Momijidani Teien (Garden)
The Koshoan
  • 5 Wakayama Castle (和歌山城, Wakayama-jō) (Get off at Shiyakusho-mae bus stop). Wakayama is best known for its castle. Like many castles in Japan, this is a partial reconstruction, as it suffered bomb damage during the war. Walking around the castle is not as commercial as it would be in places like Osaka, for example, and it usually very peaceful. From inside the castle you get a good view of the city, and there are some small exhibits inside, showing some of the castle's understated history.
Within the castle grounds is a zoo, which is a very depressing experience- best avoided.
Entry into the castle: ¥400 adults, ¥200 children.
    • 6 Momijidani Teien (Garden) (紅葉渓庭園) (Get off at Shiyakusho-mae bus stop), +81-73-431-8648. 09:00 - 17:00. A refined garden in the grounds of Wakayama Castle. Walk briskly down the hill behind the tower to the north and along the lane enclosed by a white earth wall and a bluestone (chlorite schiste) wall and the rustic thatched gate will come into view. When you pass through this gate, a calm space opens up before you and you almost forget that you are in the city. Momijidani Teien (Garden) was built by Yorinobu Tokugawa for the Nishinomaru Palace. This is a garden with an almost easygoing feeling that skillfully uses the inner moat built in the time of Asano and the undulations of Mt. Torafusu. The Engyokaku (floating pavilion) that floats in the middle of the moat is exceptional on a rainy day and your heart is moved when the Tsuridono (small pavilion) floats to the surface of the water like smoke. The pond was created using the spring that comes from the base of the mountain and there is an Ofunaishi in the shape of a boat in the middle of the pond. It is pleasant to watch the Koi carp swimming around. There are many bridges with character including Momijidani Bridge and wooden bridges paved with earth and stone bridges, and the sound of the waterfall gives an indescribable feeling of comfort. It feels like your everyday fatigue just melts away. Autumn leaf viewing is a given but this can be said to be a garden rich in elegance in which you can view the atmospheric scenery of the changing of the four seasons. Free.
    • 7 The Koshoan (紅松庵) (Get off at Shiyakusho-mae bus stop). 9:00~16:30. The Momijidaniteien(Garden) in the site of Wakayama castle was one of the best among the gardens built within the walls of a castle in the early Edo period. Within the Garden is a Tea Ceremony Hut. This Hut ,along with the garden ,was donated to the city of Wakayama by the late Konosuke Matsushita , founder of Matsushita Electric Corp.,who was born in this area. The building is a copper-roofed,one-story wooden rustic style house and has a tea ceremony room with Tatami mats, one with benches, a washing-place and a storage space. The lady will serve you Macha green tea who wear kimono. You can enjoy a cup of Japanese tea even if you don’t know the manners. The view from the tea room is very beautiful throughout the year. Kimii-dera (Temple) is famous for early-flowering cherry blossoms and it is also the second temple where amulets can be obtained in west Japan and pilgrims in pilgrim dress can be seen visiting with their walking sticks and an earnest look in their eyes. The name comes from its three wells: Kisshosui, Yoryusui and Shojosui. As you pass through the tower gate, your view is dominated by the 231 steps and you stand taken aback for a moment. However, you think the harder it is, the greater the joy at the achievement and as you being to climb the hill step by step just for the sake of it, you feel each cell in your body coming alive. When you are taking a breather after having finished the climb, you look back and see a wide view of the beautiful Wakanoura Bay which musters up the emotions of a traveller. This temple was opened in the first year of the Hoki Era (770) by the Chinese monk and holy priest, Iko. As it is in fairly close proximity to Wakayama Castle, successive lords visited Kimii-dera (Temple) and it was here that the Kishu house of Tokugawa prayed for prosperity. The main hall was newly constructed in the Horeki Years (1751 - 1764). In this main hall lies the two-storied pagoda that 10th lord Harutomi donated. At the side entrance to the main hall in the secret hall, there are many exhibits such as a hanging scroll written by Harutomi himself and the plaque of Kazunao Ikkyu as well as a picture map of the Kansai Kannon Pilgrimage. • 16 Mt. Akiba (秋葉山). According to the ‘Nobunagakoki ’, the biography of Nobunaga Oda, in 1570, the people of Saika, who supported the Osaka Honganji Temple, were no longer able to evade the invasion of Nobunaga’s Armies. On February 22, 1577, Nobunaga’s Armies entered into battle against the people of Saika in the Saika area of Kishu Provence. On February 22nd of the same year, Nobunaga took the famous commanders Nobumori Sakuma, Hideyoshi Hashiba, and Murashige Araki, with him and attacked the people of Saika, who had barricaded themselves on Mt. Akiba. This small mountain only rises 73 meters above sea level, but being surrounded by mountains on 3 sides and the abundant waters of the Wakagawa River on the east made it a valuable strongpoint. The people of Saika palisaded the bank of river and placed pots in the riverbed to trip up the advancing horses and soldiers to prepare for the attack. Hidemasa Hori’s cavalry, the advancing guard of the attacking army stormed into the river, but lost their footing and became unable to move. Subsequently, they were easily picked off by their opponent’s rifles. They lost many of their warriors and ultimately retreated. While the people of Saika did not necessarily win the battle, but on March 21st political instabilities in Kyoto forced Nobunaga withdraw from Saika and return to Azuchi Castle. The people of Saika were so filled with joy when they saw Nobunaga’s retreating army that they danced in celebration, in spite of their war wounded legs. This is said to be the birth of the Saika-odori style of dancing. Saika-odori dancing is still performed today as a part of the Wakamatsuri festival which is regularly held at the Kishu Toshogu.
  • 17 Furobashi (Bridge) (不老橋) (Right beside Furobashi bus stop). This bridge, at the time of the Waka Festival which was a Toshogu festival that honoured Ieyasu Tokugawa, was built on the Onarimichi which was a path that the Tokugawa clan and people connected to Toshogu used in order to get to the lodge. The arch portion of the abutments are thought to have been constructed by the Higo Kumamoto masons group and the railing portion is estimated to be the product of Ishiya Chubei masons from Yuasa. There is a relief pattern of clouds on the railings. Edo Period arched stone bridges are extremely rare outside of Kyushu and, in particular, the railing portion carvings are excellent.
  • 18 Kankaikaku (観海閣) (Bus 2 minutes' walk from Tamatsushima Shrine bus stop). If you stride across the blue stone of the Sandanbashi Bridge, you come to the small island of Imoseyama. If you turn around, the Kankaikaku appears floating on the sea and you feel as if you would be able to write a whole volume of poems in this place. This Kankaikaku was built as a wooden pavilion on top of the water by Yorinobu in the Keian years (1648 – 1652) and it faces Kimiidera on the other coast. (The original structure was washed away in the 2nd Murodo Typhoon in 1961. The current building is a concrete re-construction.) The reflection of Mt. Nagusa ripples in the wind in the mirror-like surface of the water and looks like it could disappear at any moment. • 11 Sekiguchi Shin Shin-ryū (関口新心流), 1-20 Shimabashihigashinocho, +81-73-455-7021, . The founder of Sekiguchi ryu was Sekiguchi Yarokuemon Ujimune, also known as Sekiguchi Jushin. Jushin was part of the famous Seiwa Genji Imagawa family of the Sengoku Period. When the once powerful Imagawa family fell to the conquests of Oda Nobunaga, Jushin decided to dedicate his life to martial arts training. He left the castle for the Atago Mountains where he underwent intense physical and spiritual training. The result of that training became known as Sekiguchi ShinShin Ryu, and rumors of the wanderer and of his art rang throughout the country. Tokugawa Yorinobu, head of the Kishu Han (modern day Wakayama Prefecture) had heard about Jushin and after meeting him Jushin was asked to be a permanent guest of the Han at Wakayama castle and teach Sekiguchi-ryū. From there the art spread all the way to Edo Tokugawa where the 8th Tokugawa Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, became a menkyo kaiden of Sekiguchi Ryu. During World War II many of the ryu's documents containing history and techniques were lost in fires from Allied bombing. After a 15-year pause in training, Yoshitaro, the 12th Sōke, with the help of head student Fujimura Shigeru restored the art and passed it on to the present soke, 13th generation, Sekiguchi Yoshio.

