Article?

Urgh. This is not an article, this is a list. Info like this should be in the individual country/state/voivodship articles. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:04, 8 Jun 2005 (EDT)

I started the smoking article (WikiMedia logged me out so only my IP is visible). It is an article. Yes it does have a list of destiantions just as many other travel topics article. For example: Naturism, Gay_and_lesbian_travel, Scuba_diving, International_sporting_events, Volcanoes, Waterfalls, Architecture, UNESCO_World_Heritage_List, Yellow_fever. It is also available in individual country articles. But i got to Volcanoes if I want to see volcanoes, Yellow fever if I want to avoid yellow fever, and Smoking if I want to avoid smoking. If I want to go to a country where I can go to a bar without being subjected to smoking, I do not want to go through each country and region to see if smoking in bars is allowed. Just as I do not want to go through each city in the world to see which cities are in eg Italy --(WT-en) elgaard 09:27, 8 Jun 2005 (EDT)

I'm not sure how many users are actually going to seek out which countries have banned smoking in public areas. True, people may seek out a nonsmoking establishment once in the area, but I very much doubt someone is going to plan his/her trip solely around smoke free cities/states/countries. I disagree this article should be deleted. Living in a country that has effectively made smoking in enclosed public areas illegal, I think that those people who do smoke need some guidance about where their habit is welcomed and where it is not. While the information should probably be mentioned on the individual country articles, collecting an index of these together on a single page will give the traveler of the comparative idea of the acceptability (or otherwise) of their habit around the world. In New Zealand, for example, the traveler should be advised they cannot smoke inside any bar or restaurant, while almost all workplaces (including accommodation facilities) can choose to be smoke free and often restrict smoking to outdoor areas. While this might be mentioned in the New Zealand article, it will not be explicitly stated in any lower level aticles. Smokers should be given a heads-up.   • Keep. I do choose destinations based on smoking due to severe allergies and a desire to not expose my children to the stench. When I travel to Las Vegas on business, for example, the family stays home because of smoking. Factor in the increase in Asthma in the US among children, and you have to figure that a significant portion of the US chooses destinations based on smoking. This is the only page I've found on the internet that lists smoking bans by country. I believe the article potentially has more validity than as a travel advisory and could be even more comprehensive. I am from New Zealand and it is illegal to smoke in any public indoor space, workplace (indoors), bar, restaurant or shopping mall – type "Russell Crowe smoking ban" into a search engine and you will see how serious the smoking ban is in New Zealand. A comprehensive online list of countries that have smoking restrictions – Wikipedia may be more suitable than Wikivoyage in this sense – would establish whether this type of legislation is winning favour around the globe, and obviously the extent to which the laws restrict smoking. To see that list of countries grow would be an encouraging sign to those of us who do not smoke and wish to live our lives in smokefree and healthy environments. - eddie cameron

For Smokers

It's not cool, but I smoke. Feel free to tell me I'm going to die of cancer. Anyway, to help grow this beyond a mere list, it would be great if this page could include average cigarette prices and local customs a smoker might want to know. THAT would be insanely useful - since everyone isn't a nonsmoker.

• Kindly take the chip off your shoulder: the information about where you're not allowed to smoke is for the benefit of smokers. Generally speaking, information about local customs (including smoking) should be in the "Respect" section of whatever place you're talking about. Someone going to Ireland who happens to be a smoker should be told about smoking etiquette in in Ireland, rather than having to look for it here. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 08:10, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
