Talk:Planning your flight

Too long and poorly structured[edit]

The article is very lengthy. The structure is difficult to follow, and much of the material could be better described in any article. Is there any special section which could be branched off? Possibly, flying-related health issues could collect info about deep-vein trombosis, jet lag, etc. /Yvwv (talk) 01:42, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganization[edit]

Saw your announcement in Traveler's Pub, looked at the results. Well done. My contributions tend to just rant with usable content, but forget about making it usable. Let's watch a few of the "new" articles to ensure their brevity and scores as outlines don't eventually cause them to be deleted, e.g., "Luggage". Many thanks, Hennejohn (talk) 17:17, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

When can a transit flight be a cheaper option?[edit]

There seems to be different impressions of the situations which make a transit flight cheaper than a direct one. Is there any expertise? /Yvwv (talk) 13:32, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, let me say this about that (bonus points if you can guess which US President was fond of saying this): In general airlines will charge a premium for direct or nonstop flights. Especially if they are the only one offering one on the particular route. So ceteris paribus you can reasonably expect a flight with one stops to be cheaper than a nonstop flight and one with two to be cheaper than one with one stop. BUT, airline prices are not necessarily logical and supposedly the algorithms used to calculate them deliberately include a "logic defying factor" so that customers trying to game the system have a harder time of it. That said, when I look for flights to Managua, they usually involve one or two stops and they are often cheaper than comparable direct or nonstop flights of similar overall distance. And then there is the example of a trip I once took with Air Berlin. I flew LAX-TXL-FRA not necessarily because FRA was the most practicable airport (that would have been NUE) but because flying that was cheaper than flying LAX-TXL alone because Air Berlin had a pretty weak presence at FRA at the time (It's become weaker since, Air Berlin now only offers a connection from FRA to TXL) and wanted to undercut Lufthansa's prices because Lufthansa offered (and still offers) a vast array of direct and nonstop flights from FRA. Because, after all, why would anybody chose Air Berlin with a layover over Lufthansa without a layover if the price was similar or identical? Hobbitschuster (talk) 13:40, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Last autumn, the cheapest option for many routes within Europe (cheaper than the direct flights) was to transit through Istanbul; in many cases adding 12 to 24 hours of travel time. Seemingly, Turkey had a drop in visitors (due to political turbulence) without a corresponding downsizing on Turkish Airlines. /Yvwv (talk) 14:11, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What's Rx?[edit]

So there is a mention of "Rx" in the section about medication. What the hell is that and shouldn't we explain that to our readers? Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:25, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The abbreviation "Rx" commonly appears on prescriptions, where it's usually the only text that isn't completely illegible. K7L (talk) 16:06, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Still too long?[edit]

The article is still very lengthy. Could we cut out any section, and refer to sub-articles? /Yvwv (talk) 16:53, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There's a recent addition in the paragraph about low cost airlines that can certainly do with some copy editing. Hobbitschuster (talk) 20:00, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Could this be featured?[edit]

I know we have previously featured "our coverage on Flying" but maybe we could feature this at some point in the future? Hobbitschuster (talk) 20:24, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New page banner[edit]

Current banner.
Suggested banner.

As the current page banner is just a palette swap of the page banner for flying, here is a new banner. Intentionally, the banner has a plane without an airline livery. /Yvwv (talk) 23:50, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have no objections to swapping the banner. Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:18, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
