Restaurant listings

I think Bangalore has enough restaurant listings. Any more, and it will gain yet another epithet - 'the city of restaurant listings'. However, more hotel names and recommendations as well as more things to do and see would make useful additions.

Also, it would very helpful if someone could add astericks next to the restaurant listings to indicate the price range of their food and a V for vegetarian food(*= Budget, **= Mid-range, ***= Splurge V= vegetarians catered for), and also possibly write a one line comment about them.

Example:

  • Bangalore Dosa Restaurant - 100 MG Road. Phone:XXXX XXXX.**V The dosa are great, but the decor nothing special.
  • Mysore Palace Restaurant- 100 Church Street.***V Phone:XXXX XXXX. Great food. Great atmosphere.

(many restaurant listings are old, I don't have new numbers or inspiration to cleanup) (taxi section needs to be re-edited. There are call-taxis e.g www.merucabs.com

There is a policy on showing the price range in the Manual of style. We are better off following that.
--(WT-en) Ravikiran 03:42, 1 Sep 2005 (EDT)
Of course, using the manual for style for restaurants used in the template for big cities (i.e. restaurants listed under the sub-headings of 'Budget', Mid-range and 'Splurge' []) is a good standard. However, in the case of Bangalore, the restaurants have already been catergorized by the style of cuisine. Now, if you want to pick out every individual restaurant from the present exhaustive list and recategorize according to price, then great. However, as few individuals have this knowledge, I think the asterick method offers a way for a number of people to add the information regarding price over a period of time, while at the same time still following the official categorizations. Believe me, this format has been used succesfully on other pages. Anyway, this is just an idea to solve a problem. If you strongly object, so be it. I'm happy to follow your way - SZ
I misunderstood your comment to mean that your asterisk policy was supposed to be a replacement for the price range rather than as a way to classify it by budget, midrange and splurge. Yes, to classify it into B/M/S, your idea is a good one. I completely support it. Just wanted to make it clear that if folks have the price information, even approximately, they should go ahead and put it in.
-- (WT-en) Ravikiran 14:50, 1 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Hi Ravikiran. Thanks for your reply, and sorry that I didn't originally explain my proposal clearly. I put out this question for discussion on the Manual of style discussion page. Evan replied that he would prefer to use the actual prices rather than astericks. So, I suggest we forget about astericks and follow the pricing method as this has already been established. Thanks for your input. Below is is new example - SZ
Wait, why don't we use both? A traveller might know just enough about the restaurant to know that it comes in the budget range. Let him just add a star. If he knows, let him add the price range. When we have B/M/S information for a lot of restaurant, someone can just recast it to conform to the MOS. I've recasted the examples below.

Example:

-- (WT-en) Ravikiran 03:37, 2 Sep 2005 (EDT)

V = Vegetarian's catered for

  • Bangalore Dosa Restaurant - 100 MG Road. Phone:XXXX XXXX. Open Tues-Sun 11AM-10PM. The dosa are great (especially the masala dosa), but the decor nothing special. 80-150Rs. * V.
  • Mysore Palace Restaurant- 100 Church Street. Phone:XXXX XXXX. Open seven days 7AM-11PM. Great food, though a little pricey. Check out the beautiful sandalwood carvings in the foyer. 650-800Rs. ** V.

If you are NOT a Kannadiga, kindly DO NOT take the trouble of adding absurd things to the language description section. --- Thanks. Rama.

  • The list of restaurants in Bangalore grows longer and longer, but without any price scale, it is of limited value to the traveler. If someone is familiar with the Bangalore restaurant scene, could they please begin to fill out this section with reviews and a rough list of prices. The follow is an example. Thanks.

V=Vegetarians catered for.

  • Bangalore Dosa Restaurant, 100 MG Road. Tel:XXXX XXXX. Open Tues-Sun 11AM-10PM.The dosa are great (especially the masala dosa), but the decor nothing special. 80-150Rs. V.
  • Mysore Palace Restaurant, 100 Church Street. Tel:XXXX XXXX. Open seven days 7AM-11PM.Great food, though a little pricey. Check out the beautiful sandalwood carvings in the foyer. 650-800Rs. V.
Hi! I really appreciate the effort you're putting into the restaurants listings in this guides, but I really don't think there is any need to reinvent the listing format for this one guide. Why not just say "Vegetarian options" or something more descriptive as part of the restaurant description? We really aim for consistancy and simplicitiy here so having just one guide with it's own set of restaurant codes (V ** ?? !;-<) is going to make it harder on the reader. But again, thanks for all the great edits! 207.134.56.158 11:29, 24 Jan 2006 (EST)

