Hello! Welcome to Wikivoyage. Glad you wandered in here.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.

If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 19:14, 11 May 2007 (EDT)

Food in Britain[edit]

"would argue that there is more variety in London supermarkets (for visitors/expats) than in Paris.)". Does the UK end at the city borders of London? Second, there might be a variety in international products in london supermarkets, especially when it comes to wine. But when it comes to ingredients UK supermarkets fail badly. Most brits tend to cook out of the microwave, which is visible by the big amount of microwave food sections in the supermarket. Then if you try to make a proper dish, from proper ingredients, you will have a hard time at your local tesco or sainsbury. Try to find seperate herbs, you have to use vaguely combined herbs such as tandoori herbs, thai herbs, sensual herbs, etc.
We should probably discuss this on the UK page. But, I've lived in the UK for a while and while I agree that London is not representative of the UK (just like New York is not representative of the rest of the US) I must say that I don't agree with your contention that the choice of ingredients is poor outside London. In many ways, thanks to the huge Asian Indian and West Indian population, there is a lot of variety in UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's. Perhaps you won't find lemongrass in Leeds, but I doubt if you'll find that outside major cities anywhere in the Western world. And, in terms of restaurants, Indian, Thai, and Chinese restaurants are far easier to find in the boondocks of the UK than in most European countries. --(WT-en) Wandering 11:31, 21 June 2007 (EDT)

Your response just show my point. International cuisine is not synonym to Indian, Thai and Chinese. Actually I believe this group of restaurents tend to settle in countries with poor food cultures. Go to Holland for example and you will find them as easy as in the UK. I am an expat in Britain and together with other expats we believe the choice of ingredients not to be rich in British Supermarkets, and I believe a warning for visitors is in place. But anyhow this discussion is going nowhere. Good luck with your aim in drawing a better image of britain.

If you strongly feel that travelers should be warned that the UK has a poorer selection of international ingredients in supermarkets, I suggest you put this discussion into the talk page for the UK. Personally, I thought that the supermarkets had a wide range of products, except real bagels of course but have you have not lived till you've tried finding bagels in Paris :-). Also, I would suggest dropping phrases like "many consider cooking to be a push on the microwave button," because it sounds negative (and is hard to prove).--(WT-en) Wandering 08:33, 25 June 2007 (EDT)

Myanmar <-> India[edit]

Still closed to foreigners six weeks ago - I suggest "it is not currently feasible to independently cross the borders between Myanmar and (India)" is an accurate summary of the current situation. ~ 60.51.204.185 11:08, 12 May 2007 (EDT)

You may be right but there is evidence of travelers having crossed independently, albeit with advance permission. My point is that the feasibility has not been adequately tested and that the infeasibility is open to question. (Plenty of discussion on this subject at thorntree.)

I modified it to make it clear that it is very hard to cross the border at Tamu.--(WT-en) Wandering 15:01, 14 May 2007 (EDT)

"While there have been confirmed reports of some travelers crossing into Myanmar from India, with their own transport" [1] - I'm interested to know more, where can I read these confirmed reports? ~ 60.52.138.153 09:37, 17 May 2007 (EDT)

[2]

[3]

(There is at least one other report of an "across asia by land" group crossing early this year. I can't find it right now but will search online later.)

Don't hold your breath about this happening anytime soon but at least there is talk about an active border crossing! See [4]--(WT-en) Wandering 17:03, 23 July 2007 (EDT)

Images[edit]

Hey there!

Thanks for all your recent edits, much appreciated.

Can you select a license for Image:Purcell Tower.jpg?

