Kehl is a city in the Ortenau region of Germany west of the Black Forest.
Understand
Kehl is the German half of the metropolitan region centred on the French city of Strasbourg. The two cities are divided by the River Rhine, but connected by a pedestrian bridge, and by road, rail and tram links.
The city is in the mouth of the Baden Rhine valley, a few kilometers from the confluence of the Kinzig into the Rhine
- 1 Kork. picturesque suburb, formerly an independent town, has several historic buildings, and its own railway station.
Get in
For long distance travel, see Strasbourg.
By train
Besides trains to Strasbourg there are also train stations in Kehl, and Kork, as well, with services from Strasbourg and Offenburg.
By tram
The Strasbourg tram system has one cross-border line since 2017. Despite crossing an international border (a line of the Basel tramway has a similar distinction), both sides are within the Schengen Area, so you don't need to take a passport or answer the question "business or pleasure" and you'll likely not be asked by customs agents how much booze you are carrying, either (and the limits are very generous at any rate). There are of course fare inspectors, so don't forget to get a ticket.
