Merger[edit]

  • Now that the overlap with South Kingstown has been eliminated, is the merger still needed? They look like two sufficiently separate articles to me. Ground Zero (talk) 14:29, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • I am still unsure what to do about this. Now that the listings have been moved to the correct articles and duplications have been removed each article does have enough information to be stand alone. However the location of POI a geographically overlapping. Open the map using the top right-hand corner icon on South Kingstown and switch on Destinations and Boundaries. Notice that some of South Kingtown is the other side of Kingstown and goes right up to the edge of Wakefield. Now I have not been to this location so could really do with some local input here, but if you were visiting and driving round the area would you notice where these boundaries are? If you are staying at any of the hotels in South Kingstown you have to drive through Wakefield and Kingstown to reach most of the POI mentioned in the article. --Traveler100 (talk) 16:13, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • I see what you mean. Wikipedia says that the village of Kingston is a part of the Town of South Kingstown. I'm sure that this wouldn't be the only doughnut-shaped place for which we have an article, but I can see the merit in merging them. Ground Zero (talk) 17:09, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
When you talk about the boundaries of towns in New England, please keep in mind that all New England states are divided into townships, which are sub-county political divisions. Each township may have several towns (I think actually called villages) within it. None of this is really relevant to Wikivoyage, except that it should prevent some proposals of mergers. But in this case, we can see that South Kingstown surrounds Kingston, so a combined article is probably more useful. Ground Zero (talk) 20:54, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that is the point. For South Kingstown I can see it makes sense to keep East Matunuck and Matunuck as articles as these are discreet locations, but with the boundaries and locations of listings for the other villages I am not so sure.
At a quick glance, they look like distinct and decently developed articles, so why the need to spend time on a merger or even discussing one? Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:57, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Because it would be easier for travellers to read one article for the whole region, instead of a doughnut article and a doughnut-hole article. Ground Zero (talk) 22:14, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Have you checked the geographic locations of listed places to see if they aren't distinct and clustered in particular areas, or are you just going by official boundaries? Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:56, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Follow the directions that Traveler100 provides above in the second comment. The South Kingstown map has markers on both sides of Kingston. Hm... now I want a doughnut.... Ground Zero (talk) 23:14, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, in this case, a merge probably makes sense. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:26, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Traveler100: you have consensus to implement the merger you proposed. Plunge forward! Ground Zero (talk) 19:22, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