Also, if you instead upload all of your images to Wikivoyage Shared, then all language versions will be able to access them. You'll have to create a user id over there too, or you can login using OpenID. Thanks again! – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 16:18, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

Any chance I can get a quick summary of what the different licenses mean? (Thanks for the thanks!)--(WT-en) Wandering 16:40, 21 May 2007 (EDT)
As I understand it, CC-by-SA means that anyone can use your image as long as it remains free for anyone else to use (i.e., no derivative, copyrighted works), keeps it under the CC-by-SA license, and gives you credit for the image. PD means you have totally released all rights to your image forever and anyone can use it for any purpose and will not need to credit you for the work. The combination CC-by-SA + GNU FDL licenses are more confusing and I don't really recommend using them unless you have a specific reason for doing so. And as far as I can tell, it doesn't matter much which CC-by-SA version you use, but the "1.0 and up" might be the simplest. Hmm... I can't seem to find a good explanation of these policies on either shared or english wikivoyage... Anyway, hope his helps! --(WT-en) Peterfitzgerald Talk 17:06, 21 May 2007 (EDT)
It does! Thanks. --(WT-en) Wandering 19:21, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

Ideally, because this entire site is licensed as CC by SA 1.0, we'd like you to license your images as that (or as public domain). There's still some fuzziness about the newer licenses (ccbysa 2.0, 2.5, 3.0), but what seems to be the case right now is that they are compatable with our site as long as you don't select any of the extra stipulations (non-commercial, or no derivatives, for example...).

There's nothing wrong with selecting the dual license feature... GFDL is the license that Wikipedia and some other sites use - though I believe ccbysa is also compatible with their site, so it might not be necessary. However, don't license them only as GFDL, as they would then not be compatible with Wikivoyage.

Essentially, it boils down to:

  • there are 2 licenses definitely compatible with WT: ccbysa 1.0, and PD
  • images must be available for commercial usage, and to be altered and built upon (derivatives).
  • The main diff between PD and CCbySA 1.0, I think, is that with PD it can be used without crediting you.

You may also want to see Project:Image policy and Project:Copyleft for more details. Thanks! – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 20:36, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

Kolkata[edit]

Hey there Wandering Wanderer! We're slowly in the process of getting the restaurants on the main Kolkata page into the appropriate district articles... if you can figure out which ones the new places you just added belong in it would helpful to move them straight there (and see if you're familiar with any of the others too, move em also if you are). Thanks! – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 01:44, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

Sure. I'll give it a shot. I'm just another 'visited Calcutta' kind of guy so don't expect too much!--(WT-en) Wandering 14:03, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

Please don't remove undistricted restaurants/hotels/... wholesale though (even to Talk), because then they're useless. The right(tm) way is to move those you can and stick a >{{districtify}} on top above the rest, so the next Wikivoyager can move 'em. (WT-en) Jpatokal 04:42, 27 June 2007 (EDT)

Ok. I'll revert my edits for the time being and clean up along the way.--(WT-en) Wandering 16:13, 27 June 2007 (EDT)

With Children[edit]

Excellent idea! You are ahead of the pack. Seems many contributors may not have started, or are just starting the "with children" thing. Mine is "with grandchildren", meaning mine are out of the nest. It does change things, and how you plan things. At my age "altitude", is a big thing, but the youngans have not yet figured that out. My trip in late 2005 to Mexico City, Morelia and Michoacan, with my 14 year old Grandson was full of surprises, but fun and worth everything. (WT-en) 2old 15:27, 25 July 2007 (EDT)

Thanks! With children is an oft asked question on Thorntree and I figured it would be a great way to make wikivoyage 'more complete' than other travel books. Typically one has to buy a separate with children book when traveling with the tots. There's a discussion going in the travelers pub on this topic that you might want to add to.--(WT-en) Wandering 16:43, 25 July 2007 (EDT)

Electricity in Manhattan[edit]

I am very curious about this edit... What do you mean with technically correct? And why elevators? --(WT-en) Flip666 writeme! • 16:59, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

There is 220 Volt electricity in Manhattan and some old apartment buildings have 220V and 110V lines (one AC in my apartment runs on 220 Volts). A relic from late 19th and early 20th centuries when electricity was new and the 110 norm had not been set. Often, elevators in very old buildings are run on 220V if they haven't been upgraded. (My comment was a bit, um, flip!) A tourist is very very unlikely to encounter 220V because there are few, if any, buildings in Manhattan that have only 220V.--(WT-en) Wandering 18:42, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
Crazy... So now if I ever have to design an elevator for Manhattan I have an advantage in information! :-) --(WT-en) Flip666 writeme! • 19:04, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

