One article or two?[edit]

I merged the two articles for Parksville and Qualicum Beach into one because I think makes more sense to present them that way to the traveller. One, they're side by side; and two, it's not uncommon for the two cities to be referred to together as "Parksville Qualicum Beach", or sometimes "Oceanside". Their tourism site is combined, and it's also part of a larger area (i.e., Coombs, Englishman Falls, the parks along Hwy 4) which I think is easier to cover if it's all part of the same article. -Shaundd (talk) 05:15, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Shaundd: Sorry about that, I should have discussed it first. I modeled it after after other twinned towns in BC which are separated, such as Courtenay/Comox or Trail/Rossland. I've noticed that Oceanside is informally used, but the naming policy recommends that official names should be used instead (Anc). I do wonder about whether Arrowsmith Coombs Country needing its own article, as it's largely rural, but I thought there was enough content to split Parksville and Qualicum Beach. -- MuzikMachine (talk) 14:41, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi MuzikMachine, I created a separate article for Arrowsmith Coombs Country for a couple of reasons. One was to separate rural and urban in the area (and beach from non-beach), the second is my experience is people going to Tofino often bypass Parksville (which is north of the highway) but stop at Coombs and Cathedral Grove. Coombs also has a lot of name recognition -- the market there makes it a destination even if hardly anyone sleeps there. I think merging Coombs into another article will confuse things. -Shaundd (talk) 06:45, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Incorporated content from Wikipedia[edit]

Thanks for adding some content, but I really question this kind of encyclopedic content in a travel guide:

Tertiary sector and secondary sector jobs make up the largest part of the Parksville economy.

Who knows what the tertiary and secondary sectors are? But more importantly, who cares? Shall we prune the encyclopedic content a bit? Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:29, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think that a general description of a location's economy is necessary for a good understanding of what the location is about. But yeah, talking about secondary and tertiary sectors isn't going to be useful for a lot of readers. I'll rework it. Ground Zero (talk) 00:45, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great! And yes on a general description of the economy. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:47, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting the article[edit]

@MuzikMachine: Why is this article being split? I had chosen to put the two communities together for the reasons noted in Talk:Parksville-Qualicum_Beach#One article or two?. The area is marketed as one destination, it's not clear when you're there that you're leaving one and going into the other, and having spent time there each of the last three summers, I don't think having two separate articles improves things. -Shaundd (talk) 04:12, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MuzikMachine, Shaundd, Pabfigaro: Now we have three articles for two towns. Should we delete Parksville-Qualicum Beach, or merge Parksville and Qualicum Beach back into this article? Which makes more sense from the traveller's perspective? Ground Zero (talk) 11:54, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ground Zero: I vote to delete Parksville-Qualicum Beach. There are numerious examples of other twin towns where they are separate. --MuzikMachine (talk) 15:11, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ground Zero, MuzikMachine: I think it should be a hybrid of a redirect and disambiguation page. The area is marketed as Parksville Qualicum Beach (one entity) so it's a possible search term. A normal redirect is kind of pointless because it would only point to one of the two cities. So I think we should treat it more like a disambiguation page with links to both cities.
We shouldn't delete this article because it has the history of the edits before the article was split. Parksville and Qualicum Beach were copy and paste in a big chunk so they don't have any edit history. I think we'd be offside of the CC license if we deleted Parksville-Qualicum Beach. -Shaundd (talk) 17:18, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ground Zero, Shaundd: I'd be okay with the hybrid redirect/disambiguation page. --MuzikMachine (talk) 17:47, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think what you mean then is preserving Parksville-Qualicum Beach as, effectively, a disambiguation page for Parksville and Qualicum Beach, which (a) preserves its edit history, and (b) serves any reader who searches on "Parksville-Qualicum Beach". Do we all agree? Ground Zero (talk) 20:57, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thanks. That's a good summary of what I was proposing. -Shaundd (talk) 14:53, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Done – I went ahead and implemented this. -Shaundd (talk) 03:40, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Shaundd: thanks! Ground Zero (talk) 10:50, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
