The purpose of a topic ban is to forbid editors from making edits related to a certain topic area where their contributions have been disruptive, but to allow them to edit the rest of Wikivoyage. Unless clearly and unambiguously specified otherwise, a topic ban covers all pages (not only articles) broadly related to the topic, as well as the parts of other pages that are related to the topic.

In general, the user is allowed to ask questions on their own user talk page, or at Wikivoyage talk:Topic bans, in order to clarify the scope of the ban, but if this exception is abused, it may be revoked.

A topic ban may only be imposed following a discussion with consensus at Wikivoyage:User ban nominations. Topic bans may be temporary or indefinite.

Example

[edit]

If an editor is banned from the topic "scuba diving", this editor is not only forbidden from editing the article Scuba diving, but also everything else that has to do with scuba diving, such as:

  • Scuba diving-related articles, and their talk pages;
  • Scuba diving-related parts of other pages, even if the pages as a whole have little or nothing to do with scuba diving;
  • Discussions or suggestions about scuba diving-related topics anywhere on Wikivoyage, for instance a deletion discussion concerning an article about scuba diving, but also including edit summaries and the user's own user and talk pages (including sandboxes).

If the editor is uncertain whether they're allowed to edit an article about snorkeling, marine life, or some other related topic, they are free to ask a question narrowly focused on the scope of the ban, at their user talk page or Wikivoyage talk:Topic bans. But if they ask questions repeatedly or in a disruptive manner, they may be viewed as being in breach of the ban.

Enforcement

[edit]

Once a topic ban has been imposed by the community, the editor is expected to follow it. If they still find themselves unable to resist making edits in the restricted topic area, the ban may be enforced with a partial block or, as a last resort, with escalating user blocks.
