Västerdalarna is the western part of Dalarna, at the border to Norway. The region contains the tallest mountains of the province, and is less populated than Siljansbygden and Dalabergslagen.
The coldest and most mountainous part of Svealand, this is a region for outdoor life and winter sport not too far from the more populated regions of southern Sweden.

[edit]The settlements in western Dalarna are few and far between. While most of the forests are used for logging, the region is great to see Eurasian fauna including bears, elks and deer.

Västerdalarna is mostly visited for outdoor life and winter sport. The region has several alpine resorts, and contains the starting points of two legs in the Swedish Classic Circuit: The Vansbro Swim in Vansbro, and Vasaloppet in Sälen.
