Cleaning house[edit]

Swept in from the pub

Would something about preparing your house to leave make a reasonable travel topic, under Preparation? A brief trip shouldn't require much, but I was thinking about snowbirds (people who spend the winter in warmer climates). What do you think? WhatamIdoing (talk) 06:42, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but don't forget some warnings. Some burglars pick targets based on things like Facebook posts from people saying they're going away for a few days or a winter. Often it is fairly easy to find the address & the neighborhood indicates whether a heist might be worthwhile. Pashley (talk) 07:04, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think that a topic that generally covered making plans for being away from home could be useful. Things like arranging for paying bills that will come when away, getting a friend to keep an eye on your home, turning off the water etc. Although some of the advice may verge on obvious, it is easy to forget something in the hurry to get away. House-sitting might also be discussed. When I was in Iran, decades back, there were a lot of expats and many of them took holidays at home for months at a time. One guy had a reputation as a fine house sitter; he had not had his own place in a year or two & was booked up several months ahead. Pashley (talk) 15:23, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I just started Getting ready to leave. It is very sparse and ugly, so feel free to jump in and have a go. User:Pashley, I meant to mention house-sitting, but I forgot until just after I saved the page, so perhaps you will add that idea yourself. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:19, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