The war against the spambots[edit]

Thanks for the help with the latest round. I've added one of the offending sites to the blacklist, so this batch should stop ... until the idiots perpetrating it make a counter-move ... -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 20:18, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

Speedy deletes[edit]

There are criteria for articles that can be deleted without going through the whole VfD process. That one qualified under the "name" criterion identified in the link, so I speedy-deleted it; thanks for pointing it out. On the one hand, we don't do speedy deletes very often, although I'm chagrined to say we've been doing it a lot more in the last six months or so than previously. OTOH, the appeal process cited in the link has only been used once, in my experience (and I was the one making the appeal, which I believe was sustained), so it's not like the power is being abused. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 19:42, 5 November 2007 (EST)

Thanks for catching those other two. It's 100% proper to bring them to the attention of an admin, whether me or any other; that's what we're here for. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 20:09, 6 November 2007 (EST)

Admin nomination[edit]

Please check out Project:Administrator nominations and let us know if you're willing to accept. -- (WT-en) Colin 20:40, 28 November 2007 (EST)

Messy revert[edit]

Germany/Racism[edit]

Sorry, that edit summary was a quick no-thinker—I've got that page shortlisted for fast reverts, per the vfd discussion. But regarding your edit, I'm pretty sure that we're not supposed to tinker with archived vfd discussions once they've been moved off the vfd page. Of course, you could always re-open the vfd by moving it back to the vfd page and adding the tag. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:29, 15 December 2007 (EST)

I haven't been for a few years but it is well worth the trip. I used to work on 49th and 7th and we would stroll down for lunch during the festival (at least a couple of days, if I remember correctly). Amazing variety of food from Greek to American and Thai to Sri Lankan. It is easy to walk along and nibble at appetizers priced at $1 to $2. Buddah[edit]

Was he the one that said "Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one." He may have used a different part of the anatomy, I am not sure. I am sure WTP is very important to some, you and I need to make sure that their interests never overide the interests of Wikivoyage.com. They seem to operate under the "Winning through superior fire power" method of operation (which I am quite familiar with). While I see both sides of the debate, one should error to the safest position, which personally, I do not think has been done. This is a very young project and the goals seem to be different from one person to another. When a problem like this comes up, at least the brakes should be put on and preventative measures applied. The Contributors/Administators/Bureaucrats appear to have limited ability to install/delete/fix some problems and IB seems distant from the problems. I think it best to rise above the storm and move on with any improvements we can make to the project. Issues like that with the license of photo's, will work itself out at some point in the future. My main objection at this point, is that Maj and Evan are no longer participating, although they are in more of a position to profit from the contributions of others than anyone other than IB. Maybe they have a reason, that I do not see, and although I seem to be judging them, it is not with prejudice. I still appreciate their founding of this project and I think it will be valuable to many in the future. I sincerely appreciate your contibutions/comments and I hope you continue without personal restriction. (WT-en) 2old 14:37, 19 February 2008 (EST)

WTP[edit]

I think wikivoyage is a great idea and will do fine with or without you me and dupree (jpatokal). I have to disagree with this sort of mentality. Without you me and dupree, there would be no wikivoyage. This sort of attitude usually goes away with maturity. As the contibutors and the site mature, both will improve. We seem to be dealing with some very intelligent and well educated contibutors. The abuse of well meaning contributors is inexcusable, but we have no wikipolice to send after them. I suggest you ignore such comments just as you would a visitors adolescent child. On the subject of WTP, I have no problem with that and I hope they make lots of money, especially the founders, but I guess it is fine for those who also do an excellent job on Cities they wish to have printed. I also question the lack of other ads, but I guess it really is not my business. I would prefer ads to a very slow site, that seems to be getting slower with each contribution. My guess is that IB is waiting until they have a very good product beore selling it. Wikivoyage outshines the rest of the travel sites incluing Route66. (WT-en) 2old 12:23, 20 February 2008 (EST)

What a jerk[edit]

Sorry about putting the above on your user page. Like I said, I am a great example of the Peter Principle at times. I do not know if you know of the previous conversation about this but: In an email conversation with IB during the server crisis, I got this response from the IB General Manager> Hi again, Mike!

