Jewish population in Russia[edit]

Do we want to go with a figure of 150,000, as given in the article? w:History of the Jews in Russia gives a more complex picture. I think it might be more instructive to say that whereas the Jewish population in Russia used to be in the millions, now estimates tend toward the hundreds of thousands, with the low end close to 150,000. Travel focus[edit]

This is the more relevant issue. This looks like a very brief summary of a Wikipedia article. How is any of this relevant to travelers? Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:53, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is travel related at least by telling travellers that Russia is not ethnically homogeneous and giving pointers about where to read about the different cultures. If the linked articles have the right focus I think this is already of some value. That end could be met in Russia#Understand and Russia#Talk, but those sections have a lot of other content, so if details can be added here instead of there, this page has a raison d'être. It could if course be developed. --LPfi (talk) 14:21, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Many of those ethnic groups can be described more thoroughly, such as the Sami people. Until the description is long enough to branch off to an independent article, it can be placed here. /Yvwv (talk) 14:46, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that there's any travel relevance to this article, in its current state. The fact that Russia is a diverse country, with various minorities traditionally concentrated in discrete regions, can and should be mentioned in Russia#Understand. This article gives readers absolutely no reason to visit any of the regions that are mentioned, unless they have some kind of weird fetish about visiting places where minority cultures predominate just because. Instead, I repeat, it's like a very brief summary of an encyclopedia article, or several of them. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:32, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You are right that the article gives no reason to get interested in the minorities, but one does not have to have some odd fetish to be interested in minorities. Those who are (in general or in specific ones) get some pointers even in the article's current state. If it were better, I believe it could also wake interest and give better pointers. --LPfi (talk) 09:45, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, let's try this again: I could easily see an area mainly populated by a minority that is all 1970s cinder block housing and nothing interesting. With this article, we'd be none the wiser. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:33, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
