By train[edit]

A train line runs around the southern coastline. Other train services are sparse.

Kumano Hongu Shrine

Shirahama beach is crowded with tourists every summer. The water is clear and there are lots of hotels near the beach.

The three shrines of Kumano Kodo, namely Kumano-Hayatama, Kumano-Nachi and Kumano-Hongu (formerly Kumano-Niimasu), have been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Scuba posting

An underwater mailbox (すさみ海中郵便ポスト Susami Kaichu Yubin-Posto) can be found at a depth of 10 meters off the coast of Susami, Wakayama, and is certified as the "World's deepest mailbox" in the Guinness Book of World Records 2002. Special plastic postcards (¥150 domestic, ¥350 international) are available, and divers mail nearly 200 items daily in the summer peak season. The mailbox is open from April to September.

Go next[edit]

  • Ise - small town in Mie prefecture with its famous shrines, can be reached by train.

This region travel guide to Wakayama is an outline and may need more content. It has a template, but there is not enough information present. If there are Cities and Other destinations listed, they may not all be at usable status or there may not be a valid regional structure and a "Get in" section describing all of the typical ways to get here. Please plunge forward and help it grow!