I came across the Bangalore Buddy website , which is strictly a non profit, no advertizing recommendation site for people relocating or visiting for restaurants, bars, hotels, electricians, architects , etc. I can say as an expat living here, it's been a great help. There aren't many sites I could find, as most info comes word of mouth. it's http://www.bangalorebuddy.in

Get out section

I got the following question about an External link for a newspaper article about Kokkare Bellur, which is at the bottom of the Get out section. - (WT-en) Huttite 07:48, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)

I haved added a small section on Kokkare Bellur in Bangalore including an external link to a news papper artcile about the organisation working in that village to protect the nesting site. Can you please have a look and let me know if its ok to have link there. -(WT-en) anurag 04:23, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)

My reply
I did a little copyedit on the section about Kokkare Bellur in the Bangalore article. I moved the external link to be a note beside the activity of MAN - because it is probably a primary source for information, unless MAN have their own website about this project. However, it would be better if the whole section moved to its own article. Indeed, the whole Bangalore article seems to be getting overburdened with information about other places, not Bangalore. -- (WT-en) Huttite 07:29, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)

My logic for doing this is that the newspaper link is probably the best information available and when the section is moved to a new article the link to the story will not be lost. Once it is moved it could be put onto that new article's talk page as a contributor source or incorporated into the article itself. I see it as a temporary measure until the Bangalore article is tidied up and non-Bangalore sections are moved to their own articles. -- (WT-en) Huttite 07:48, 9 Jan 2006 (EST)

-- Dont understand the logic behind adding chennai in the bangalore's getout section , its a totally different city , and in no way is near to bangalore(Min 8 hours of travel by road.)

Huge city?

I think Bangalore is a candidate for a Huge city template -- there's a lot in this guide. Anyone have an idea of what the Districts would be? (WT-en) Majnoona 11:33, 24 Jan 2006 (EST)

Bangalore is definitely big enough to warrant a huge city template, and I have already added a 'districts' header to encourage anyone who does know the districts to add the info. (WT-en) WindHorse 24 Jan 06

Agree. It has been a candidate for some time. --(WT-en) Ravikiran 14:42, 24 Jan 2006 (EST)

Inclusion of information about Temples & Lakes

Hi

I was browsing for some good Dhabas arround Bangalore and hit this site. This site is really impressive and has in one place every thing you need to know about Bangalore, Hats-Off to who ever thought about it.

I feel there can be a section where information and details of Temple in Bangalore, I know there are many to write, some one can look into identifying and writing about the same, to name some big temples "ISCKON" Temple , Rajarajeswari Temple, Big Hanuman Temple, Bull Temple(this is aleady mentiond), Raggi Guda temple etc.

Similarly I could not find any thing on the water bodies , i know most of them are drying out, but still feel that there are some worth mentioning.

Hope my comments are accepted and some more information added to this page.

Regards Vinod

Plunge forward! Go ahead and edit! If you know the city, you are the best person to add the information. --(WT-en) Ravikiran 06:54, 25 Jan 2006 (EST)
Hey Vinod, yes there are still some nice lakes around Bangalore, even though, as you say, some of them are diminishing in size. I'll try to dig up some information about them. The Bull Temple is Bangalore's most famous, but there are many other places to pray to the gods, but I'm not too familar with them. If you can help with these, great. Likewise, I've been unable to find any lists of the city's districts - even Wikipedia, which usually offers exhausitive information on such matters, doesn't have them listed. If I enter them from memory, then there will definitely be gaping holes. It would be great if you could also help with this? As Ravikiran say, just plunge ahead. However, as you no doubt know, if you use to the guide that you mentioned as the source of your information, it will have to be rewritten in your own words. The information cannot be directly copied. Thanks for suggestions. (WT-en) WindHorse 25 Jan 06
Thanks Ravi and WindHorse for your comments, I just happened to hit this site and found that there are lots of information, I thought that it would be good if more information can be added. The information what I mentioned about the temples and lakes were just the basic any one would know. I think it would be good if some one who is very knowledgable on these areas should put in the information.

