Gallipoli to Usable[edit]

(Discussion copied from Gallipoli page, which is redirected to Eceabat)

It's a shame that this is only an Outline, as it's such a historically important site and site for international visitors. A map should be inserted. What else needs to be done to get this article to Usable status, and even better, to Guide? Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:30, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

After a quick look at the article, the lack of the following bothered me most:
  • An extremely important "history" section (the readers can gather bits from the lead and the "understand" currently, but this is one of the articles at Wikivoyage that would benefit from a concise and complete history section most)
  • More detailed climate info
  • More options of getting in, especially public transport, if it exists (if not, the article should mention that too)
  • Either a longer "get around" section, or a separate "orientation" subsection on how to move between the sites, the relative locations of them to each other and the distances inbetween, along with the map you mentioned
  • A much more detailed "see" section with descriptions on where to see what, and what happened where; it's highly likely that some/many sites are altogether missing currently
  • I guess there are not many activities other than visiting the war-related sites in the place, but the beaches for a good swim may be a good addition to "do"
  • More eat, drink, and sleep listings within the park (I'm sure they exist)
  • More pictures are rarely a bad thing
I could perhaps gather info on at least some of these, but that may take a long time, and I may need to pay another visit there (it should have been more than a decade the last time I was there).

I think knowing what needs to be done is the first step, even if it takes a long time to do it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:20, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Almost seven years later: there's lots of content but it's still a muddle, same goes for the nearby towns, with much duplication and gaps. I think this page would be easier to sort if re-considered as a Park, with listings migrating to the "cities". Of those, Eceabat is small and Kilitbahir is tiny, and both look destined to become even smaller once the Dardanelles bridge is complete. I therefore propose merging K > E and covering the south of the peninsula there, with Gelibolu covering the middle. Grahamsands (talk) 16:56, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Other than merging Kilitbahir into Eceabat, I don't think I am clear on what the proposal entails. Would you please elaborate? Vidimian (talk) 22:13, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's chiefly a matter of perspective. If you judge Gallipoli as a City, its present classification, then it's sketchy on where to stay, eat etc. But if it's a Park, then it's in good shape already, all that is holding back its ascent through the rankings is the poor-to-outline state of the nearby city pages. So these need the most work. I'm thinking to sort out Gelibolu first, then Eceabat / Kilitbahir, then see what remains to do with Gallipoli. While Çanakkale could do with updating, that would be a separate exercise. Grahamsands (talk) 09:10, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a plan. Let's see how it works out. Vidimian (talk) 11:34, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Gelibolu and Eceabat feel just about done, is the level of detail right? There’s obviously much more that could be written about the military history, and there are scores more memorials and cemeteries, row upon aching row of them. Travellers will only be interested in the big-name stuff, and then the specific bluff that great-great uncle Harry stormed, and the specific plot where he’s buried. For those they should search elsewhere, eg at CWGC.
If this detail is right, then the western and Turkish war sites and the non-war POIs all sit nicely together on the Eceabat page. Can anyone offer a reality check on the “spoons shrine”? – I picked up this offbeat story from throwaway comments in Turkish, and may have misunderstood. As it’s next to the ferry pier it would be churlish not to mention it.
Kilitbahir now looks ready to redirect into Eceabat, but what to do about Gallipoli page? It looks redundant so I propose re-directing, transferring its banner to Eceabat. That town will dwindle as a ferry port, while the Gallipoli story lives on. Grahamsands (talk) 11:14, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Done and both Eceabat and Gelibolu now look usable. The rest of Eastern Thrace is of variable quality, I might tackle them in the new year. Grahamsands (talk) 11:01, 16 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
