Salerno, Paestum and Amalfi are the three main cultural cities in the Gulf of Salerno area of the Salerno province of Campania, Southern Italy. It is common for 3-day itineraries to start with a day in Salerno, then day trips from Salerno to Paestum and Amalfi.
Understand
[edit]The history of the Gulf of Salerno, with Salerno, Paestum, and Amalfi as significant points of interest, is a tale of ancient civilizations, maritime trade, and cultural influences. See the articles about each city and the overall region of Campania for more background.
Prepare
[edit]Get in
[edit]If you need to take a plane, you will most likely land at Naples International Airport. Otherwise, you will probably arrive by train, as Salerno is a major railway destination and train travel is a good value in Italy. For more details on these and other methods of entry, see Salerno#Get in.
Go
[edit]Day 1: Arrive in Salerno and visit the city. Day 2: Take a train or a bus from Salerno to Paestum and visit Paestum, then come back to Salerno to sleep. Day 3: Take a bus (or ferry during summer) from Salerno to Amalfi to visit Amalfi, then come back to Salerno.
Stay safe
[edit]While Salerno, Paestum, and Amalfi are generally considered safe for tourists, it's important to exercise common-sense safety precautions, especially in crowded areas like bars and train stations. Stay safe and avoid pickpockets.
