Talk:Bishkek
Add topicI removed a gratuitous comment to Slavonic University as better than American University. First, it's obviously a undocumented opinion; second, if you read the newspaper stories on corruption in central asian schools, American University is widely regarded as the most legitimate degree you can get in the region.
Totally agree about the Slavonic University, I've spoken to locals who say they can afford the tuition there, but not the bribes. The part about trusting the police is dead on, they will try to take money from you if they sense one ounce of vulnerability.
The part about STDs I don't know if I agree with, prostitution is widespread, but not like I've seen in other cities and AIDS is almost non-exsistant here, something like less than 1,000 people and mostly in the south. Either way definitely wrap up with locals.
I disagree that travel to Bishkek should be avoided at this time. It would be more appropriate to exercise caution, but there is no threat to foreigners.

Remove warning
[edit]I think it is probably about time to remove the warning that says:
WARNING: Bishkek is currently experiencing political instability. Therefore, travellers should be aware of events and be prepared to alter their travel plans, if necessary. No foreigners have been targeted or victimized as part of the recent coup and demonstrations. It is recommended to avoid being near demonstrations.
There has been a peaceful transition of power from the transitional government and there are no demonstrations and no instability. Besides, the revolution happened two years ago. This warning is simply inaccurate and out of date. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 212.241.20.66 (talk • contribs)

Photo of Ala-Too Square is out of date
[edit]The photo of Ala-Too Square is out of date as of Spring of 2012. The Freedom Statute shown has been replaced with one of the legendary Kyrgyz hero Manas, from the epic of the same name.
National Historical Museum
[edit]Google says:
Permanently closed State History Museum is permanently closed. If that's wrong, you can suggest an edit.
Not sure what to make of that. Lazarus1255 (talk) 02:00, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

- No FoP in Kyrgyzstan. Do we want this? (it's a nice image, IMO) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:20, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- We're using File:Ala Too Square Bishkek 2021.jpg, instead. I think that's more useful and should be uploaded locally. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:30, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
