Talk:Mount Buller
Primary school in "Learn"
[edit]Is that really what this section is supposed to be about? Here's what Wikivoyage:Article skeleton templates/Sections#Learn says:
Used in any destination article, but mostly in Country, Big City, and District articles. Optional.
For larger destinations, this should include general information about schools and classes for language, culture, or other activities that international travellers may be interested in. City guides can include specifics, as well as unique opportunities for learning. Don't just list local colleges, though; make sure they have specific value for a traveller.
If a local university is being listed primarily for its architecture, its concert halls or its museums, it may make more sense to include it as an attraction ("See") or activity in its home city.
If even ordinary universities shouldn't be listed just for being there, under what circumstances would a primary school be listed? I think not unless it's of special architectural or historical interest, and then it would belong in "See". All that said, I can see how the current text could be useful for parents taking children on a winter trip to Mount Buller, so maybe we should keep it on that basis:
If you are interested in staying in Buller for most or all of the winter season with children, it is possible for them to receive an adequate education. Mansfield Primary School operates a campus in Mount Buller in the Alpine Central building, however this is only for students from Foundation to Grade 6 level, and only operates during the winter season. Mansfield High School operates a similar seasonal program for Grade 7 to 10 students.
What I definitely find unacceptable for a travel guide is this part, which I removed:
The closest full-time primary school is in Merrijig, and the closest secondary school is in Mansfield. You could also consider virtual schools, such as Virtual School Victoria or Haileybury Pangea.
La Trobe University used to operate a campus at Mount Buller, however this closed in 2006 due to low enrolment and a lack of profitability. The nearest university to Mount Buller is in Shepparton, however, at a 2-hour drive from Buller, it is not a sustainable option for students.
This text is either about full-time primary schools, which also are not for travelers, about virtual schools, which are not about travel, or about a university that doesn't exist and another one which is out of town and not shown to be for travelers.
Also, maybe someone could tell me where we made the decision that there shouldn't be "Learn" listings for institutions of learning unless they either had "year abroad" programs, summer or shorter-term sessions or sessions for non-matriculated students, but we were talking about universities, not primary schools.
