City vs. prefecture[edit]

User:Texugo just removed a list of towns in Ningde prefecture. I think that should be restored; if we aren't going to have a Ningde (prefecture) article (and I don't think we should), then we should list them here.

He or she also took out a map with comment "remove prefecture map that doesn't show the city's position; this has never been a prefecture article". Actually, the map did show the city's position, as well as prefecture borders. I feel quite strongly that it should go back in. Pashley (talk) 17:51, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We can have a city article about the city, or we can have a region article about the homonymous prefecture — we cannot have a weird hybrid of both, and there's really no need to. The list of towns is already covered in the region article; there's no reason to turn this city article into a hybrid city/prefecture article just to list them again. And why would any traveller even need to know of the existence of the homonymous county anyway? Sheridan, Wyoming is also the seat of a homonymous county, and Ribeirão Preto, Brazil is the seat of both a homonymous administrative microregion and a homonymous administrative macroregion, but none of that stuff matters because we have no need to include such structures in our hierachy. We routinely ignore various countries' idiosyncratic ways of organizing their administrations (counties in the US, micro/macroregions in Brazil, etc.) because the technical structure of local government just doesn't affect travellers much. Why would this be different? Texugo (talk) 18:03, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I was pretty sure the map showed the prefecture's position within the province, not the actual city's position. I could be wrong, but city articles typically do not get locator maps anyway. Texugo (talk) 18:04, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
