Talk:Philippine Revolution

What does this mean?[edit]

"The revolution established one of the first republics in Asia, though earlier attempts have since formed elsewhere, such as the Republic of Ezo (present-day Hokkaido) in early modern Japan."

Earlier attempts have since?? Contradiction of time. Republics since would include Indonesia, East Timor, Myanmar, Korea - and a whole bunch of other places. I guess Ezo was declared before 1898 but was short-lived? I'd particularly solicit comments from User:TagaSanPedroAko and User:Pashley, who might have some idea what the quoted sentence is supposed to mean. Thank you. I'm referring to the w:Biak-na-Bato Republic, the short-lived revolutionary government often cited as Asia's first republic, and the First Philippine Republic, which existed after the end of the revolution in 1898 until 1901, when Americans completed the occupation of the Philippines. The Republic of Ezo can be said to have came earlier, but only existed a few years since the Meiji Restoration before becoming a prefecture of Japan. All the other countries you provided only become independent after WW2, so it's safe to say the revolution created one of the first republics in Asia. Hi. You're focusing on the wrong things in your response. The issue here is purely one of a meaningless phrase, due to a contradiction in time. "Earlier attempts have since formed" makes no sense. Either Ezo predated the Philippine Revolution or it postdated it. And clearly, from your reply, it predated it. Do you see how the above text directly contradicted itself? I will make the needed edit, and you can edit further for content as you wish. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:54, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I rewrote the lead so to clarify this matter. Some sources cite the First Philippine Republic (w:Malolos Republic) as the first republic in Asia, but it is the short-lived republic founded by former supporters of the Tokugawa shogunate that is the first of all. I could have rewrote the sentence about the Philippines being one of the first republics in Asia but I didn't think it can be confusing and contradictory to history. "First true republic"[edit]

Totally unclear. Can you please make a clearer statement without going into excessive detail? Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:09, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