Now that we have the right-side space available, I'm not opposed to some non-profit support if consensus within the Wikivoyage community can be achieved on what organization(s) to support.

Page on Dindigul district in Tamilnadu - Home of Kodai hills, Palani temple etc[edit]

Hi I am K Bala - I saw that you have edited the page on wikivoyage main page on Tamilnadu. I would like to contribute to Wiki travel - Actually I would like to create a page on Dindigul district which is home to Kodai hills resort and Palani temple - Besides these, there are other historical temples and forts in this district. Can I create a page for this please. Pls let me know. (WT-en) Kbala1055 22:36, 23 October 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for the prompt reply. As you would have noticed, I am a beginner. Actually I started out creating the page. I have travelled many times in this area and thought that there are many other areas/places of interest other than Kodai and Palani that are anyway separate pages in wikivoyage and often visited. I have some info about this area but not to the extent required by wikivoyage. But hope it grows as I try to find out more. To divide the Tamilnadu region into sub-regions requires a good knowledge of this state and honestly I do not know if I possess that.. We can give it a shot after I complete the Dindigul page. Will ask you if I have some doubts pop up (WT-en) Kbala1055 08:19, 26 October 2008 (EDT)

Sorry for such a delayed response. Thanks for reorganising my first wiki page. Actually the headquarters of Dindigul district is the Dindigul city. To refer Batlagundu as a city may be a little incorrect-Batlagundu qualifies as a town as the reference in wikipedia enumerates. Can I go ahead and make "section" entries for cities and towns in this page. Please let me know (WT-en) Kbala1055 11:03, 2 November 2008 (EST)

Thanks for the response. Will make the section Cities and towns. Will add an entry for dindigul City and change Batlagundu to a town... Thanks (WT-en) Kbala1055 20:24, 4 November 2008 (EST)

Sorry for the late response--- was a bit held up in many things.. Madurai and Trichy are districts themselves with the district headquarters as Madurai city and Trichy city. Madurai is 60 kms from Dindigul and Trichy is also 60-75 kms from Dindigul. Actually I would like to upload a map from google - Is it permitted in wikivoyage? Otherwise I have drawn a sketch with my own knowledge although not to scale. .. pls let me know (WT-en) Kbala1055 04:02, 16 November 2008 (EST)

That was off by 50 kms. Actually, Trichy is approximately 100-120 kms away from Dindigul. 21:28, 16 November 2008 (EST)

Harsh words[edit]

Sorry for that! I had thought that your restoring the discussion seemed kind of aggressive, and irritation at that came out in my response today. As is most often the case, a needless conflict based on mutual misunderstanding. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 21:48, 10 March 2009 (EDT)

Every image on wikivoyage-old.org (wts.wikivoyage-old.org, shared.wikivoyage-old.org, and en.wikivoyage-old.org) needs to be tagged with one of five templates: NowCommons, Move, Replace, KeepLocal, or Ignore. Pathein[edit]

I seem to remember you are interested in Myanmar/Burma, if not, pardon the intrusion but this seems very odd. Every single IP in Pathein is blocked on the English wikipedia; [6] [7] [8] there last three are internet cafes, probably best not to say which ones, considering.... also the accommodations, overlapping with some internet cafes and coffeeshops: [9] [10] The last is also the only IP for the beach towns to the west: Ngwe Saung I believe has computer access, very slow, via generator, from 6 pm to about 11 pm. Not sure how far these blocks extend, and how many are range blocks, but it seems like Myanmar doesn't have all that many IPs to begin with. I'm not the right person to try to figure out what's going on here but it seems very strange. At this rate Myanmar soon won't have any places left that aren't blocked. Just sayin'.

Thanks for the note. Looks like they're blocked as proxies and socks so I've left a note on the talk pages of the blocking editors. Hopefully they can figure things out. --RegentsPark (talk) 20:12, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
