Hello Szqecs! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.

If you are a Wikipedian then you may notice some differences in policies and the style of our articles. These include:

It may also be very useful for you to check out Wikivoyage:Welcome, Wikipedians. If you need help, take a look at Wikivoyage:Help, or else post a message in the travellers' pub or on my talk page. Thanks for contributing!

Thanks for your contributions to articles about Taiwan and Hong Kong. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask by replying below.

All the best,

Editing policy pages

[edit]

Hi, Szqecs.

Your participation here is appreciated, as is the discussion you started on the Wikivoyage talk:Using MediaWiki templates page. But you'll note that your proposal has engendered more opposition than support, so it's quite irregular that you unilaterally changed the wording of a policy page. That's not OK to do here, nor do I think it would be on any other Wiki. Thanks in advance for not doing that again in the future. And would you please nominate templates you'd like to use on this site? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:00, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

As far as I can tell, no one explicitly objected. My edit only removed the 'eventually get deleted' part and kept the 'should be discussed' parts. Actually, I have unilaterally changed policies on Wikipedia without trouble. Wikipedia has a 'be bold' policy. This is why Wikivoyage will never be as popular. If people like you restrict others from making changes, people stop editing. Szqecs (talk) 09:13, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
We have a similar plunge forward policy, but not for policy pages. And it's not only you who can't change policy pages unilaterally: Neither can I. Sure, anyone can tweak wording, but substantive changes need to be discussed. And I really doubt that a policy of requiring consensus for policy changes is something that's doing much to limit the number of editors here. Some of the policies themselves might, though. Anyway, you're always welcome to propose the changes you want to make, but I happen to think you'll get more done by nominating templates you want to use. Then this plunge forward policy conflicts with Wikivoyage:Using MediaWiki templates. I have already plunged forward and created templates along with talk pages saying what they do, as policy requires. Can I be assured that they won't be deleted? No, because no one commented on these templates, which, as far as I can tell, constitutes 'failing to gain community support'. Szqecs (talk) 09:44, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
If you'd like to encourage discussion, post an announcement at requests for comment, and you could call attention to it in the Travellers' pub, too, if you like. Many people may not notice that a template was created. I'll say for my part that understanding new templates isn't my forte, but there are other folks who are much better at it. I also think someone else might be more useful in addressing the deletion of templates than I, but from what I remember, they are deleted when they are either not widely used quite a while after being created, don't do much or both, or have been superseded by another template. When there's an active user who created them, they'd presumably always be given the option of moving the templates to their userspace in lieu of deletion if it came to that. But my feeling is, if the templates you want to use are really useful, people will appreciate them. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:53, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
There are lots of templates I would like to use, and it is impractical to discuss every one. What you remember about template deletion, are you going to explain it to every potential template creator? Or should we just change the 'will be deleted' part of the policy? It seems to me that 'will be evaluated' is more appropriate. Or we can just remove that sentence and make it an implicit policy rather than an explicit one. I'm not unilaterally in charge of anything here. Please post this suggestion at Wikivoyage talk:Using MediaWiki templates, so that a wider selection of Wikivoyagers can discuss it. I'd recommend posting it under a different title, and you can link this discussion if you like. You can also post a pointer at requests for comment, or perhaps I can do that within the next couple of days. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:32, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
