Rural areas unreachable by long-distance bus?[edit]
Re: the first sentence of this article ("Many parts of Malaysia [especially in jungle areas] have limited public transport; a car is a necessary item to get around most of Malaysia, especially outside the major cities. "): I used to live in a kampung halfway between K. Terengganu and K. Dungun in the state of Terengganu, and you were always able to get there from K.L. by taking a bus for K. Terengganu and telling the bus driver where to drop you off. Similarly, you could hop on the long-distance bus by waiting on the side of the coastal highway and hailing the bus as it was going by. This was as true during my return visit to Malaysia in 2003 as it was in the 1970s. Also, very little jungle remains in the Peninsula, at least. Is all of rural Malaysia really unreachable by bus now? True, you won't be able to take a bus across the mukim in rural areas, and it was impossible for me to find a bicycle to rent in the kampung in 2003, but I think you would still be able to get from major cities to rural areas that are on bus routes between cities by bus.
