights, places to eat, places to stay, states how to get there and how to get out. What exactly does the artice miss ? (WT-en) Kaykay 11:55, 28 May 2006 (EDT)

Middletown, PA[edit]

Thanks for moving that. I was unable to for a short while. - (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 14:45, 6 June 2006 (EDT)

Template:Imagecredit[edit]

I saw that you created this template on shared. How exactly does one use it? Is it type: {{imagecredit}}. Save the article, then edit the boxes? - (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 07:41, 9 June 2006 (EDT) P.S. Thanks for reverting the last article I didn't get. - (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 07:42, 9 June 2006 (EDT)

Shared deletion[edit]

Thanks for deleting the image Todd couldn't, could you also delete this version Image:Exsistingbiketrail.JPG? I misspelled the the file name, and it's an exact duplicate of the one you already deleted. Thanks. - (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 02:17, 15 June 2006 (EDT)

By Helicopter[edit]

I just added some of the information regarding helicopter flights. Therefore I had to delete a bit of the first sentence or everything would have been repeated 3 times...

Note[edit]

Don't forget to add a note to Project:User ban nominations about why you did a block. They're so rare it's worth noting and discussing. -- (WT-en) Colin 11:54, 28 June 2006 (EDT)

Bombay[edit]

I was just watching a documentary on the Bali blasts and thinking how senseless it all is... and now this. Sigh. (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:46, 11 July 2006 (EDT)

Main page[edit]

Hi! I just wanted to revert the changes by User:(WT-en) Cdcd that is quite similiar to User cdcdcd that changed the frontpage already before. (WT-en) Jan 06:27, 13 July 2006 (EDT)

Congratulations[edit]

Congrats on getting... non-attributed, I guess. Are you going to contact Hindustan Times about it? - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 09:24, 16 July 2006 (EDT)

Congrats on the creating an image that proved so great a newspaper broke the law to use it! :) How did you find out that they used the image? Did you happen to walk by the news stand and see your photo? -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 10:18, 16 July 2006 (EDT)
Quaint as the practice might seem to you, I actually subscribe to the paper edition of the newspaper and have it delivered to my doorstep. I have written to them. Let's see what they do. (My guess: Nothing.) — (WT-en) Ravikiran 13:18, 16 July 2006 (EDT)
I do that too (but with a local paper, not Hindustan Times... I know: horribly provincial of me). I can't imagine how it would feel opening it up and seeing a photo I'd taken, without so much as a credit. (It was weird enough seeing something of mine when I knew they were going to publish it.) - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 13:46, 16 July 2006 (EDT)

How long of a drive was Sidney from Dayton? -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 13:28, 1 August 2006 (EDT)

Around 45 minutes. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 13:34, 1 August 2006 (EDT)

Cool! Thanks![edit]

That's awesome! How did you find it? Did you use the Google thing Jani uses? I emailed Gary, the reporter Tuesday and gave him a whole slew of information on Wikivoyage. During the interview I kind of realized the reason I don't have a life is because of Wikivoyage. Thanks for the heads up! -- (WT-en) Sapphire 15:02, 10 August 2006 (EDT)

Should these be speedy deletes (rather than reverts) - ?[edit]

I wanted to keep the first one just long enough to inform other admins about that "announcement". I've deleted it, and the other talk page too. I've kept your talk page, as it now contains real content. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 14:49, 14 August 2006 (EDT)

IE skin[edit]

You're using IE 6, right? IE 7 seems to resolve that issue, but it completely screws up if you look at The Review site. Could you tell me what the Review site looks like in IE 6? -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 03:54, 18 August 2006 (EDT)

Redirect Main Page/ ?[edit]

Can we redirect this page to Main Page so it doesn't show in the Dead-end pages and Orphaned pages? Does that defeat the purpose or make it worse? Thanks. (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 06:35, 20 August 2006 (EDT)

Links[edit]

