Extraregion or Travel topic/itinerary?

This article's listing as an "extraregion" seems to me to be a miscategorization. There is no "Persian Empire" in today's world, so this should be a travel topic or itinerary that attempts to highlight noteworthy sites, museums, battlefields, etc related to the Persian Empire. Cities

The Persian_Empire#Cities section starts with:

See Iran#Cities for the main modern towns there. This section lists only places not on that list.

Despite that, people have recently added Shiraz & Tehran. Delete those? Or change the introductory text & add Isphahan , Tabriz, Mashad, perhaps others? Pashley (talk) 07:10, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

I think the "main modern towns" should be irrelevant to a historic article. If the "modern towns" are influential and contain important sites from the empire's glory days, I don't see how the article would be improved by not including them. The article should have as many relevant and interesting places related to the Persian Empire as possible. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 10:54, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Questionable claim

The article currently includes:

At the height of its power, more than 40 per cent of the world's population were Persian subjects, a higher ratio than any other empire ever.

Is that true? For all I know, it might be but there are reasons to doubt it. For one thing, China, India & SE Asia have always had large populations. For another, the Persian Empire was conquered several times & the conquerers' empire must have been larger than the Persian.

Can anyone cite a source to back it up? I know we don't use citations in articles, but I think we need one here. Pashley (talk) 04:30, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

The Book of Esther states several times that the Persian Empire of that time extended from India to Ethiopia. Do you know if it did ever extend that far? If it did, it could have encompassed a tremendous number of people relative to the global population of those days. 40% does seem hard to fathom, though, because there were surely populous areas in China, Java, other parts of Africa and so on, as you point out. I do not know. Certainly it included Gandhara & Egypt at some times (Alexander took both from the Persians), but until you mentioned it I had not heard of extensions beyond that. Pashley (talk) 09:57, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
