Talk:Southeast Bengal
Splitting it into subregions
[edit]Southeast Bengal has too much cities and towns (>20) to be split into subregions. My current proposal of subregions is the following:
- Greater Kolkata (as region), covering the contiguous urban area along the Hooghly River.
Rural Hooghly (as rural area), covering the non-metropolitan parts of Hooghly district.Rural Howrah (as rural area), covering the non-metropolitan parts of Howrah district. Antila and Gadiara might be merged into this rural area.Rural Hooghly and rural Howrah (as rural area), covering the non-metropolitan parts of Hooghly and Howrah districts. Antila and Gadiara might be merged into this rural area.- 24 Parganas (as region), covering the non-metropolitan parts of North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas.
- Nadia (as region), covering the entire Nadia district.
I thought that a combination of rural Hooghly and rural Howrah might make more sense, but I can't find any name for the combined area (Hooghly-Howrah might sound distasteful outside India). --Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 05:30, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- I assume every local article (including the rural area articles) will have enough listings, and figuring that, I'm content to trust your judgment but appreciate your giving us notice in case someone had any disagreement with you or wanted to make any comments. I'd be curious to get an estimate of the number of listings in the rural area articles. If you want to combine those two rural areas, why not "Rural Hooghly and rural Howrah"? Seems reasonable. - "Rural Hooghly and rural Howrah" sounds better. The idea of rural Hooghly came out when I found that certain settlements in Hooghly district (Arambagh, Kamarpukur, Singur, Tarakeswar etc.) have several attractions, hotels, restaurants etc. but they are too far away from major cities (Hooghly, Chandannagar) to be listed there (the situation that warrant a rural area article). - How far are they from those cities? Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:49, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- More than 20 km (12 mi) from riverside cities. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 05:52, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Not necessarily too far, but I'm guessing the travel times are long. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:57, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yes and there are kilometres of green patches between the settlements. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 07:19, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

- I have already plunged forward to create Greater Kolkata and Rural Hooghly. Now I'm accelerating the split by applying my proposal. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 07:53, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
Reverting the split
[edit]The split of Southeast Bengal into subregions looks more and more inefficient to me as I understand that urban destinations should belong to "Cities" and rural destinations should belong to "Other destinations". So I'll revert the split. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 09:04, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
- Do as you see fit, but looking at Category:Southeast Bengal, there are enough articles breadcrumbed underneath each region (i.e. no region articles like Acton (region), though that's a bit of an extreme case), though it wouldn't overload this article. Merge Bansberia, Hooghly, Chandannagar and Serampore to Urban Hooghly
[edit]Since these cities are part of a conurbation along the west bank of the Hooghly River, travellers visiting one city might take a hotel or restaurant in another. Besides, some of the cities don't have much listings and have very few potential to grow. So it makes much sense to cover these cities under one city article and I propose "Urban Hooghly" for the name of the article. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 09:03, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- Withdrawing the proposal as it does no longer make any sense. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 09:15, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
The number of bluelinked destinations in Southeast Bengal is very high (25) and I want to reduce it at least below 20. Previously, I had split the region into subregions, which quickly turns out to be inefficient and has to be reverted. So I want to resort to other methods to reduce the number of destinations. According to the page history of Rarh, Hooghly district was at one point a part of Rarh before Rangan Datta redefined the regions of West Bengal. Also, Hooghly district is sometimes considered a part of Rarh in real life, at least culturally. Therefore, I propose to breadcrumb the destinations in Hooghly district into Rarh instead of Southeast Bengal. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 07:53, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- Since Rangan Datta reorganised the regions without discussion, I'll just plunge forward and do the same. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs) 14:20, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
