World map?
[edit]Should we attempt to make a world map of this article? Around half of the articles can clearly not be attached to a place, and some of those that could, are associated with a whole country or a lenghty itinerary. The map would have much fewer markers than Previous Destinations of the month and Previously Off the beaten path. /Yvwv (talk) 21:07, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
- Made a draft of a world map. Topics which are less geographically defined are marked on a relevant location which does not collide with other travel topics. /Yvwv (talk) 02:49, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
October 2022's feature banner was deleted at Commons!
[edit]I noticed there's a gaping hole at October 2022's slot, and would have remembered if we two years ago would have had so few FTT candidates that we'd had to skip one month. Then I looked at the history and learned that some bot (?) named CommonsDelinker deleted the entry for Hamad International Airport. Not just the banner but the whole thing.
Firstly, I understand the usefulness with CommonsDelinker removing photos from different wiki articles where the source photo has been deleted on Commons. But this list of previous features is quite a bit different from pictures in articles. Of course, it wouldn't had been much better if we would have the entry left but with a redlink. Which brings me to my next point.
Namely, this is a great example of why pagebanners should ALWAYS be uploaded locally. People at Commons making the deletion decisions may not know what a "pagebanner" or "feature banner" really is. If you're not familiar with how WV functions, it's just another photo that's been stolen from another website, depicting a work of art from a country without FoP etc. and as such it has to be deleted.
Finally, we need to add Hamad International Airport back to the list with some banner or picture. In Wikivoyage:Destination_of_the_month_candidates/Banners/Archive/2022#Hamad_International_Airport the default page bannner has been used, but that would be boring. We could use the article's own banner which however is on Commons and that yellow teddy bear in the middle might be regarded as a work of art, and we're eventually gonna have this discussion once again (EDIT: I just did this as a temporary solution). Or we could just pick a nice picture from the article like before we used banners. Or then create a new feature banner and upload it locally. What do you think?
