Asia > South Asia > India > Southern India > Kerala > Malabar > Kasaragod District > Manjeshwar

Manjeshwar is in Malabar, in Kerala, India.

The Karnataka border at Anekallu
Miyapadavu near Hosangadi

Understand

[edit]

Even though Manjeshwar is officially in Kerala, most people belong to Karnataka and speak Kannada and Tulu languages as the Karnataka border is only a few kilometres away.

There are two towns in Manjeshwar. The old Manjeshwar is on the western side of the railway station. Most of the old temples and mosques are on this side near the beach. The new Manjeshwar is on the national highway on the eastern side of the railway station. New establishments and eateries are appearing every day on this side of Manjeshwar.

Get in

[edit]

Buses are available from Mangalore and Kozhikode. There is an airport at Mangalore. Manjeshwar has its own major railway station.

Get around

[edit]

Autorikshaws take you anywhere in the town for less than one hundred rupees. The minimum charge is only ₹20.00 for one km distance. You can see them busy all the day because of being cheap and accessible. But autorikshaws are cheap only in North Kerala. Don't expect the same experience across the border in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and South Kerala. Over there, Autorikshaws are considered luxury vehicles and a good bargaining exercise is essential before you hire one.

  • Photography tour by train. Slow trains are called Passenger Trains in India. They are very cheap and punctual. They stop in all small railway stations and give you an opportunity to see the villages from inside and to absorb things slowly. They do not move very slowly, they are only 20% slower than the express trains. Here is a list of railway stations between Manjeshwar and Kannur where the slow trains will stop: Uppala, Kumbla, Kasaragod, Kalanad, Kottikkulam, Bekal Fort, Nileshwar, Charavattur, Chandera, Trikaripur, Payyanur, Ezhimala, Payangadi, Kannapuram, Pappinishery, Chirakkal, Kannur.
  • Beach Road. If you want a pleasant walk in Manjeshwar town with an opportunity to photograph many period building, you can start from the back side of Manjehwar railway station.  Head south and the majestic arches of a village temple welcomes.  Even tea shops are housed in period buildings in this locality.  Continue walking to the Govinda Pai Memorial museum and you can find the police station junction a little forward.  If you turn any right diversion you will reach the beach.  When you walk straight, you will come across a scenic bridge and a green mosque on the mezzanine level.  There is one beautiful temple on your left and some two or three new mosques are also there.  The road ends at the Melangadi township that connects you to the Hosangadi junction on the highway by an upward road going left to you.
