Thanks for the link to the Wikipedia discussion. You should use English exclusively when posting on English-language Wikivoyage because most of us don't know French. And that leads to my main point: How many of your search results are in French? The standard on Wikivoyage is that we use the spelling most commonly used in _English_. That's why, for example, we use Rome and not Roma, Germany and not Deutschland, Cologne and not Köln, and more controversially, Mangalore and not Mengaluru, which is the official name in India. So in order to change the name of this article, you'd have to establish that the Pétion-Ville spelling is currently more common _in English_. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:09, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm lost as to your answer.
From the findings of the official Pétion-Ville of Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:P%C3%A9tion-Ville#Spelling
"the results used by Haitian officials, the occasional use in circulars and the fact that our English encyclopedia assumes foreign spellings at times, may just be enough to narrow out WP:COMMONNAME in favor of Pétion-Ville"
So if an error is propagating, to stop it from spreading I have to prove that it is an error?
The "Office des Postes d'Haiti" (Haitian postal office):
http://www.laposte.gouv.ht/details.php?ID=34
I would love to know what more would be needed to convince this is an error. Please direct me as I'm lost.
Just to be clear, Wikipedia is suppose to be a free online encyclopedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Five_pillars
And the definition of an encyclopedia is articles focus on factual information concerning the subject for which the article is named. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclopedia
With that said, I have proof of the correct name spelling of the city is Pétion-Ville ( http://www.laposte.gouv.ht/details.php?ID=34 ), where is your proof that Pétionville is factual? Taziobaker (talk) 18:30, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

The point is which term is commonly used in English. If there is no commonly used spelling in English, local spelling becomes important. Otherwise it doesn't. That's why München redirects to Munich for instance. Hobbitschuster (talk) 19:21, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
The reality is that the majority of these issue is caused by exonyms https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exonym_and_endonym:
where a substantial proportion of English exonyms for places in continental Europe are borrowed (or adapted) from French; for example: Navarre (Navarra/Nafarroa), Belgrade (Beograd), Cologne (Köln), Munich (München), Prague (Praha), Rome (Roma), Naples (Napoli), Florence (Firenze), Copenhagen (København), etc.
Pétion-Ville is a French word, so can we agree here?
By the way, even the US Embassy in Haiti shows this spelling on its site's search results for petion https://search.usembassy.gov/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&affiliate=dos_emb_wha_haiti&query=petion

Did you mean Mangalore vs Mangaluru? Per the little I have been able to find out regarding India's Mangalore vs Mangaluru, it is Indians (Indians citizens and govenments officials) deciding which to pick and not some outside group. If what I have understood is correct, it would discard this example from you argument.

If I may interject, this page is already using an acute accent (é), which is far from COMMONNAME (in fact the least) as you will see from the extensive search results that was conducted in the link provided by Taziobaker seen above. So I don't exactly see the point in opposing this move. It is commonplace to see accent marks assigned to people and places in the English-Wikipedia. You also do not need a discussion to move a page Ikan Kekek only when controversial in which is the case right now. There has been no active discussions on this page prior. Savvyjack23 (talk) 23:17, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hobbitschuster, Navarre (Navarra/Nafarroa), Belgrade (Beograd), Cologne (Köln), Munich (München), Prague (Praha), Rome (Roma), Naples (Napoli), Florence (Firenze), Copenhagen (København) etc. are poor examples, as Pétion-Ville uses the same letters albeit the acute accent, which this page is already using. Résumé is a better example, as you will find both English and French uses and so it is no more a French word then English. Pétion is also a name of a real person (Alexandre Pétion), whose town was named after. His name is also spelled with an acute accent on the English-Wikipedia. The argument here is in favor of the dash. Savvyjack23 (talk) 23:19, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Please carefully review what was used to determine COMMONNAME. Savvyjack23 (talk) 23:23, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Taziobaker, you misunderstood about Mangalore. The issue isn't what's official in India but what spelling is most used in the English language. And outside groups frequently determine the spellings and even names in English of well-known places. Pétion-Ville is not a really well-known place in the English-speaking world, though. Let's see if anyone has any objection to moving the article in the next 48 hours or so. If not, I certainly have no reason to have a strong opinion about this. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:01, 12 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Much appreciated. Savvyjack23 (talk) 02:54, 14 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Ikan Kekek. (It's been 48hrs, can I change it now?)Taziobaker (talk) 18:14, 14 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
The matter having been duly discussed and agreed upon, you may indeed proceed. Thank you. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:12, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