Thanks for the response. I think, there should be some system in Wikivoyage Shared where one can see links to the pix in different languages. That would encouarge people to put in pix. Is it technically very difficult? -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 00:12, 3 September 2006 (EDT)

That's a good idea. I don't think it would be very difficult. I have put a request. Let's see. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 01:41, 3 September 2006 (EDT)

Impressive answer[edit]

That was an impressive answer you gave to LA2. Want to take a stab at this one? -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 14:22, 6 September 2006 (EDT)

Sticking around?[edit]

Will you be sticking around for a bit to help out? -- (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 01:41, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

Let me know if you get a little blinky[edit]

So, at long last, I figured out what the problem is with message notifications and your name. It was really obvious -- the space was being translated into a "+", not a "_" -- but it took me a long time to get to it. Let me know if this worked for you -- I've tested it on a couple of other accounts and it seems to be working fine now. --(WT-en) Evan 11:52, 28 September 2006 (EDT)

Name change[edit]

Hi Ravikiran, sir - there is a discussion in progress on the Calcutta Talk page. Take a look and see what you think. I'll appreciate your input and trust your wise judgement. (WT-en) WindHorse 06:07, 17 October 2006 (EDT)

Infobox[edit]

I have developed an infobox for Bay of Bengal beaches and placed them on two pages - Bakkhali and Gopalpur-on-sea. Please have a look at them and let me know if it is okay. I don't find such infoboxes on other pages but it is a very helpul link. In case, it is not the practice in Wikivoyage, I'll remove them. In case, it is okay, I will put them on other relevant pages. Or can I create a template for it? I'll wait for your advice before acting further. -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 06:49, 18 October 2006 (EDT)

Technical problem[edit]

Something is technically wrong with the Jaldapara page. This happened when I was working on it but I am unable to understand the reason. Can it be rectified? -- (WT-en) P.K.Niyogi 08:25, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

bombay/mumbai[edit]

good job on the renaming! I was bored and looked at your user page and noticed that you still work in Bombay  ;) (WT-en) Cacahuate 07:36, 26 October 2006 (EDT) ~

COTW[edit]

Hi! I will be very busy working in the next weeks to cope with the year end rally. Therefore I won't be able to change the COTW on Mondays. As soon as business cools a bit, I will try to step in. Thanks, (WT-en) Jc8136 14:35, 14 November 2006 (EST)

No problem. I am in the US right now, so UTC+0 means 7 in the evening for me. I will be able to take up the task till mid-December. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 15:00, 14 November 2006 (EST)

Sidney, Ohio[edit]

My dad and I were on our way back from Toledo today when we passed Sidney. While you were in Sidney were there any activities/evens that you did or any that you knew of so that we can populate the "Do" section of that article? Also, what about sights? Thanks. -- (WT-en) Sapphire 20:03, 18 November 2006 (EST)

Not really. As far as I know, there isn't anything to see or do in Sidney. I and my colleagues kept planning to go to Dayton to see the Aviation museum there, but it was snowing the whole time and the thing never panned out. Also, on the way to Dayton, I could see a sign on the I75 which mentioned some historic area, but I don't remember now what it was. But in Sidney, no. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 01:41, 19 November 2006 (EST)

Barnstar and Dalian[edit]

Hey Ravikiran, thanks a tonne for the barnstar and putting Dalian up for star article. I'd actually completely forgotten about Dalian as I was completely focused on getting the UK maps done. Your message acted as a timely reminder, then, and made me finally get around to splitting the article into regions. I'd apreciate it if you could have a look at it and see if you think the split was warranted or not. --(WT-en) Paul. 11:16, 24 November 2006 (EST)

photo template[edit]

Namaskar Ravi Sahib... just came across the photo template that you used on this page... is that something that is usable or were you just playing around? I think it's nice and useful... (WT-en) Cacahuate 03:21, 14 December 2006 (EST)

Namasakar! I have since moved the template to shared: wts:Template:Imagecredit. Please have a look at the talk page for explanation on how to use it. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 07:02, 14 December 2006 (EST)