Regards Vinod

Phone numbers

Are listed differently as:

  • 1234 5678
  • 1234-5678
  • 12345678

Which is the correct way of listing an Indian (or Bangalorian) phone number? - (WT-en) bulliver 16:31, 16 March 2006 (EST)

There is no standard in India, but I've been using 1234 5678 all over the India pages. And in Bangalore, please prefix the numbers with ''+91 80'' to bring them in line with the requirement that the full international code should be listed. (WT-en) Ravikiran 16:54, 16 March 2006 (EST)
Done and done. Thanks! - (WT-en) bulliver 17:14, 16 March 2006 (EST)

Fast Food

I cannot make sense of this section. Are all these listings Adiga's restaurants? Can someone local to, or familiar with Bangalore clean this up and format it better? - (WT-en) bulliver 16:39, 16 March 2006 (EST)

The eat section needs some cleanup

As it is now the current restaurant listings gives zero benefits to the reader. To only list a name of a restaurant with no comment or price indication is totally worthless. I will try to cleanup the eat section a bit by deleting all entries that don’t have any comment attached to them. (WT-en) Landercut 10:10, 20 April 2006 (EDT)

I second this, and would add that the restaurant break-down by region/ethnicity doesn't make a lot of sense. The vast, vast majority of restaurants in Bangalore are "multi-cuisine" restaurants that serve a smattering of South Indian, North Indian, and Chinese food. (Now, what they're good at is a different matter...) I would like to add Koshy's and Empire to the list, but I'm not sure where they belong. Koshy's in particular is kind of a hybrid Continental/South Indian joint. Also, the complaints about the number of restaurant listings is preposterous: Bangalore is an enormous city with thousands of restaurants. This page barely even scratches the surface. (WT-en) ChrisC 13:36, 6 August 2006 (EDT)
According to our Project:Manual of style restaurants in Big/Huge cities should be broken down into Budget, Mid-range, and Splurge, not by type of restaurant. Please plunge forward edit the page. One option is to remove the whole list to this page for reference and just start from scratch with the place you think belong... (WT-en) Maj 13:40, 6 August 2006 (EDT)

Have added Budget/Mid-Range/Splurge subsections and moved over the listings I was fairly confident of. I'm defining Budget as less than Rs 150 and Mid-Range as less than Rs 500, on average. The regional listings should migrate over eventually. (Most of these places are probably mid-range by my definition.) (WT-en) ChrisC 14:13, 6 August 2006 (EDT)

Oh, also, the restaurants should probably be alphabetized. I'm being lazy about this. (WT-en) ChrisC 14:15, 6 August 2006 (EDT)

Indian beers often contains the preservative 'glycerol' which can cause headaches. To avoid them, open the bottle and quickly tip it upside down, with the top immersed, into a full glass of water. An oily film (the glycerol) decends into the water - when this stops, remove the bottle and enjoy the glycerol-free beer. Cheers

I'm pretty sure this from 192.249.41.3 is a copy-and-paste from Lonely Planet. Don't have the book in front of me right now. (WT-en) ChrisC 02:23, 8 August 2006 (EDT)

As I suspected, this is word-for-word from the Food & Drink section of Lonely Planet India. The information itself is useful (although I'm not sure that Kingfisher has glycerol and it's never given me headaches), but I hesitate to paraphrase it here so as not to violate Project:Copyleft. (WT-en) ChrisC 14:09, 8 August 2006 (EDT)

Grand Ashok

I rolled back a deletion of the Grand Ashok. Is there a reason we shouldn't have it on this page? --(WT-en) Evan 14:08, 13 December 2006 (EST)

Dont Get duped by 'helpless Tirupati pilgrims

While in Bangalore many a time you'll find yourself being approached by whole families of people especially around MG Road and CHurch Street in the late evenings, who'll start with sadly asking you if you know Hindi, and then will narrate a really heart-wrenching story of how they were duped by a travel company who promised to take them for Tirupati Darshan and and left them in Bangalore to fend for themselves, without taking them to their promised destination. Now these troubled 'family' have sold their lands (quite surprising as they claim to be weaving "artists"), thats what they claim. You do get carried away, as you are undergoing beginners-unluck with this lot. You decide to help these poor god-forsaken people and reach out for your wallet. The small kids are religiously crying and wailing.... you take out a tenner and hand it to the 'mukhiya' of the family; theres lots of exchanges of smiles and pleasantries; and you part. 10 minutes down the line, you stop by to buy a coke, you reach for your wallet and.... what you get is a feel of you butt thru the pocket fabris! hows that? And you wont need Sherlock Holmes to solve this one for you.

