Purpose

[edit]

howdy. I was wondering what the goal of this page is and how it differs from the Project:Help page. Is it just another index? Should it be both wiki-utils like talk, edit, etc and wikivoyage specific issues like article templates and style? Just want to be sure I'm adding the right stuff... thanks (WT-en) Majnoona

It seems like it could be useful for people who know what they're looking for, but don't know exactly how to find it. It's probably a good idea. -- (WT-en) Evan 21:59, 8 Aug 2003 (PDT)

Article name

[edit]

Would anyone object to moving this page to Project:Namespace index? The current name makes me think of tools to use with Wikivoyage (ie Project:Software tools) instead of a list of all pages within the Wikivoyage namespace. -- (WT-en) Wrh2 15:22, 24 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Hello? Anyone have any objections or alternate suggestions? Otherwise I'll go ahead and make the move. -- (WT-en) Ryan 02:03, 6 Oct 2005 (EDT)
Done. -- (WT-en) Ryan 02:19, 14 Oct 2005 (EDT)
What do you call it when you agree with an idea so much that you don't even bother to say, "I agree"? Anyways, this was a good idea. Thanks for taking the initiative and doing it. --(WT-en) Evan 11:00, 14 Oct 2005 (EDT)
Cool. It's always a tough call around here whether something isn't getting comment due to lack of objection, or due to the fact that no one noticed the question. Usually, however, actually diving in and making a change causes those in the second group to sit bolt upright and take notice. Glad to hear that in this case the peanut gallery mostly consisted of group #1. -- (WT-en) Wrh2 13:09, 14 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Wow! I didn't even know this page existed! This is pretty cool... -- (WT-en) Ilkirk 13:54, 14 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Organizational hierarchy

[edit]

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to better organize this page? The original page was simply in alphabetical order, so I made an attempt to break up the new page, but it could still use a lot of work to make it more useful. Please go ahead and add any new headings and move anything around if you feel it will help. -- (WT-en) Ryan 14:51, 21 March 2006 (EST)

Replace this page with categories?

[edit]

This page has always been kind of a mess, and it's proven difficult to maintain over time. It's still a useful list, but it would be nicer if we had a more automated way of creating it. Project:Categories have proven useful on Wikivoyage Shared, so perhaps the organization of the "Wikivoyage:" namespace (and ONLY the "Wikivoyage:" namespace) could be handled in a similar way? A template could be used to hide the actual implementation and then we could create three simple top-levels: "introduction" (faq, goals, welcome pages), "community" (policies not related to editing) and "content" (policies related to editing). Thoughts? Evan, is there another way this could be handled since you don't like categories? -- (WT-en) Ryan 14:05, 9 June 2006 (EDT)

Well, we already have Project:Help, Project:Policies and guidelines, and Project:Manual of style. I'm not sure what categories give us here. --(WT-en) Evan 20:19, 9 June 2006 (EDT)
Looking at the list of people that link to Project:Namespace index from their user pages, and noting the number of people who don't link but who have at one time or another said this page is useful, it's clear that there are a number of users who like having a page that lists all available references. The pages you mention above are the three "top-level" help pages, but you will never find (for example) Project:Spam filter from any of those pages, and other policies might take some searching.
It would be nice if there was an automated way of creating indexes so that someone interested in (for example) the spam filter could simply look through a list to find any guideline article having to do with spam. Using categories with the MediaWiki pages would accomplish that since editors would know to add an organizational template to the page, and the category page would then automatically update. We could then get rid of the Project:Namespace index page which is out-of-date and rather confusing. Granted, the category lists wouldn't replace Project:Help & friends, but would supplement them by acting as an index of the help policies. We can make it very clear that new categories should not be created without discussion (as has already been stated elsewhere) if that's a concern. -- (WT-en) Ryan 20:45, 9 June 2006 (EDT)

Country-specific mos info

[edit]

OK, I've given up looking for this. I swear we had a lengthy discussion on creating small MoS pages for specific countries, but I can't find it for the life of me. And didn't we create one of them for the U.S.? I hope this isn't dementia pugilistica or something. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:08, 21 June 2009 (EDT)
