Move to Chaoshan?

[edit]

As far as I can tell "Chaoshan" (潮汕) is a more common name for this region than "Eastern Guangdong" (粤东) in both English and Chinese. The name "Chaoshan" also conveys that this is a cohesive region with a distinctive identity and characteristics, not one of the "Eastern X" and "Southern Y" type regions that Wikivoyage sometimes carves up to make our breadcrumbs work. On the other hand there seems to be some disagreement online about whether or not Shanwei is part of Chaoshan, though Baidu Baike says that it is. The dog2 knows something about this area—any thoughts? —Granger (talk · contribs) 10:38, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

"Chaoshan" certainly is the most common name to refer to the Teochew-speaking areas, which would be the cities of Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang. The reason why including Shanwei is controversial is because the local dialect is distinct from Teochew even though it is similar, and has some degree of mutual intelligibility. I haven't heard much of the Shanwei dialect, but judging from the snippets I've heard, I would describe it as an intermediate between Teochew and Hokkien (Minnan). But since Baidu Baike classifies Shanwei as part of Chaoshan, I have no objection to the move. The dog2 (talk) 16:47, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger:So what do you think? Chaoshan is most certainly the more commonly heard term, and I've in fact never heard the term "Eastern Guangdong" being used in Chinese, but whether or not Shanwei should be included in Chaoshan is controversial. If you want to move it, I have no objection. I just moved the Fujian regions myself so they are known by their more common names. The dog2 (talk) 19:41, 20 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Okay, if no one else objects, I'll move the page and adjust the breadcrumbs and so on. I may not get to it for a few days, though, because I want to finish working on Kaiping first. —Granger (talk · contribs) 01:32, 21 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
