Gresik is a regency in East Java. It's capital is Gresik City.

Gresik has become an international trade center visited by many nations such as the Chinese, Arabs, Champa, and Gujarat since 11th-century. Gresik Regency is also believed as the first entry point for Islam in Java, which is marked by the existence of ancient Islamic tombs from Sheikh Maulana Malik Ibrahim or well known as Sunan Gresik.

By train[edit]

  • 1 Indro Railway Station (Stasiun Indro), Jupuro, Sidorukun. Daily local commuter train from Surabaya.

By bus[edit]

  • 2 Bunder Bus Terminal (Terminal Bus Bunder), Jl. Emerald VII, Banjarsari, Cerme. A DAMRI bus from Juanda Airport, Trans-Jatim public bus from Surabaya, and some intercity bus companies from Jakarta, Bandung, and Denpasar.

By car[edit]

Gresik is 20 km northwest of Surabaya. It can be reached by car via the highway in more or less 35 minutes.

Get around[edit]

There are angkot (public minibusses) in Gresik, sometimes called lyn. The route can be known from its car colour.

  • 1 Giri Kedaton, Jl. Sunan Giri XIII, Pedukuhan, Kebomas. A site in the form of a pesantren (traditional Islamic school) was founded by Sunan Giri. This site is on the hill which was founded in 1487.
  • 2 Dalegan Beach (Pantai Dalegan), Rejodadi, Campurejo, Panceng. A white sand beach.
  • 3 Bukit Jamur, Bungah. 06:00-17:00. Mushroom-like rock formations in a former limestone quarry formed by wind & rain erosion.

  • Boating to Bawean Island, part of Gresik, an island in the Java Sea with gorgeous white sand beaches.

  • Sanggring Kolak Ayam, The annual tradition in the month of Ramadan on the 23rd night is to cook a large amount of kolak ayam (Gresik chicken soup) for iftar in Gumeno village, Manyar district of Gresik. This tradition has been going on for more than 400 years.

It's incomplete to visit Gresik without enjoying a portion of nasi krawu
  • Nasi krawu, rice with beef.
  • Sego Roomo, rice or rice cake topped with boiled spinach and crushed crackers, then layered with Roomo porridge (fine porridge seasoned with garlic, big chilies, galangal, and turmeric).
  • Bonggolan, an oval-shaped snack made from fish meat mixed with starch added with salt and garlic.
  • Pudak, made from rice flour, sugar, and coconut milk which are packed in a package called "ope", which is the midrib of areca leaves.
  • Kolak ayam, a local chicken soup dish.
  • Pepes telur ikan bader, steamed Java barb roe in banana leaves

Try a local coffee drink called, kopi kopyok, the texture of coarsely ground coffee beans brewed with hot water. Before serving, the floating coffee grounds must be shaken or stirred before being enjoyed.