Bangalore (Bengaluru for the linguistically inclined smaritans) is a haven for beggars. They arent the needy hapless destitutes, but a part of an organised beggar-mafia which includes many ugly things including human traficking and maiming/drugging young children among ghastly others. The admnistration has done precious little and the NGOs are not very far behind. Dont be surprised if an innocent urchin approaches you on MG Road and before you know it, snatches from your hand your ice-cream cone, and melts into the crowd leaving you behind dazed and confused!

Krav Maga

I deleted the following section as the contents conflict with the What not to link to and numerous other guidelines, and the single line listing in Bangalore#Do is more than sufficient. ~ 203.144.143.4 23:46, 17 January 2008 (EST)

Bengaluru vs. Bangalore

The Mumbai article is no longer "Bombay," Kolkota no longer "Calcutta." Why does "Bangalore" still persist? (WT-en) Zepppep 08:13, 31 December 2010 (EST)

Perhaps you wish to recommend a move to Bengaluru as per Project:Naming conventions with a change of the intro to read Bengaluru, previously known as Bangalore, but now the name has been officially changed." This will require a consensus here on the Talk page. Official names, although generally preferred may not necessarily be appropriate if the majority of travellers know the destination as Bangalore. It would of course need a re-direct of Bangalore pointing to Bengaluru as I suspect that not many people know it by the official name. The airport currently carries the name Bengaluru International Airport (BLR IATA), (ICAO: VOBL). I have changed that in a recent Bangalore article edit. Please note there is already a redirect established for Bengaluru that points to Bangalore. (WT-en) felix 10:55, 18 January 2011 (EST)
Yes, that's what I'm aiming for: a redirect. Who else thinks Bengaluru should be the article name, with Bangalore as a redirect? Felix (above) has already changed the airport name; any others have their 2 cents? (WT-en) Zepppep 12:17, 18 April 2011 (EDT)
Wikivoyage naming conventions dictates that we should use the most commonly used English name. I would say that is unquestionably Bangalore.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 06:11, 6 July 2011 (EDT)
The same would be true of "Calcutta." It's overwhelmingly known as that in the English-speaking world, yet the article is Kolkata with a redirect from the former. "Mumbai" has overtaken "Bombay" in usage, I believe, and thus I would agree with your statement above, but I would still steer folks in the direction of "Bengaluru" if "Kolkata" is what's being used. (WT-en) Zepppep 14:54, 12 July 2011 (EDT)
Not sure I agree that Calcutta remains the common English name. Kolkata is very widely used.
On Bengaluru, it is hard to find too much usage at all, bar in official govt circles. Asking Indian friends, they all still use Bangalore but have adopted common usage of the other major city renamings. Wikipedia agrees (after a long debate ) and uses Bangalore (but uses Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi etc). The local cricket team is the Royal Challengers Bangalore (but the equivalents are Mumbai Indians, Chennai SuperKings, Kochi Tuskers and Kolkata Knight Riders).--(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:51, 13 July 2011 (EDT)

There are many IT training institutes in the city that cater to the needs of those who need to learn computer skills - from using a computer to programming using the latest technology. Classes are typically for a couple of hours every day and courses may last anywhere between a few days to a couple of months. Quality of training varies significantly across institutes and not all certifications provided by such institutes are accepted by the Indian IT industry.

Churches and Hospitals

A large editing session today seems to have resulted into several churches being added to the See section. These seem like run-of-the-mill churches and I am struggling to see why they would be of any interest to a traveler. If the interest is for services only, they should be in a Cope section and then only as brief listings.

Also, the list of hospitals has grown to Yellow Pages-like proportions. Again of very limited (if any) interest to the traveller.

A reminder that Wikivoyage is a travel guide and not a public listing directory.

If anyone wishes to argue differently about the churches and hospitals, please do so here.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 08:44, 18 July 2011 (EDT)

I didn't see how this long, largely undifferentiated list would be useful to visitors, but if you know of any particular hospitals that cater to a lot of medical tourists or that are particularly good for emergency medicine, such that perhaps an ambulance could be directed there, maybe you can re-list a few of them with such stipulations. Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:38, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Agree that the listing can be trimmed down to the ones that cater to medical tourism but I have the feeling the list might attract commercial edits which are hard to verify. Ti22 (talk) 10:29, 4 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Koramangala

Someone created a page for Koramangala, which doesn't make sense because it is part of Bangalore and we haven't districted Bangalore yet. I redirected Koramangala to Bangalore for now. I took the call that there is nothing worth merging in the Koramangala page. But if anyone wants to have a look, it's at Talk:Bangalore/Koramangala
