Surabaya Metropolitan Area is a region of East Java in Indonesia, known locally as Gerbangkertosusila (an acronym of Gresik-Bangkalan-Mojokerto-Surabaya-Sidoarjo-Lamongan). This travel guide covers this area with the exception of Bangkalan, which is in the article on Madura.

By plane[edit]

The Surabaya Metropolitan area is served by Juanda International Airport (SUB IATA) in Sidoarjo. Daily international direct flights from Hongkong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.

By train[edit]

The national rail operator Kereta Api[dead link] runs multiple daily trains from Jakarta and several other cities in East Java, with both daytime and overnight services available.

By car[edit]

Most of the cities in Surabaya Metropolitan Area is well connected from a few of Java island's large cities, thanks to the Trans-Java toll road.

From the neighboring Madura Island, the Suramadu bridge crosses the Madura strait, for free.

By train[edit]

There are several commuter train in the area. KA Komuter DMU train to Sidoarjo and KRD Jenggala to Mojokerto from Surabaya Kota Station in Surabaya. KA Komuter DMU train to Gresik and KA Lokal to Lamongan from Surabaya Pasar Turi Station in Surabaya.

Trans Jatim bus corridor 1 links Gresik, Surabaya, and Sidoarjo. Also Trans Semanggi Suroboyo and Suroboyo Bus serve some routes in Surabaya.

A lot of museums are in Surabaya. Also, the relics of the Majapahit Kingdom can be seen in Trowulan. The critically endangered Bawean deer conservation in Bawean Island is nicely to visit with natural atmosphere.

Pacet and Trawas can be visited to relish the mountainous scenery with waterfalls in the south of the area.

Stop by in Lamongan to enjoy Wisata Bahari Lamongan (WBL), a theme park by the Java Sea.

Eat[edit]

Soto is a soup which is handy to find in the area. In addition, dishes made from lontong (rice cake) such as lontong balap and lontong kupang can also be tried as they are regional specialties.

Drink[edit]

Alcoholic drinks are very difficult to find in minimarkets, you can visit bars in Surabaya. You may try es sinom also in Surabaya, made from tamarind leaves, sugar, and turmeric, has a refreshingly sweet sour taste.