Pachinko / Pachislo

Wakayama is most often pachinko machines and pachislo machines in at Kinki. It is a type of mechanical game originating in Japan and is used as both a form of recreational arcade game and much more frequently as a gambling device, filling a Japanese gambling niche comparable to that of the slot machine in Western gaming. A pachinko machine resembles a vertical pinball machine, but has no flippers and uses a large number of small balls. The player fires balls into the machine, which then cascade down through a dense forest of pins. If the balls go into certain locations, they may be captured and sequences of events may be triggered that result in more balls being released. The object of the game is to capture as many balls as possible. These balls can then be exchanged for prizes. Pachinko machines were originally strictly mechanical, but modern ones have incorporated extensive electronics, becoming similar to video slot machines. Pachinko parlors are widespread in Japan, and they usually also feature a number of slot machines (called pachislo or pachislots); hence, these venues operate and look similar to casinos. Modern pachinko machines are highly customizable, keeping enthusiasts continuously entertained.

Diner

Drink

There are some atmospheric izakayas here but nothing special. Arochi has the token seedy area, which has a lot of hostess bars and other expensive vices.

Sleep

There are a few small hotels in Wakayama, none of which are really used to dealing with tourists. The most easy to spot is the monstrous Daiwa Roynet, which towers above the city near Wakayama Castle. Nearby, in Burakuricho, there is a new business hotel, and there is the Granvia hotel, a rather exclusive and expensive hotel near JR station.

Perhaps one of the best features of Wakayama is that it is well connected, and provides good access to Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and so on without being on top of them. Wakayama is a smaller city which seemingly makes little effort to embrace tourism, so is a good example of a "normal" Japanese place untouched by the demons of tourism.

The South of Wakayama prefecture is one of Japan's playgrounds, and its well known resort of Shirahama is busy during the summer season. Mount Koya, the atmospheric and picturesque mountain an hour from Wakayama, is a little-known (by tourists) gem.
